@migliorstore47805 жыл бұрын
@@jstriker623 I could not be more disappointed from a critic on the actual reboot. New Kahn is designed as good as an sci-fi/action-adventure movie allows, and he has some touching backgrounds which do not permit you to ignore his behaviour and agenda. I think many technical-cinematographic flaws of the 70's and 80's movies have been fixed by next generation movies (including 90's series and films). Old Kahn appears, to my eyes and ears, just like an irrational being aiming to reach the (abused) control of the universe. New Kahn is looking for vengeance over an hypocritical Federation Of The Planets who enslaved his crew. I must also say that I admire the work who stand beside the psychological development of Mr. Spock (who can stand proudly his heritage) and, particularly of Uhura, who is characterized as a competitive member of the enterprise having troubles with some obvious problematic aspects coming from the engagement with a colleague and his troublesome relation with the captain. Other members of the crew left me quite satisfied. Kirk needs a discussion à part. I think they needed to sacrifice something from the original franchise's lore to clarify that those were a reboot. In the 60's show Jim is the man, meaning a mannish boy. He's like a Sean Connery shot in outer space. Everything's gonna be alright this morning... He break out on the quest like a kid who's playing without getting involved in moral issues (considering the franchise's standards)... but getting older (mainly in movies) he become more conscious. He reach the knowledge of his mortal clothes, of his crew's mortal clothes. He keeps being the good ol' boy who loves travelling through stars and finding stupor facing new facts and situations, but no one can doubt he has grown mature when he faces a self proclaimed god, or lose his son, or confronts with all he sacrificed to the Starfleet in the Nexus. New Kirk, at this point, missed the opportunity to face loss, death, deception. We are expecting the fourth movie... I hope he will be guided by more cool purposes, lucky stars, rational behaviours, without losing the marvellous instinct to go exploring, since, first of all, we are explorers (with the iron, vulcan-forged, morality typical of the Federation). I must also say that the old Bones is difficulty substituted, mainly for his actor playing skills, which kept credible lines not always satisfying. New Bones, on the other hand, is not an alcoholic, is not depressed, doesn't spend time to criticize Vulcan's logic, and, I guess, has less problems to find a partner (which I don't consider a step back).

I don't really think the implication is supposed to be that Kirk is "rusty and out of practice" despite him questioning whether he's become senile. He simply has a disregard for a general regulation due to his veteran status. This is something that actually happens with commanders of naval vessels. As they get more experienced they tend to disregard regulations that they see as useless or bureaucratic. In this situation it cost him because he couldn't fathom being fired upon by a Federation vessel of lower class or the reasons for such an attack. This ruse may not have worked on a less experienced captain due to their strict adherence to regulation.

Also lots of movies today are filled with meaningless WOKE garbage which has NOTHING to do with the plot. If Star Trek 2 was remade today here's an example of what we would be seeing: 1. The nephew of Scotty would be gay and 2 minutes with him kissing his gay partner with likely a scene of them sharing a bed. 2. Another 5 minutes wasted on explaining the Genesis project is needed because of climate change. 3. Saavik (the female vulcan) would actually be a drag queen and 2 minutes wasted where Spock learns from her about treating the different genders. 4. Uhura would have a 4 minute scene explaining how her great ancestors struggled with racism from white men. 5. There would be 4 minutes or more wasted showing how the Star Trek crew is eating bugs because that's what expected today.

