Nothing will top the emotional impact of Spock’s death in ST2, but the loss of the Enterprise, one of the biggest characters in her own right, was a close second and left a lot of people feeling the loss.

The first time I cried in the theater as an adult was when Spock died, the second was when the Enterprise died. People can critique The Voyage Home all they want, but for us fans experiencing grief from two movies in a row, we really needed the comic relief from the day of old Trek. It was a refreshing change of pace.

William Shatner was so good in this movie. His reaction when David dies is heart breaking, and changes Kirk forever. The desruction of the one thing he loves, the Enterprise, changing death into a chance to fight back. Kirk's finest hour.

The scene where Stiles tells him, "Kirk, you do this, and you'll never sit in the captain's chair again" is another perfect performance; Shatner has that instant of hesitation, Kirk asking himself one last time if this is the right thing to do, and then he's resolute and goes forward.

What I remember about this movie: when Spock died at the end of Star Trek II the theater was in stunned silence. But when the Enterprise blew up, people cried out. Then when the crew stood on that hill watching the Enterprise burn down through the atmosphere, you could hear people audibly sobbing all over the theater. Star Trek is not the voyages of Kirk and Spock, it’s the voyages of the starship Enterprise. And they killed the Enterprise. It really broke people.

Kirk, early in TOS, episode: The Naked Time, "She...the ship is called "SHE!" Never lose you." As a young child growing up on Trek tos reruns in the 80s, then seeing this end to her refit so quickly after ST II TWOK...really broke me. I pitched a fit like an autistic child would about her burger being broken in two pieces at Red Robin. I later learned to appreciate it though...all good things must come to an end. Poor David, he really died saving Savvik, she was going to be knifed by the Klingon, no doubt...Klingons hate Romulans and Vulcans really, she was the obvious victim. He had to try to live up to his father's name after that guilt trip she put him on...and the plot needed Kirk to have a reason to fall trying to sit in his chair. Poor animal, though....Kruge's pet Targ didn't deserve to die! 😭😭😭

McCoy's willingness to risk his life to save Spock really shows how the characters of Star Trek are connected on a personal level. First Spock gives up his life for his crew and then Kirk risks his career to save his friend and then McCoy selflessly is willing to lay down his life for his friend despite their constant bickering and conflicts. McCoy does care about Spock and he doesn't back down when it comes to saving him.

Your Dad is awesome. I bet he was crying during the destruction of the Enterprise too - a lot of tears in the theater. It is always hard to watch this movie for the self destruct sequence. Besides, "Don't call me tiny," the best line in the whole movie is: "That green blooded son of a bitch. It's his revenge for all those arguments he lost!" Runner ups, "How can you be deaf with ears like those!" and "I accept the danger. Hell of a time to ask." I suggest you take a look at the episode from the original series, season three: "The Tholian Web." Spock puts everything on the line based upon his theories to save Kirk.

The reason they "killed" Spock in "Khan" was Leonard Nimoy really didn't want to play the part anymore and said he'd only do "Khan" if Spock died. But, during the filming, he realized he was wrong and that the character needed to live on and was vital to the franchise. But, they'd already committed his character to die. So, they basically had to come up with a way to bring him back, and that's how you get this movie.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 11 ай бұрын
Right. But watching the movies in order today makes it seem like there was a plan all along to bring Spock back. But there really wasn't! Star Trek 3 was not planned when 2 was made. Nimoy had a change of heart after 2, and getting into directing. But they were able to use some elements of 2 along with some really good writing to make it seem like bringing Spock back was always the plan.
@lyianx
@lyianx 11 ай бұрын
Sort of "during the filming" It was actually during the first screening when he saw how everyone reacted to his death. So they went back and added the "remember" mind meld as a "back door" to bring him back if the movie worked out and he wanted to do another.
@robertkramer2271
@robertkramer2271 11 ай бұрын
@lyianx I had saw a documentary a while back about "Khan" and that's where Nimoy had said at first he'd come back if they killed off Spock, but eventually he realized the character needed to survived. It's where he also mentioned that Spock "dying" had leaked out among the fanbase and they came up with the Kobayashi test and Kirk saying "aren't you dead?"

And Spock stuck around in Tholian space to retrieve Kirk from the USS Defiant, which was trapped in a trans dimensional rift, putting the entire Crew at risk of insanity from the deteriorating space they were in. I always found Star Trek III to be an underrated film. When I first saw it (in the 90s, during a my Trek discovery) I thought it was almost as good as the best in the series. Christopher Lloyd is great, I was fascinated by the destruction of the Enterprise, and the plot was really interesting. As for the movie bringing Spock back from the dead, Shatner said "The movie is called 'The Search For Spock'. If we'd have just shrugged and said 'we didn't find him' the audience would have thrown rocks at the screen". XD

It was always my favorite of the original movies. I never understood the "meh" reputation it seems to have. Yes Saavik is supposed to be the same vulcan played by Kirstie Allie but was recast with Robin Curtis because Kirstie was a big star on the TV show Cheers by this point. Also you noticing that Mark Lenard (who plays Sarek, Spock's father) looking the same age as Spock; Mark Lenard is actually 7 years older than Leonard Nimoy but that's obviously not a very big age difference for playing father/son. They did have some Klingon Language in the first movie, but it was mostly words just made up by Scotty's actor James Doohan and one of the movie's producers, with no intent on making it a fully fleshed out constructed language, unlike what the did in 3. As a side note, the actor who played Spock's dad Sarek, Mark Leonard, played a Klingon in The Motion Picture. When you take into account the TOS episode where he also played a Romulan, that meant he had the hat trick for playing the big recurring alien species from early Trek.

