Star Trek Infinite is a Total Conversion of Stellaris

Looks like someone at Paramount saw the Total Conversion mod for Stellaris and thought; hey, that's not a bad idea! And lo and behold Star Trek Infinite was born. A Star Trek Based Stellaris Spinoff.

I think they're really conscious of the Stellaris IP and seeing what they can milk out of it. Not a bad thing, just there's not much I could really point to as the 'core identity' of Stellaris as a brand, since it riffs off everything sci-fi. I'm willing to try almost anything Paradox produces, so I wait optimistically, though something like the Star Trek mod's level of detail appeals to me more, tbh.

At the moment, the New Horizon and New Civilisations mods look far more filled with features and assets. Amazed they just didn't strike some sort of deal to use that material to make into a game, and employ some of the modders to make a full game. Infinte will need to offer a great deal at a low price if it's going to take me away from the mods, especially if there will be expansion and other content packs to be sold later.

Holy crap, I had completely forgotten about SNW, er New Civilizations; mostly played New Horizon... By the by, have you played both somewhat? If so, what would you say the main differences are?

@@Sephiroth144 I've only played NH to the end game before, so I'm not the best to judge overall. If you can play one though, you can play the other with some minor adjustments. I'd say Civilizations plays a bit slower, but empires can be more tightly packed together, so expanding out to systems early is vital, or building the might to take systems. NH has more timeline friendly story choices, but Civilizations offers unique mechanics such as sending your science ships into vast expanses/nebulas to explore, which can reap big rewards/artifacts if it's advanced enough. You can also play races like the Chodak in it. Wouldn't be fair to say one is "better" than the other, more what suits to your gameplay tastes more. If you're just all about more great Star Trek content made by fans, then both will highly satisfy and well worth playing.

The problem these days, and with Stellaris in general ,is they both get hit by the slow down bat incredibly fast. NH has more options to deal with it, but they never seem to make any difference. Hopefully a fresh game will involve some freedom from this.

As a massive Trek fan I'm really intrigued by this, but I do have some concerns. As of now (And that's important) it looks a lot like a Stellaris-Lite with a Trek skin, cleaner UI, and four factions. I might be wrong about that and I'm withholding judgement until we get way more details, but IF that is what Infinite turns out to be, then I think the pricing model PDX go for will be the make or break factor, for me at least; if it's the price of a full new release game, then that'll be a big turnoff, especially if it turns out to be a full £50 and then £10+ faction pack DLCs.

I kind of like the idea of a “loyalty bonus” discount. Example if you owned ultimate general civil war you got like 25% off ultimate admiral age of sail at launch. As someone who has played CK3 and really liked it, but never played Stellaris I’d have no problem paying a standard full price for what is to me a new game, but I can see how Stellaris veterans would see it as “samey”. So my thought would be a discount for people who already own Stellaris.

The Lyran! Thought they were a Starfleet Battles/Command (SB/SC) thing only! I love their ships with disruptors and Expanding Sphere Generators (ESG), what people usually despise. They are a felinoid race that are close to the Federation in some techs (like sensors), almost as strong as Gorns and their ships are Lego like. From two damaged destroyer you get one fully operational for free.

Would genuinely love a Warhammer or Mass Effect Total Conversion DLC/Game. I can see a setting for Mass Effect. You start out with a pre-established Galaxy. With exploration still existing. But taking a back-seat. But I can see something like starting out as the Humans a bit after the First Contact war has ended. Then being able to choose to wage war against the galaxy or follow how the game went down with the council races. Either way. You have about 30-50 Years to wage war and unite the galaxy before the Geth, Collectors, and finally the Reapers appear. Uniting or Conquering the Galaxy has benefits and debuffs. I think there is a lot of room for Paradox to explore having pre-established galaxies at the start of the game.

Stellaris is amazing for doing this sort of thing. Way back in the day I used to play Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. I really loved that game. I played the New Horizons mod for a bit but it didnt quite hit the mark for me. I'm going to try this current mod and wait for the official game.

It feels sort of disrespectful to the mod team who did the Star Trek mod to not loop them into things in some capacity. I mean they made a fantastic fan creation of Star Trek and have put a ton of legwork into it. Like it seems a bit silly to not capitalize on their passion by offering them some sort of role in developing this game.

