A Romulan admiral looks at a warp core and thinks "Hmmm, having an Anti-matter reactor in the center of my ship is terrifying, but I think we can do better. Lets have a black hole on our ship, that'll really make my engineers shit themselves in mind-breaking fear at the though of having to work on it"
@qichen855 жыл бұрын
It is entirely dependent on how big the singularity is. Today, we know that very small singularity evaporate almost instantly. In fact, with today's science, we can say a artificial singularity core is quite clever, they simply have to feed the singularity enough matter/energy to maintain it between "evaporation" and "growing" and in the event of failure, just stop feeding it energy and the singularity will evaporate on its own (restarting it is going to be a chore though). It essentially works by scattering raw matter into energy, which give you matter/energy conversion ability just like warp drives, but unlike your standard warp drives, only matter is required and no antimatter is present, the potential for explosion is actually a lot smaller. In fact, if the trek writers know today's science, they'd probably consider the artificial singularity core to be a lot safer than anti-matter core.
@witchdoctor13945 жыл бұрын
@@qichen85 Kugelblitz black holes, the kind you'd use for ships like this, have a theoretical matter to energy conversion rate of ~45%...a bit behind the theoretical 100% conversation rate of matter/anti-matter reactions. Still, that kind of energy conversion is nothing to scoff at!
@marcosrios12465 жыл бұрын
@@witchdoctor1394 Dont get offended. In actuality you can't get anywhere near 100% efficiency, per the laws of thermodynamics. The warp core mixes lots of m/a matter together at the same time. Realistically every particle isn't going to find its counterpart and annihilate before the initial blast of energy disperses the remianing particles.

The one thing I love about Romulan ships is that very thing that makes them such a risky proposition: their singularity cores. They can be made small and compact (even Romulan shuttle craft have them), they don't require antimatter to run (and can run on just about anything you can toss into the black hole in the middle of it), and no antimatter means no dilithium requirements (in short, no mining required, no refinement facilities needed, _and above all else, NO BURN; I'm looking at you, Discovery.)_

I always liked the romulan ship designs. They look less like the collection of random parts federation ships do, or the shipping container crates glued to an airplane that klingon designs tend toward.

Lukos0036 Random parts? Federation ships follow a pretty standard deign with a few ugly outliers that were mostly kit bashed.
@Lukos00367 жыл бұрын
With the exception of the intrepid and defiant, most federation ships are composed of a saucer, a secondary hull, and warp nacelles mounted on long spindly struts. It makes them look like a collection of random parts instead of a coherent design. STO tried to remedy some of this when they designed the Vesta, and the star cruisers. Those still have a general federation shape but the separation between primary and secondary hull are blurred entirely. It makes for a much more modern looking vessel that isn't attempting to modernize 60s pop art.
@Khuratokh7 жыл бұрын
at the time (in the 60's ) it was quite the revolutionary design, as most ships up to that point just resembled rockets.
@Lukos00367 жыл бұрын
I understand that, but it was a very date specific design. Today it looks awkward and disjointed. Which is why so many ship designs since Voyager have attempted to rectify it by making appear more integrated. Though I'm not personally a fan of the Prometheus multi vector mode. It seems....over complicated for what should otherwise be a straight forward ship.

I believe the Warbird of that era was also created to specifically counter the class of the Federation's new (at the time) Galaxy Class starships which despite faulty Warp Cores could put up a fight and take an equal beating in return (Enterprise vs the Borg, and the other occasion Riker ordered all weapons to full). I do know the Klingons had respect for the Galaxy Class and I believe the Romulans did as well
@nicholasmorsovillo2752 Жыл бұрын
The Romulan Cloaking Device maybe good but it has it's limits especially with power as seen in the episode 'Tin Man' where the commander of a Romulan D'Deridex Class Warbird was pushing his ships warp engines well past safety limits to keep up with the Federation Flagship the Galaxy Class Starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D as it was stated by Lt. Commander Data that a Romulan D'Deridex Class Warbird wasn't as fast as the Enterprise and when said ship passed the Enterprise to get to 'Tin Man' Data stated after extensive sensor scans that the Romulan Warship had suffered erapable damage to it's warp coils.

Growing up, and now, I loved the D'deridex class. It looked alien, but not Klingon. I really wish we'd seen an example of this a bit more personally and succeeding though. TNG had only one episode that really focused on it, showing more than a backdrop on a view screen. DS9, they were almost exclusively seen in establishing shots, in the background of a battle sequence, usually severely damaged and looking kind of helpless, and a two parter (Improbable Cause/Die is Cast) and it's losing. I loved that two parter mind you, and Face of the Enemy. Wish we'd seen more.

In a one-on-one engagement, the D'Deridex was supposedly the only allied ship capable of going toe-to-toe with the Dominion battleship. Forward firing arc to forward firing arc, the battleship would be lucky to 'match' the D'Deridex: the D'Deridex class design placing overwhelming emphasis on forward firepower (to exploit the surprise attack capability its cloak provided) whereas the battleship's weapons, while greater in total number, were more evenly distributed around its large hull - this leaving it at a disadvantage vs. the D'Deridex when the latter came head-on (especially considering that the battleship lacked the agility necessary to get 'clear' of the warbird's forward firing arc). The D'Deridex's weakness was that the same attributes which made it absolutely devastating in a surprise attack, and/or the single allied ship able to go head to head with a Dominion battleship, made it much less capable of dealing with swarms of highly agile Dominion fighters or clusters of orbital defense platforms. While it had massive forward fire power, its ability to attack targets above, below, behind, or to either flank was comparatively limited - a fact compounded by its own 'relative' lack of agility when dealing with such highly agile or numerous and scattered targets. The Romulan solution was to augment the D'Deridex with the Valdore. Although still placing emphasis on forward firepower, the Valdore class dispensed with much of the D'Deridex's enormous mass...this rendering it able to maneuver in the realm of the traditionally more nimble Klingon cruisers (the latter being built for a more 'dogfight-like' style of combat whereas Federation and Romulan ships had traditionally been built to slug it out in slower moving battles like ships of the line).

But contrast that with the Federation, Which has hundreds of starship classes in service at once, plus each homeworld having their own planetary ships.
