Same with when Riker encountered the J'naii, a fully male species who had members who felt female. Still beats the question.... Are trans people gay or heterosexual? I just watched this episode a few days ago (on Netflix) and let's be real, within the lore even if she were exiled, there's enough Trill out there that want a symbiant so desperately that they'd be willing to break the rules themselves and accept a symbiant that has been exiled. Hell, Jadzia's symbiant was forcibly stolen from her by one of the more radical Trill that wanted to be joined. We also know that more Trill are compatible than incompatible, so finding a host should be easy, even for an exiled symbiant. What I'm getting at is, if the only reason she didn't follow her heart is because it would mean the end of the Dax line of succession, then there really wasn't anything to worry about.
@Xathos5 жыл бұрын
Other Trill are suppose to disassociate with them (makes serving in Starfleet awkard). But, once again based on what Sisko reminded her, there is NO logical reason to pursue that route of increased risk to the symbiote. It is contrary to their cultural values, and training.

@@therdj15 If they found their own "Symbiosis Commission" then there's no "unscrupulous people" - hell, in the end Jadzia and others like her in charge and it would be better than this lying mess the the original commission is (lying about the rate of compatibility - as if the civilized Trill would raid the symbiote-pools (frankly: Post the military there, phasers set on wide beam stun, place force-fields and transport inhibitors till everything has calmed down...but after that I doubt there would be much chance of Trill actually trying to raid the Symbiote Pools!), suppressing hosts they don't like (Joran Dax!) etc. etc.)...so yeah, go ahead and dump on the commission (they let Curzon in who IMHO was a dick who knew he was a dick and still went to far a lot of the time -.-)

Fun facts: 1) The "penalty" for the crime is merely exile. Jadzia would have been able to remain officer aboard DS9, live her life, etc, just not return to Trill space. But - 2) We also learn during a DS9 episode that basically every Trill is indeed capable of hosting a symbiont. The Trill Government simply lied about that fact. But even among what they claim is a minority of joining-capable Trill, only a minority actually gets joined, so even according to the government you have many unjoined but joining-capable Trill. 3) As was shown with the emergency implantation of the Dax host into Erzi, or that one TNG episode, non-Trill doctors can perform the procedure. 4) Federation doctors are beholden to the Hippocratic Oath to protect all life, which would extend to the (clearly sentient) symbiote. So in conclusion: Even exiled from Trill space, it would actually be possible to pass on the Dax symbiont after Jadzia's death. The threat isn't as big as they make it out to be here.
@nicholasbenge25966 жыл бұрын
1. That means the Dax symbiont could not return to Trill under any circumstances. That means, when Jadzia dies the symbiont would die. 2. That episode stated only about half of the Trill are capable of joining. 3. I'm sure there are non-Trill doctors are versed in Trill physiology when there are Trill aboard the ship. Dr. Bashir needed to relearn Trill physiology when assigned to DS9.. 4. I'm sure that the Trill would refuse treatment for the symbiont, or if on Trill allow the symbiont to die.
@NovaHessia6 жыл бұрын
The point is since 1) there are way more official joining candidates than symbionts available, and even more joining-capable Trill than that and 2) non-Trill doctors can do the joining procedure as well - exile from Trill doesn't automatically mean death for the symbiont.
@Dispaminite6 жыл бұрын
It does mean that instead of getting the best candidate for joining as determed by the Commission, the Dax and Kahn symbiotes would have to go with whoever they could get. They'd lose the protection of Trill Society which is, as a previous episode addressed, designed to prevent them from becoming commodities. And they'd have to keep doing this until their deaths, since I doubt the exile is just for one hosts lifetime. It also means that there's a chance that the Federation would let the symbiotes die, as they let Bajor be enslaved, as this is "an internal Trill matter".
@lyianx6 жыл бұрын
2. Not 'every' Trill, but many more than they let on. This is because there are few symbiant's and as was said in later episodes when this was revealed, they were afraid they would effectively become "black market" items, highly sought after, and prone to theft. Which isn't the case when you add in a "you have to be compatible, and only we can tell you if you are" clause. 3. And Erzi was mentally unstable for awhile as a result. She wasn't trained or prepared for the onslaught of personalities and memories, and it took her a while to cope with it. When you are dealing with what equities to be an immortal life form, whos personalities and memories mesh together, with each added host, I would feel its rather important to screen who the next host will be as to not "contaminate" the symbiant with a bad personality. (see Joran Dax) As for this Taboo, it kinda goes along with that. As if two joined Trills kept reconnecting, there would be little variation in their lives and kinda make the symbiant run stale. So i kinda understand it. All said, im sorta in agreement with how the Trill have gone about taking care of, and distributing the symbiants.
@timf74136 жыл бұрын
That's all reasonable, but it also assumes there will be a compatible Trill available and willing to take the symbiote at the time of death. Keep in mind that the entire reason Ezri ended up as Dax's host to begin with is that she was the only Trill available in the same location as the symbiote within the needed time frame. While not insurmountable, those are some fairly big "ifs"

They were dealt bad cards. They had 6 seasons to build and explore the friendship between Jadzia and Benjamin Sisko; 6 seasons for Farrell and Brooks to learn how to play off each other. Ezri comes into the picture only in Season 7; with it both being the final season and the height of the Dominion War, they didn't have as much time to explore a new friendship; for De Boer and Brooks to learn to play off each other well.