Well they sort of did. Based off of some comments I have seen recently, at least some of them were involved in early testing and feedback on the title. However it sounds like at some point in the past the STNH team actually approached Paradox about doing a standalone title and was told they had no interest in officially working with the Trek license if I understand correctly.

I would say price will be the deciding factor in if people buy it or not. If you already put down several hundred $ for stellaris, and then would have to pay say another $50 or $60 for a separate game, when New Horizons is basically free, it might turn people away from it. Of course, if Star Trek Infinate is a mod for Stellaris, and not a stand alone game, that might make it more tempting. I guess time will tell.

We will have to wait and see what this looks like when it releases. But with where it appears to be based off of what has been shared at this point I am very skeptical this will come even remotely close to stacking up to STNH. But this looks to have a fraction of the content the mod provides and even with a fully dedicated development team it would probably take them a long time to get caught up to that much content and that's assuming the development team doesn't just move onto the next project after release. Not to mention as an official product, this will have constraints with licensing. They likely will not be able to use ships from things like the JJ movies, the other games, or even other time periods. Having more content, doesn't necessarily always mean better. But I haven't seen anything to this point that sets this aside from the mod. or even just regular stellaris.

I'm also highly skeptical PDX can pull off anything close quality wise. One data point - I noticed in the Star Trek Infinite trailer there's still a "Desert World" but in the modded gameplay the planets have clearly been reclassified as we see "Class M". Also it feels pretty cheap that they're not bothering to create a new set of generic stars and planets

Honestly I'd probably play both, and at least for the time being I'd still play the mod more. I'm excited to play the game and see how they've implemented this mission tree and what changes they make from Stellaris. However there just seems to me to be way more content in the mod, I mean you can play with the whole galaxy or any of the quadrants on their own or a few combinations, you can play scenarios and in the mirror universe. Plus you can play as pretty much every race that you would want to from the TV show, other than like... the Q. The mod also has custom ship models for what seems like half or more of the races. I also think the mod UIs are better than the UI we saw in the pictures. However after a few DLC for this new game and hopefully getting more of the galaxy to play with I could see myself playing less of the mod, depends how good a job they do with it.

I want to see it done well. So long as they treat the modding community well out of it. Stellaris should remain king, being able to pick your own race down to extreme details should keep it that way, but I'm curious to see how it does. Ive never played the mod, and I'd be willing to pay them for this game, but...but it will have to be priced to respect what I have already payed for Stellaris, or I'll simply got get the mod if I get the hankering.

Yea the one good thing about the Borg you can unlock and build Transwarp gates, but it's the loading times and the bug's that the mod has that's why I'm interested in getting Star Trek: Infinite. Because at some point in the Star Trek Stellaris the game will break and just have to start it again. My most played game on Steam!

Not super into the fact that 'The Federation' is an country in and of itself. Imo, it's should be an in-game goal- you can start as the humans, Vulgar etc and eventually *form* the Federation with a combo of Federation, Galactic Community, and Focus trees. Also, I think Focus Trees are a good fit. Traditions in Stellaris fill that niche- difference being that Traditions are modular, as basic Stellaris is an emergent history, while settings with a pre-set history (both irl and Star Trek) suit more tailored paths.

It starts too late for that, I think; by 2340 the Federation was already well established. Of course, that 1) leaves more thematic space for the mods, 2) starting in 2340 and being so TNG-centric could be argued as a negative itself, 3) there is the possibility that earlier starts where forming the Federation would fit could be DLC down the line.

If this experience will be half as good as Star Trek: Birth of the Federation, then I will be impressed and happy. But I have a feeling that many people who have played the Star Trek: Civilizations total conversion may be disappointed by Star Trek Infinite because it won't be as fully realized. I suspect that Infinite will hold back on some content in order to monetize it later down the line.

I played a game like this in the past, Star Trek Birth of The Federation and it was basically a modified Master Of Orion 3 i believe and it was great. I played it for years and have been really wanting a new version of this, I've tried repeatably over the years to get the old one going and it just won't work.

CKIII POD is already pretty much a separate game. Considering that Paradox owns the rights to the WOD franchise, I really wish they notice that piece of art and make in into a game. On the subject of the mod, 1) they tend to get maintained regardless of official implementation; 2) I bet that some of the mod's devs are taking part in this standalone project; 3) nothing is eternal, the mod would die one day, probably before the end of Stellaris dev cycle.

For me Stellaris is the best game Paradox ever did, i am fine with that. They can do a Star Wars one as well and i'd buy it.