+Solid Snake This isn't just the best Star Trek movie ever filmed, it's easily one of the best science fiction movies ever, it's up there with 2001 and Blade Runner. Something that's lost on modern movies is that action scenes should service the story, not the other way round. There's the obvious literary parallel with Moby Dick, Khan being the vengeful Ahab and the Enterprise being the white whale and this scene serves as an expression of Khans blinding lust for revenge rather than pReTy PlosiON BoOm bOoM lENSe flArE. Most people miss the other literary allusion and parallel with a Tale of two cities. The movie opens with the first lines of the novel and ends with it's closing lines, however, unlike in the novel it's the Charles Darney analog (Spock) that sacrifices himself for the redemption of the Sydney Carton analog (Kirk). It's an incredibly intelligent movie that's almost certainly too high brow for the modern 'general' audience. Modern movies are kinda like porno movies, in the sense that they're just money shot after money shot, loosely tied together with some laughably thin connective tissue. Good movies make you think, mediocre make you feel and crap movies are usually directed by JJ Abrams. Back in the early 90s we had this thing at school called Film Appreciation and you could bring a film in to show the class. After multiple requests I was finally allowed to bring in Star Trek II. I was mocked by most of the class. Back then, Star Trek was considered something for nerds (this was in Australia). They laughed and jeered as the movie commenced, making fun of Spock's ears and the techno babble. But all of that STOPPED when we got to this scene. From that point on they were GLUED to the screen. In fact, near the end of the film some of them grabbed their school bags and were half way out the door when, of course, the whole SPOCK thing happened. Not one single student left the auditorium. They sat there and watched the whole thing. Some in their seats. Some half way down the aisle trying to be gung-ho. When the credits started to roll, all their nerdist bullshit comments subsided and they came up to me with questions like: "So what happened to Spock? Did he die?". They just got a whole lot of smug looks from me. Not so tough with your nerd comments now eh. Was absolutely worth it and I felt a sense of accomplishment in bringing some sci-fi to some so called "hardened" school kids.

I thought Reliant was the best looking ship model they built for the franchise. It was bigger, yet smaller in outer volume. It looks like someone improved the engineering of an older, bulky design. TOS Enterprise was the most picturesque. I'd day the 2019 rendering was second best in aesthetic both inside sets and out. TMP was OK but the original look or the 2019 look was better to me. TNG looked like it was drawn in a comic book. Too graphic and far too colorful to look like a real thing. I could never suspend disbelief. Just MY aesthetic. Not anyone else's.

The best Star Trek movie ever made - nothing else compares to this one. Brilliantly directed with absolutely incredible acting especially on the part of the late Ricardo Montalbán. Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelly, and even William Shatner all deliver excellent performances also. Great script, awesome idea, and amazing special effects for the time. They simply don't make good movies like this anymore (pity). For the cast to come off of Star Trek I - the blah motion picture and make *this* is incredible. R.I.P. Mr. Montalbán - we are lessened at your departure. GOD speed to you sir.
@turricaned8 жыл бұрын
The somewhat ironic thing is that this was made on a fraction of the first movie's budget, mainly used a Paramount TV crew, had a very restrictive shooting schedule and was helmed by a relatively (at the time) unknown writer/director (Nick Meyer). This was also James Horner's first big-studio cinematic score. I think all the old hands knew it was "make or break" time and decided to give it everything they had.
@PaiSAMSEN8 жыл бұрын
Although I like TWoK, I still don't think it's as good as The Motion Picture. TWoK definitely writen to satisfy the critics crying for "More Action" from TMP, and they certainly did a good job on that, but it also come with massive logical and technical deficiency. Not just "I-never-forget-a-face-Mr.-Chekov", but also the existence of Genesis device, which lack credibility at all level. The crew are somewhat over-reacting to situation, and the fact that...why no engineering crew do anything to fix the engine at all until Spock come down there, then they just screaming outside the engine room while Spock do all their jobs. It is emotional scene, but stupid. They lack the careful writing of TMP, and that's what deficient about TWoK.
@OpenMawProductions8 жыл бұрын
There was no "careful writing" for TMP. They did not even have a solid ending for the script WHILE SHOOTING THE MOVIE. What about the Genesis device lacks credibility? As for why the trainee crew wasn't saving the ship in the end? Most of them were suffering from acute radiation poisoning and were all but completely incapacitated. Scotty and McCoy were the only two to notice Spock was even doing anything. The rest of the engineering crew were sitting and laying around because they were all incredibly weak.
@forceinfinity8 жыл бұрын
I heard TUC was also shot on a shoestring budget. Nicholas Meyer is a master at maximizing what budget he's given
@orubicon508 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason TMP was of higher budget was that a failed TV project, Star Trek Phase II, was put there. Part of the lower budget for this one and the second was that they recycled ship scenes. Leaving dock especially. II was a far better bang for the eventual buck, but TMP was visually impressive for the time, as intended.

