Six people put their lives and careers on the line for a friend. One lost his son and his ship. One of the best portrayals of friendship, love, loyalty and sacrifice I've seen on screen. Even Enterprise, broken as she was, fought to her last to save Spock.

William Shatner was so good in this movie. His reaction when David dies is heart breaking, and changes Kirk forever. The desruction of the one thing he loves, the Enterprise, changing death into a chance to fight back. Kirk's finest hour.

The scene where Stiles tells him, "Kirk, you do this, and you'll never sit in the captain's chair again" is another perfect performance; Shatner has that instant of hesitation, Kirk asking himself one last time if this is the right thing to do, and then he's resolute and goes forward.

The reason they "killed" Spock in "Khan" was Leonard Nimoy really didn't want to play the part anymore and said he'd only do "Khan" if Spock died. But, during the filming, he realized he was wrong and that the character needed to live on and was vital to the franchise. But, they'd already committed his character to die. So, they basically had to come up with a way to bring him back, and that's how you get this movie.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 6 ай бұрын
Right. But watching the movies in order today makes it seem like there was a plan all along to bring Spock back. But there really wasn't! Star Trek 3 was not planned when 2 was made. Nimoy had a change of heart after 2, and getting into directing. But they were able to use some elements of 2 along with some really good writing to make it seem like bringing Spock back was always the plan.
@lyianx
@lyianx 6 ай бұрын
Sort of "during the filming" It was actually during the first screening when he saw how everyone reacted to his death. So they went back and added the "remember" mind meld as a "back door" to bring him back if the movie worked out and he wanted to do another.
@robertkramer2271
@robertkramer2271 6 ай бұрын
@lyianx I had saw a documentary a while back about "Khan" and that's where Nimoy had said at first he'd come back if they killed off Spock, but eventually he realized the character needed to survived. It's where he also mentioned that Spock "dying" had leaked out among the fanbase and they came up with the Kobayashi test and Kirk saying "aren't you dead?"

What I remember about this movie: when Spock died at the end of Star Trek II the theater was in stunned silence. But when the Enterprise blew up, people cried out. Then when the crew stood on that hill watching the Enterprise burn down through the atmosphere, you could hear people audibly sobbing all over the theater. Star Trek is not the voyages of Kirk and Spock, it’s the voyages of the starship Enterprise. And they killed the Enterprise. It really broke people.

Kirk, early in TOS, episode: The Naked Time, "She...the ship is called "SHE!" Never lose you." As a young child growing up on Trek tos reruns in the 80s, then seeing this end to her refit so quickly after ST II TWOK...really broke me. I pitched a fit like an autistic child would about her burger being broken in two pieces at Red Robin. I later learned to appreciate it though...all good things must come to an end. Poor David, he really died saving Savvik, she was going to be knifed by the Klingon, no doubt...Klingons hate Romulans and Vulcans really, she was the obvious victim. He had to try to live up to his father's name after that guilt trip she put him on...and the plot needed Kirk to have a reason to fall trying to sit in his chair. Poor animal, though....Kruge's pet Targ didn't deserve to die! 😭😭😭

I've grown to appreciate this movie a lot more in the youtube reaction era, it's got a lot of heart and care to how its crafted. Yes Saavik is supposed to be the same vulcan played by Kirstie Allie but was recast with Robin Curtis because Kirstie was a big star on the TV show Cheers by this point. Also you noticing that Mark Lenard (who plays Sarek, Spock's father) looking the same age as Spock; Mark Lenard is actually 7 years older than Leonard Nimoy but that's obviously not a very big age difference for playing father/son. But Mark Lenard is so dang good. And you caught Christopher Lloyd through the makeup, and the same actress playing T'Lar! Well done! You'll love #4

They did have some Klingon Language in the first movie, but it was mostly words just made up by Scotty's actor James Doohan and one of the movie's producers, with no intent on making it a fully fleshed out constructed language, unlike what the did in 3. As a side note, the actor who played Spock's dad Sarek, Mark Leonard, played a Klingon in The Motion Picture. When you take into account the TOS episode where he also played a Romulan, that meant he had the hat trick for playing the big recurring alien species from early Trek.

I always found Star Trek III to be an underrated film. When I first saw it (in the 90s, during a my Trek discovery) I thought it was almost as good as the best in the series. Christopher Lloyd is great, I was fascinated by the destruction of the Enterprise, and the plot was really interesting. As for the movie bringing Spock back from the dead, Shatner said "The movie is called 'The Search For Spock'. If we'd have just shrugged and said 'we didn't find him' the audience would have thrown rocks at the screen". XD

It was always my favorite of the original movies. I never understood the "meh" reputation it seems to have. My only complaint is echoed by Cassie, which is that I think they could have handled David's death better -- like made it more of a significant and emotional scene, instead of a couple of quick shots.
@MiketheratguyMultimedia
@MiketheratguyMultimedia 6 ай бұрын
@@Johnny_Socko I think it's because it was sandwiched between II and IV which are usually considered to be the best of the TOS films (VI as well, but that one seems to go back and forth with IV as the second-best). III seemed to be largely dismissed as the weak link of the three despite the fact that it is, in and of itself, a great Trek film.

