I actually used this as a trick question for my brother, a big Trekkie. I asked him who the first woman we ever saw commanding a Federation starship was, and Saavik didn't count because she was just training. He answered who the first female captain in Star Fleet history was (someone I never heard of), but that wasn't the answer to my question. He forgot all about Madge Sinclair until I reminded him. She was the first female commander of a Starfleet ship that we ever saw, hence, the answer to my question.

The helmsman in heavy alien make-up was played by significant Native American actor Nick Ramus, with that stellar, imposing voice. Ramus played Lakota chief Red Cloud in the TV mini-series Son of the Morning Star among other films. Of course, Kurtwood Smith played a member of the same alien species as Federation President a few movies later in Undiscovered Country. (Efrosian, named after Star Trek IV production manager Mel Efros).

The novel gives the Saratoga the happiest of endings. While the male captains either panicked or tried to regain power and failed, Captain Sinclair here had the good sense to know reserve power won't sustain a ship long and ordered her non-essential crew into stasis. While the male captains had lots of casualties, she didn't lose anyone.

Madge Sinclair, she looked old when I first saw this as a kid, now she looks so young. The first black female captain portrayed in Star Trek as far as I know. The audience in the theatre went nuts when she appeared on screen. In a good way.

Fun facts; Madge Sinclair played captain in two different Star Trek franchises. LeVar Burton, Madge Sinclair, Ben Vereen, Paul Winfield were in Star Trek but they also starred together in ROOTS. I've always wondered whether the Saratoga was later rescued or did these people die. And I also wonder why they didn't keep a greater distance. Finally, I've always wondered if you'd be OK if you had a complete systems shutdown, live on emergency life support and then rebooted back up after you're back out of transmission range.

Doesn't really look like you could from the way the other ships describe what happened. I liken the probe's signal to like a massive power surge that fries every circuit it touches. Once the circuit is fried, you can't use it again simply by getting power back, you have to rebuild it. The Captain of the U.S.S. Yorktown (AKA tennis star Vijay Armitraj) explains that even three hours after the probe left, they still have no power and the U.S.S. Shepard Comm Officer (AKA Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Gos) says the same thing. The movie's novelization says that the crew of the Saratoga were rescued shortly after the probe left, though I'm not sure how because they were disabled for the longest of any ship. They were patrolling near the Klingon Neutral Zone, which means there are Federation outposts near there and presumably other ships could have come to their rescue.

The StarTrek universe is so big, that the mere idea that the captain of the USS Saratoga being some washed up failure of woman named Micheal is absurd. Just because she's black woman doesn't automatically make her the same person that's in STD. This Captain was created decades before the idea of Micheal was even conceived of. So the short answer, is that no, she's not Micheal.

My theory: The Saratoga seen in both TJH and DS9 "Emissary" are the same ship. The Saratoga somehow survives the whale probe. At some point before the Sisko years, the USS Saratoga changed its registry number from 1887 to 31911 during a refit. It will continue to have the new number until its destruction in 2366 at Wolf 359.

I don't know...loosing all power on your ship, including life support would be a pretty scary thing. Captains aren't fearless or perfect. They are flawed and have moments of weakness. It shouldn't be held against them.

I didn't see anyone panicking. This scene just shows the probe is serious and even a typical starship with a good captain can't handle it. That way when Captain Kirk deals with it, we understand he is an extraordinary hero.

In the novel, she is actually the most sensible of captains out of the ships who encountered the probe. While everyone else wasted their time trying to regain power, she ordered most of her crew into stasis pods, which kept everyone on her crew alive.

You mean that one crew in STD that's part of an alternate dimension? If you are implying that the captain of the USS Saratoga is Micheal, then you, you are implying she's a washed-up failure from STD because Micheal is a failure, and she's from STD.
