The brilliance of the Kirk / Spock relationship is that they are opposites that balance each other out. While both are highly intelligent, Kirk is too reckless, and Spock is too logical and reserved. I felt like the first one was enjoyable just because of some pretty good casting, the fun of seeing all the old Trek characters young again, and the updated visual FX. But then, you really had to switch your brain off to ignore the deficiencies in Orci & Kurtzman's script, Abram's directing, and also all the many massive plot holes and various unlikely contrivances. It was possible the first time I watched it but on subsequent viewings it got harder and harder to do. And then... with the sequels... I guess the novelty had worn off and I was just left with the bad scripts, plot holes, and questionable directorial decisions. And thus enjoyed them a lot less. I still like the cast they assembled but I wish they had at least gotten better writers. But I don't begrudge anyone else their enjoyment of these or any movies.
@bad-people6510 Жыл бұрын
@@nooneofconsequence1251 I think they're all bad, the first one was the least bad because it had basically one redeeming quality in there ALMOST being something there in Spock's character at the beginning. But putting aside how badly out of character everyone was, and the total ignorance of how anything in Star Trek works, even that one was still badly written. I mean major plot points were driven by the fact a character died because she fell while being transported while characters were transported OUT OF FREE-FALL *TWO MINUTES EARLIER!* And that's the BEST written of the three. This one starts out with a plot cul de sac that achieve nothing because they want to rehash the same character development that should have been done in the last movie, so the first 20 minutes of Kirk's story in this film is him getting back to where he was... at the beginning of the film. Then, we discover the revelation of the Federation using Khan, because only his genius and "savagery" could have imagined... a bigger ship. Then it ends with them discovering immortality juice, and just pretending that doesn't create a whole universe of writing problems. The less said about the third movie the better. It's best that I ward that off from my consciousness.

Hey, Marijchu! I'm glad that these films are generating an interest in science fiction and Star Trek. Whoever filled your head with the preconceived notions about sci-fi that dissuaded you from exploring the genre needs a good drubbing! It is a genre of endless possibility. The first Abrams foray into this alternate timeline was actually an excellent film and the portion of that story that took place in the Prime timeline is considered canon specifically the Romulan supernova that destroys Romulus. That's a major plot point in "Picard". The young cast is filled with talented actors who made the roles their own while evoking the original cast. It is a good Trek film and I very much enjoy it. This film WOULD HAVE BEEN a good Trek film, too, had they not re-adapted the plot of the classic second Trek movie, "The Wrath of Khan". Every alteration was for the worse! Benedict Cumberbatch is a terrific actor and he does Khan justice with a ferocious performance but the character is supposed to be South Asian! Ricardo Montalban wasn't South Asian either but he originated the role on TV and brought ethnicity to his majestic portrayal. I don't understand the insistence of new Trek to completely alter the look of the Klingons either! They have hairy manes! It's as if Chewbacca looked like a sasquatch in the Classic trilogy and then were to be arbitrarily transformed into a lizard-man for the Sequel trilogy; it makes no sense. The worst thing is what is done to the climax. Just terrible but I won't spoil anything for your viewing of the original. Without a frame of reference, this film is pretty good. With 50 years of Trek knowledge under your belt, this film is a slap in the face. Unfortunately, Abrams has admitted he falls into the former category and knows nothing about Trek which is why things only get worse. I just hope that the pacing and special effects of these shiny modern baubles don't spoil your appreciation of authentic Trek when you finally see it!

This movie is a master class in "tell, don't show" ... except that that's not a lesson you're supposed to learn. Since nothing we are supposed to believe is actually demonstrated through the plot or action on screen, everything has to be told to us through dialogue... like.. Khan does absolutely nothing to demonstrate his superior intellect, so we need to be told how dangerous and how smart he is over and over again. That's just one example. Orci & Kurtzman are two of the biggest hacks in Hollywood.

Within the Star Trek universe Lt. Spock gives the logic and reason within the parameters of Star Fleet protocols. Kirk gives the instinctual and gut reaction. And bones aka Dr. McCoy gives kirk his moral compass. You need all three characters in order to create the best version of Kirk. Kirk goes off and does what he does, at tremendous risk and the other two have to pull him back and keep them within certain parameters in order to be most effective within Star Fleet.

It's actually weird to see you say that, and I think you're kinda biased about this. Throughout both movies, and this one specifically, we constantly see that Kirk does NOT do "everything right" nor does he win his fights, but he does bring everyone together, so his crew can work with him on winning those fights. Neither did he think he'd survive the radiation, he just wanted to save his people. It's Spok who's a "superman" among their crew actually, so it's weird to see that bias. Like, even during the very first his scene in the first movie he lost the bar fight and was saved by Pike. He's the necessary catalyst that makes his crew work the right way and makes all the right decisions to push his crew so they can achieve their goal, not the "one-man superhero". I really don't understand where you got that idea from 😕

this is where fans of Trek began hating on JJ, because of how he handled his take on one of the most iconic movies of the franchise. the original version of this movie sets up a trilogy involving Spock: here, there, and back again... classic hero trope. this movie just has one character that kinda sounds like the original, and it kind of sets it's own demise: who's gonna need Starfleet anymore if one can just teleport themselves wherever they want? who needs a starship when you have omnipresence? that's the same question that causes Kirk to question "God" in Star Trek 5, and the one question that resolves the whole movie!: if he needs a starship he's not "God", so what the fuck are we doing *here* !?

Hi Mari. The dilemma you have regarding the captain Kirks personality occurs at everyone who tends to lean towards Spock. Captain Kirk is impetuous, emotional and unpredictable. So if you're watching him in a TV show or movie. he's a compelling character, but if you work with him he is annoying and dangerous. Because he doesn't follow protocol and you have to trust him into the most dangerous situation with no back up. Many people watching Star Trek love this about Kirk, But as you see it's very dangerous. It can yield tremendous results but at the cost of tremendous danger

Science Fiction is best when it becomes a mirror of us; how we live, what we do, how we think, both the good and the bad. We want to see ourselves in the future, so things have to look right and real; feel real. That's part of my problem here. None of them have any idea who Khan is except old Spock. Before being frozen, Khan ruled ASIA. It's like if Kirk had never heard of Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great.

Just FYI, science fiction can get way nerdy like the old Star Trek shows and movies lol. J.J. Abrams made sure that this reboot was... accessible. If you can find these out of the woodwork, then sci-fi can be "cool" as you please! :)

Fun fact when kirk and Scotty were talking about the torpedoes at 9:40 the machine behind them is a real life high energy laser....near the ending of this film has parallels with another Star Trek film but I won't spoil it for you you'll have to find out.

I like the Easter egg with the scene of the model rockets, showing real life historical rockets and Federation spacecraft. It includes a rocket from SpaceX and the theoretical Alcubierre Drive spaceship.

I've lost many a job by disagreeing. However, later down the road, the business folded, because of the very thing I was warning about. I sleep good.

The best one of the new movies imo. :) The next one has more plot holes than the first one and if Simon Pegg says lassie one more time....

The big emotional moment is informed by the original movie Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan. Kirk got emotional when Spock was killed, exclaiming "Khan!" that's why in this Spock exclaims the same thing.

To understand the true battle with Khan, please watch the TV episode called Space Seed from the original Star Trek series. Followed by Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan. It will make this movie fall into place. Also, you will get to see the original actors and hopefully fall in love with the entire Star Trek universe. Love your reactions, please keep it up.
