The young guy who played Chekov, Anton Yelchin, was killed in a freak accident when filming Star Trek Beyond. His car rolled down the hill of his driveway and crushed him against the gates pillar. That movie was dedicated to him and the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy. They said they would not recast Anton's role as Chekov in any future Star Trek films.

12:30 you know, it didn't register on me the first time, but the way he chuckles at "enlist" there is important because you don't get to be captain of a ship as an enlisted man, unless through exemplary service meriting a field recommendation by an officer. if you were to enlist in Starfleet, you'd be posted in and out of starships or stations, wherever you'd be required. if you were to join the academy to be an officer, you'd be *_joining_* Starfleet, for life potentially, living ON your assigned ship. Pike here is telling him "leave all of this and come with me", and Kirk of course is like "You're trippin', man."

I used to own all of the Star Trek television shows and movies from the original series to Voyager on DVDs. By watching the behind the scenes footage for the original series I understand that Gene Rodenberry went to the television executives and asked if he could add some color to the bridge. The television executives granted his request thinking that he would paint the walls or something. Instead Nichelle Nickels (sorry if I misspelled her name) joined the crew as the communications officer (or whatever was her official title) and history was made by having the first African descendant to be shown on an American television show as being a member of the bridge on a starship. Before the original Star Trek television show aired it is my understanding that all of the American sci fi television shows featured only white people living and traveling in outer space. 🪐

Good to see people still get into Star Trek. For a lot of original Trek fans the so called Kelvin timeline is way different from how things gone down before, but because it is an entirely different timeline, I think it is a good entry point for present day audiences. The following movies continue with the same crew. If you wrap up with these, that is fine, but it may get you interested in older Trek. The Next Generation movies, or the original crew's adventures. The further back in time you go in the release dates, the slower the action gets, and more nerdy the story is. But it sure was nice to have the OG Spock interact with the young crew here. Good reaction. +1 Like

Its extremely satisfying for a Trekkie like me that yall compare this movie to Star Wars. The new Star Trek films and some of the shows really have a typical sci fi action film vibe like Star Wars. But Star Trek used to be and sometimes still today is different. Its more serious and more about the messege and about mirroring and overcoming our societies and personalities flaws. Its more philosophical and ethical dilemma is way more important than space fights and speacial effects. This movie on the other hand. The filming used to be different too. Longer scenes, more dialogue, less music

He was the OG, ORIGINAL Spock from the original, late 1960's TV show that inspired the later, more recent TV shows and movies. If you want to watch more of these movies with THIS cast (Chris Pine as Captain Kirk) - there are three movies with Chris Pine - and in my opinion, these are the best and most fun of all the Star Trek movies. Others will disagree - and that's fine! I do think some of the shows and movies with Patrick Stewart - playing a new, captain - Captain Picard are good - but I really love Chris Pine's charm and humor as Captain Kirk. ❤

It's kind of a shame you guys aren't so familiar with the Star Treks that came before; knowing the Star Trek universe and character history adds a layer of enjoyment that makes the 'reboot' more enjoyable. That being said, I think it's kind of genius to reboot Star Trek as a change of timeline that makes an entirely new universe possible, utilizing characters and organizations we are already familiar with. It's dropping people we 'know' into new situations with new stresses to test how far those things will stretch them into different people.

@@DaKidsReact I was speaking more to the different TV series. I've been following since the very first series with Shatner and Nimoy in the 1960s and on into "Next Generation", "Voyager", and "Deep Space Nine". By then the franchise had jumped to film adaption. I lost interest in Scott Bakula's "Enterprise", but I have to say I wish I had cable to watch more recent extensions of the TV franchise. The original 1960s series set canon and iconic characters, as well as basic policy that keeps alive the liberal ideals of the 1960s; those ideals have become policy i how the Federation functions. Beyond that, the original series was sloppy and not well-developed, but who knew the franchise would have such a demanding fanbase that it would endure over 60 years? And as it endured, the writing, the science, the acting, and ALL the production values would improve. There was a time when Star Trek was a silly series on TV, a comic book for nerds, but it's moved to being fine theater with depth. Science fiction was always a kind of morality play, using aliens to give us enough disconnect to allow us to honestly evaluate our unintended and intended injustices. But back to my point: Not having the backstory of the original 1960s context does leave you missing some of the fun. There will be references that will sail right over your heads. But the Star Trek universe is now so rich that it does not diminish the enjoyment of the reboot films. Please next watch "Star Trek: Into Darkness" and then "Star Trek: Beyond".

They did a fine job of recreating the original Star Trek vibe. And this one is good. But, imo, the second one is even better. Partly cuz Kahn is a fantastic character. But also, cuz Benedict Cumberbach played tf outta him.