This movie was the first VHS tape that I ever owned. It was a present from my mom for my 11th (or 12th?) birthday in the mid 90s. Though she was generally not impressed with me watching any sorts of TV and strictly limited my TV sessions to around 5 hours per week (at that age), I was mind blown and unbelievably happy when she got me a VHS tape. Not just any VHS tape, but one of Star Trek. She even watched it with me because she wasn't sure if the movie was age appropriate. I still have a picture of that birthday, where my mom sits next to me while I unwrap the VHS tape. I am now in my 40s and have kids of my own. My mother is in her late 60s and has Alzheimer's. She is unable to walk, talk or move, and hasn't recognize anyone in almost 2 years. That picture of that moment is one of the most beautiful pictures I have of her and me together. We framed it and put it next to her bed. That is why to me, Star Trek The Search For Spock will always be associated with extremely beautiful memories.

McCoy's willingness to risk his life to save Spock really shows how the characters of Star Trek are connected on a personal level. First Spock gives up his life for his crew and then Kirk risks his career to save his friend and then McCoy selflessly is willing to lay down his life for his friend despite their constant bickering and conflicts. McCoy does care about Spock and he doesn't back down when it comes to saving him.

I hope you continue into the final frontier because THE VOYAGE HOME starts right where this leaves off and tells a fish out of water story (some irony there) that's filled with a lot of humor. During the scene where Enterprise is coming into Spacedock, there’s a shot where a bunch of people are looking at the ship and gaping at the battle damage. One of them is a woman in Starfleet uniform with curly red hair - this is actress Grace Lee Whitney, reprising her role as Janice Rand. As the world ages, Spock ages...if they cannot get him off the planet in time...he will die for good. Saavik is a half vulcan half romulan. Both races have a shared history; romulans chose to remain on the warring nature that vulcans began on and separated for centuries. Saavik was a child of war, her romulan father was a soldier who took Saavik's mother as a spoil of war which produced Saavik. During a mission, Spock discovered her and raised her as his own child and helped her to enter Starfleet academy. She would become the first half vulcan half romulan captain of a federation starship...the USS Titan.

This led to USS Reliant going to Ceti Alpha V (thinking it was C.E. VI) and the events of the last movie. If David had not used protomatter, no research at Space Station Regula I, no dead scientists, no dead Enterprise crewmen, no death of Captain Terrell or Khan or his followers. All those deaths, logically, are on David's hands.

The ship is called She! Never lose you." Kirk and Scotty both loved their baby, but in retrospect, better to have her go in this way than fall into enemy hands...too bad those photon torpedoes were so weak though, all they did was kill Kruge's pet Targ, animal!

@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 I remember in the original series when they used to dial in multi-megaton yields on photon torpedoes. That sure changed throughout the course of the franchise!

Tears man, tears. The shot of them on Genesis watching the Enterprise fall across the sky. What a shot! The Enterprise was a CHARACTER. Its like a loved one died. I get choked up every time.

Except they are not in any way a trilogy. Neither is Rocky It has 6 movies in it's franchise. 9 IF you include Creed, but personally I let Creed stand as its own trilogy. Also despite your personal feelings on the matter, Star Wars is also no longer a trilogy.

Cassie, since you are so fond of Scottie(James Doohan), you might be interested to know he also served as an Artillery Forward Observation Officer (FOO) and pilot. He saw combat in Europe during World War II, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

I still remember the audible gasp In the theater when the Enterprise blew! Everyone was shocked and stunned. Christopher Lloyd as Kruge is FANTASTIC in this. John Larroquette from "Night Court" plays "Maltz" This is part 2 in a trilogy. The next one is the conclusion. This movie finally presents the modern klingon look. The forehead ridges, the uniforms, the long coats. These is thr klingon look that's seen in all future movies and series (cept for thr "kelvington" movies, and star trek Discovery)

This and "The Wrath of Khan" were among the very first Movies that I'd ever seen when I was a Kid, and while the former is considered (by most) to be The Best one of them all...I've always had a soft spot for "The Search for Spock."💝I genuinely Love-&-Respect this one because it gives Me everything that I want: another Fun-&-Epic Adventure with My Favorite Crew, it's both Sci-Fi as well as Spiritual too, and all of this was even Directed by Spock himself🖖(R.I.P. Leonard Nimoy)!

Time wise, it's Kruge that plays Doc Brown. Christopher Lloyd is a man of many faces! You will really enjoy 4.

A helpful tip for learning the Vulcan salute. If you really want to train your hands to be able to do it, take hair ties and tie them around each of the two pairs of fingers. That will keep your fingers together as you get used to holding the "V" shape and makes it easier to keep your fingers upright. I did this when I was younger and to this day, I am still able to hold the salute on both hands.

it also involves sticking the thumb out, which makes it a little easier to separate the middle fingers.

Let's not forget... It was also similar to the Mork from Ork alien handshake greeting from the 70s sit-com Mork & Mindy with Robin Williams.. We all know they copied Spock's Vulcan salute and modified it. Nanoo nanoo.🖖

When I was 5 (37, soon), I could do it on my left hand easily, but it took me 6-7 years until I could do it on my right, and I trained my right eyebrow during my middle school days to go up without my left following.

Phil Morris, the guy who plays the cadet Kirk talks to at the beginning, was in an episode of the original series as a child, and in the Voyager episode "One Small Step." He also played a Klingon and a Jem'Hadar in two different episodes of DS9. Maltz is played by John Larroquette, who is famous from Night Court. Robin Curtis, who plays Saavik in this movie, played a Vulcan in the TNG episode "Gambit." She was the second actress to portray Saavik, after Kirstie Alley in ST2. Both actresses made their acting debuts as this character.