Still the best all-around Star Trek movie ever made. This movie's sub-themes about regret, aging, sacrifice, death, and the overall human condition give it a depth that few sci-fi movies before or since have achieved. Even Kirk's little moment here with the reading glasses is priceless -- he doesn't want to put them on in front of the crew, because he still wants to be "young, invincible Kirk," and maintain that image with his crew, so he glances around first and hesitates... but: "damn," he needs them to see. Because even the legendary Captain Kirk is not immune to aging and falling apart, just like the rest of us. As Kahn reminded him only a moment before: "Time is a luxury you *don't* have, Admiral." James Horner''s score also makes this movie incredibly re-watchable... love that score. Funny thing is, I've probably watched the scene in this clip 50-60 times over the years, but I still couldn't help but click on the link to watch it again. Unlike us humans, this movie never gets old. :)
@fredocarroll4 жыл бұрын
I don't know if the filmmakers knew about it, but the glasses thing from an authority figure is a real moment in history. After the American War of Independence, a deeply indebted Continental Congress was thinking of reneging on its payment obligations to officers in the Continental Army. A conspiracy between officers began to directly challenge the political authorities. George Washington found out about it and went to address his officers. He spoke a bit, urging them to show restraint, but wasn't getting anywhere with them; they were exceedingly angry. He had a letter from Congress to read to them. However, he needed glasses, too, though he'd hid that from most of his officers. As he got them out, he said, "Gentlemen, you will permit me to put on my spectacles, for I have grown not only gray but almost blind in the service of my country." Apparently, that had a far larger impact; a number of the officers present burst into tears at hearing that from their vaunted commander in chief. Washington read the statement, left the officers to think it over, and they voted to repudiate the calls of the conspirators. The Newburgh Conspiracy was a pretty important moment in the early history of the American republic. A similar theme, though.

Welcome and thanks for sharing your take. I agree wholeheartedly, ILM in the age of models was certainly the golden age. Stan Winston was also a legend, Aliens' budget was only $9 - 11 million, but it all looked so amazing and big in scope! With all the huge budgets films get these days I wonder where all the money goes and why it's not use towards practical effects. I wish more would go by Christopher Nolan's playbook as he seems to be the only director left who believes in doing everything in camera, only using CGI when absolutely necessary. Though that trait can work against him like in his film Dunkirk, CGI should've been used to make more soldiers to fill up the beach scenes (not sure if you know what I'm talking about)

@STho2055 жыл бұрын
One of the points of this Meyers rewritten script was to add over ten years to TOS. TMP was supposed to be 2272. Just one year in drydock since the return of Kirk's crew from the 5 yr mission. Myers and Bennett didn't think Shatner could pull off 39 and it was obvious in TMP that Nimoy and the others could not pull off their ages in the early 1970s. So the Face It You're Older script was written starting with the birthday. Kirk became 50 and started making rookie mistakes.

Where its okay to go long periods of time without an explosion or action sequence. Where its okay for a fight to be replaced with a verbal standoff. Where its okay to spend 10 minutes having people talk around a table. Where the enemies don't die insantly like they are insignificant adds. Where the spacefights don't involve 1 hit ko's and then plot armour for any main characters ships ( a problem for series like deep space nine somtimes, and more readily seem in other sci fi like Andromeda or SG1 or whatever other mainstream scifi).