@novat97317 жыл бұрын
That is true. The selection process is a hoax to deter criminals and people with other malicious intent from even attempting to join with a Trill. Basically, the universe is being led to believe that only the Trill have the necessary medical competence to join a Trill with a host, or even check if a Trill would be compatible. In reality however, the procedure is somewhat advanced though not out of scope for a skilled federation doctor and about half the Trill population can merge with a host as you say. I think you confusing equality with equity. anyone was able to apply to host a symbiote. it was kept secret about how many could host it. however, there was a testing process and it was decided fairly (i assume) who would be a host. the only thing they did was lie about the % of compatibility. like how IRL diamonds are artificially expensive.

@@philiphunn194 I think reassociation taboo is only against marriages. They can continue friendships and sexual flings, but they cannot marry again.

That's disgusting. One species exploiting another just to survive. Not really commensualism. Not exactly parasitism either. But not symbiotic either. Trill are closer to Borg then people like to think. Unlike Borg, Trillian symbionts don't force other sentient beings to be hosts. Like Borg, the host looses individuality. Like Borg that individuality servives as consciousness and memories, after host's death. To be individual is to be mortal. To subsume one's consciousness for benefit of a symbiont does push symbiosis towards parasitic end of spectrum. If I was Trill humanoid I would refuse symbiosis. Even in an emergency to save a life of a symbiont, I would decline.

watching this episode as a bigoted antigay right-winger when I first saw it, this scene gave me so much shit to try to figure out. a friend in sisco's position "shouldnt" back a defiantly aberrant act... but humanitys laws are deeper than those of any power group, and Discovery is continuing that tale, about the trill taboos specifically, no less!

If it was simply the reminence of Curson's love, how come Jadzia is in love herself?
@IndomitableT4 жыл бұрын
Raphael Rae. Actually, Nilani Khan and Torias Dax were married in a previous life and loved each other deeply. Love and all the feelings accompanying love can be so overwhelming, and if you remember or see and hear some of their conversations as their present selves, Lenara and Jadzia, they both experienced quite some difficulty with sorting out their own feelings from their previous hosts.🤷🏼♀️🤷🏻♀️🖖🏼

How are the Trill still members of the Federation with rules that lead to the death of a symbiote?
@k1productions876 жыл бұрын
Nobody is killing the Symbiont. As far as the Federation is concerned, it is just like any other member of the Federation dying of old age, or dying in an accident. The Federation has no jurisdiction in this regard

K1productions but it could be seen as abuse through neglect.
@k1productions876 жыл бұрын
No more than letting a person die of old age. Its just part of the natural life cycle. Technically a person's organs (if in good condition at the time of death) could be used for others' benefit. So, should the Federation refuse membership to worlds that refuse to harvest every dead body for parts?
@fluffycommander6 жыл бұрын
K1productions but in my mind it is a preventable death.
@k1productions876 жыл бұрын
In your mind, but not according to the rules of the Federation. it would open up a Pandora's Box, where if the Federation forces Trill to save all symbionts, then they subsequently force all other member worlds to harvest organs, deny abortions, force continued life upon those who are completely paralyzed and have no hope of LIVING ever again, and so forth. There is a measure of personal freedoms that must always be considered, and the Federation has never been one to deny such things.

Couldn't they like establish a dissident trill society of silly tabu breakers somewhere in exile. There shouldn't have been a lack of new host volunteers, since symbionts are supposed to be highly sought after in their society. Or do all trill religiously follow those arbitrarily set rules?

with Sisko, the dynamic is different than it was. the relationship grew/evolved instead of stagnating. it's an acceptable learning experience for the symbiote. but like someone else said, i think it's the reassociation with other symbiotes that's the real issue.

Nah. Sisko is as good a captain as any and doesn’t allow his friendship with someone centuries older than him to unduly influence him or weaken his role as commander of DS9. He called out Dax several times when it was required and vice versa. They model an excellent friendship. It has nothing to do with simping.

@traemaxwell4 жыл бұрын
So the symbiont joins with a Humanoid Trill(Host) and they link as 2 minds to make a Joined Trill. The symbiont and the host share knowledge and experience with each other. When the Humanoid Trill(Host) dies the Symbiont is then quickly ushered to another host who then take on both the knowledge and experience(Memories) of both the symbiont and the former host. So Dax is a symbiont that has had 9 hosts. That means the Dax symbiont has 9 lifetimes of knowledge and experience(Memories). Its like 9 people in one being.
@PyrokineticFire14 жыл бұрын
@@traemaxwell how much of the hosts' memories & experience are inside the symbiote? could Ezri remember a childhood story from jadzia's pre-joined life? seems rational that only thoughts & memories formed with the symbiote would be saved in it's memory. although, there might be memories of remembering, but they'd be tinted by nostalgia. ezri: i remember torias dax once thought about how great his childhood was (in actuality, he had a terrible childhood, he just remembered it fondly)
@traemaxwell4 жыл бұрын
@@PyrokineticFire1 Yep! A symbiote when it is joined to a humanoid trill will gain all of the memories of that host. So with Ezri, the Dax symbiote has been joined 9 times and in those 9 times it has accumulated 9 lifetimes worth of memory. If you watch Ezri from the first episode she was in you'll see the reason why it can be a little jarring I have 9 lifetimes of memories and you're not really sure whether they're yours or not. LOL