Leonard Nimoy (who directed Star Trek III: The Search for Spock), wanted Kirstie Alley to reprise the role of Saavik, but, according to Nimoy's autobiography I Am Spock, Alley's agent requested a large salary increase that the production simply couldn't afford.

Kirstie Alley on the other hand, claimed that she was offered less than Star Trek II to do more, and by then she also had far more clout. She deserved to be paid more, but Trek's movie pedigree was still not quite solidified so the budget wasn't there.

I didn't have you pegged for a STAR TREK person but you did say part of you starting the channel was to get away from the "chick flicks" ... I hope you continue into the final frontier because THE VOYAGE HOME starts right where this leaves off and tells a fish out of water story (some irony there) that's filled with a lot of humor. This movie was the first VHS tape that I ever owned. It was a present from my mom for my 11th (or 12th?) birthday in the mid 90s. Though she was generally not impressed with me watching any sorts of TV and strictly limited my TV sessions to around 5 hours per week (at that age), I was mind blown and unbelievably happy when she got me a VHS tape. Not just any VHS tape, but one of Star Trek. She even watched it with me because she wasn't sure if the movie was age appropriate. I still have a picture of that birthday, where my mom sits next to me while I unwrap the VHS tape. I am now in my 40s and have kids of my own. My mother is in her late 60s and has Alzheimer's. She is unable to walk, talk or move, and hasn't recognize anyone in almost 2 years. That picture of that moment is one of the most beautiful pictures I have of her and me together. We framed it and put it next to her bed. That is why to me, Star Trek The Search For Spock will always be associated with extremely beautiful memories.

During the scene where Enterprise is coming into Spacedock, there’s a shot where a bunch of people are looking at the ship and gaping at the battle damage. One of them is a woman in Starfleet uniform with curly red hair - this is actress Grace Lee Whitney, reprising her role as Janice Rand. You’d remember her from the original series episode “The Naked Time” as a blonde yeoman in red with a high-piled hairdo and a short skirt who brought a report or something to Captain Kirk - she appeared in 8 episodes of the first season.

This led to USS Reliant going to Ceti Alpha V (thinking it was C.E. VI) and the events of the last movie. If David had not used protomatter, no research at Space Station Regula I, no dead scientists, no dead Enterprise crewmen, no death of Captain Terrell or Khan or his followers. A helpful tip for learning the Vulcan salute. If you really want to train your hands to be able to do it, take hair ties and tie them around each of the two pairs of fingers. I did this when I was younger and to this day, I am still able to hold the salute on both hands.

I seriously had a temper tantrum where I was not willing to accept the destruction, I flipped out and my parents had to turn the tape off to calm me down...omg, I'm embarrassed about it now. "She! The ship is called She! Never lose you." Kirk and Scotty both loved their baby, but in retrospect, better to have her go in this way than fall into enemy hands...too bad those photon torpedoes were so weak though, all they did was kill Kruge's pet Targ, animal!

It took two movies to see Spock's final solution to the Kobayashi Maru test. What do you think of his ultimate solution?😁. Gotta add, you now need to see the third part of this story in the fourth movie. It's fun, lighthearted, and a nice conclusion to the trilogy.

There is a clip of the whole "stealing the Enterprise" sequence on YT somewhere and the thing I remember most about it were two comments, one comment underneath that said "When you can turn 5 minutes of reversing a ship into a thing of beauty and tension, its a fantastic scene!" and the other "The most epic backing out the garage scene ever filmed!!!!!" The music and visuals are exvellent and the cast realy sell the increasing tension as the Enterprise gets closer to the closed bay doors.

In fact - Christopher Lloyd played Commander Kruge BEFORE he played Doc Brown! Which - for most of us in the early to mid 80s, meant we went straight from knowing him as "Reverend Jim" on the comedy sitcom "Taxi" to seeing him as the Klingon Kruge! You would not BELIEVE the bizarre intersection of referential jokes we came up with based on THAT mental whiplash back in the day! 🤣🤣🤣

Klingons ARE extra strong. They have redundant everything - double heart valves, double lung compartments, double most organs and metabolism. In addition to being larger in general, almost all Klingons train as warriors their entire life and hold an ultimate goal of dying in glorious combat. The fact that a 60+ year old Kirk was able to defend himself against even one fairly skinny one is legendary.

I know TOS is its own thing, but all but Checkov beat them up with ease, and in SPOILER AHEAD: DS9, Kira and Dax are beating up full grown men! To me, it's the Vulcans who are consistently shown as the strong ones (but they don't use it often)

2 bonus facts: 1) There was a cut scene where Uhura made it to the Vulcan embassy just ahead of Federation security; Sarek granted her diplomatic immunity, which explains how she met the rest of the gang on Vulcan. 2) Some of the TV commercials back in the day showed the destruction of the Enterprise, which annoyed a bunch of people (including this 10-year old).
