Chekov wasn't going to be recast. Chris Pine dropped out of the project like 5 or 6 years ago, after Paramount allegedly tried to cut his fee for the movie. The 4th director attached to the film dropped out last year. I really kind of doubt we'll see another.

The reason Bones was so blunt with Spock - "I don't know what Jim would do without you, but me, I'd throw a party" - is because in the TV show and the subsequent 80's movies Spock and Bones have a love/hate relationship, Bones can't comprehend a person who has no emotions and Spock gets perplexed by Bones' sentimentality. They are like chalk and cheese but they respect each other and do care about each other, they are just opposites.

I like how they paid tribute to Leonard Nimoy (Ambassador Spock) and Anton Yelchin (Chekhov). The way McCoy “stole” the bottle from Chekhov’s locker and three glasses were poured then Kirk’s toast at the end. I think this series was smart to have time travel to change the timeline so they can reboot it without having to follow the original series. The song they played when they were disrupting the ships was the same song from the first film when young Kirk was joyriding in his stepdads car.

This was the first of the reboot films where I really felt the chemistry between the crew members. It's a potential tragedy they won't make more movies with this cast. Between _Into Darkness_ and _Beyond,_ Leonard Nimoy (Original Spock) passed away. That's one reason why this movie was more emotional for me than the others. Just a month before the release of this movie, Anton Yelchin (Chekov) tragically died. His SUV slipped out of gear and crushed him when he got out to do something. His parents sued the auto maker and won a lot of money. Anton was their only child. It brought a tear to my eye when they honored both of them in the credits. Addie, you're right about the maroons being a great uniform. They're my favorite of all the different versions of Starfleet unis. That was an actual picture of all the original cast members. It was taken during the production of _Star Trek V_ IIRC. That moment, with the original theme music playing softly in the background, choked me up.

I am an old-school Star Trek fan basically ever since I was a little kid, and I actually like these movies a lot! (Especially Beyond) Also I totally agree with you that if these movies open the door to create new Star Trek fans, that's never a bad thing! I definitely think you should react to the original Star Trek movies now! You now have enough familiarity with these characters and this universe that you will have no trouble understanding the older films. They're not as flashy and as full of insane action as these modern movies, but they are still excellent films, full of good characters and interesting plots and ideas! If you decide to do it, I'll be here for it! I absolutely love this movie! By FAR my favorite of this trilogy. This is the one that feels the most like a classic Star Trek episode, just blown up to blockbuster proportions! They're actually out exploring space and seeking out strange new worlds! But my favorite aspect of this movie is the character development. It was pretty brilliant to split the crew up and pair them with interesting and unconventional other characters. I especially enjoy all the Spock and Bones scenes. And I really like that Kirk has finally developed into the leader he was always supposed to be. He is a man of action, and a bold risk-taker, but he is now tempered with patience, compassion, a duty to his crew, and to his morals. That is what a Starfleet captain should be. Also, I like that they toned down the horn-dog element of his character. :P Classic Kirk certainly had a lot of romances, but they were usually pretty classy and dignified. Seeing Kirk act like a horny frat-dude in these movies got sort of annoying, so I'm glad he seems to have moved past that. :P I don't know if they'll ever continue this reboot series. I hope they do, I'd love to see this cast reunited one more time. But if this is where this series ends, I think I'm ok with that. It ends on a positive, hopeful note. We know their adventures will continue, even if we don't get to see them. That can be enough for me. Loved your reactions to these movies, Addie! Glad you've enjoyed your Star Trek journey so far, and I hope you continue it! There is a whole galaxy of Star Trek out there for you to enjoy, if you want to! BTW, if you're in the mood for another piece of EXTREMELY high-quality science fiction, might I recommend you check out the Amazon Prime series, "The Expanse"? The admiral from this movie who was the indian woman with the awesome, smokey voice is actually a main character on that show. And "The Expanse" is just one of the best sci-fi series ever, period. Highly recommend!

McCoy's remarks aside, Spock didn't give Uhura the necklace or ask her to keep it because it was a tracking device. He gave it to her out of love and asked her to keep it for the same reason. It just also happened to be made of a metal that emits benign radiation and was unique on that planet, thus making it useful as a tracking device. Gotta love gifts with multiple uses.

I’m in the same boat as you. Born in ‘68, I grew up on reruns of original Trek & all the movies & newer series. While I was never a die hard Trekkie, I’ve seen many, many hours of Star Trek in my time. I thought the reboots were fantastic. Perhaps I never felt so connected to the characters that these new movies upset some delicate balance for me, though I can understand that feeling (I have difficulty watching the Star Wars prequels & sequels, but I think that’s simply because they were poorly executed).
@Saje3D
@Saje3D Жыл бұрын
That’s not why I didn’t like the prequels. Anakin simply sucked as a protagonist. I just never really liked him. Was a cute kid, I suppose, but so what? So were the Jedi kids who didn’t survive later in the series. “That’s not how I wanted it to go/thought it would go” is the laziest kind of criticism, IMO, so I get your point overall. It just has very little to do with why I disliked the prequels. The protagonist was a creepy creep. That’s most of it right there. Plus the unnecessary addition to the lore about what the Force was all about. Unnecessary and, IMO, stupid. The extended universe did a much better job with the lore, imo. The lore the later movies abandoned entirely. For no particularly good reason, IMO. For my part, the things I liked best about the whole universe had next to nothing to do with George Lucas. Things he retconned out of existence at the first opportunity. The Bad Batch has nothing on Rogue and Wraith squadrons. Those books were a hell of a lot of fun.

Edison, prior to being given the Captain's chair of the Franklin, was what's known as a MACO. Essentially the non-Starfleet military of Earth. We first saw them in the Prequel TV series Star Trek Enterprise, where a detachment of MACOs were stationed on the ship during a conflict with the Xindi, which Edison/Krall had mentioned. The Romulan War happened years later before the Federation was founded, and MACO was disbanded. So, as a life-long soldier, during a time of several devastating wars, Edison didn't understand a world without conflict, thinking that struggle was something Humanity needed in order to not be weak. Rather than Post-Tramatic Stress, this was more a Traumatic Dependency of sort. Some soldiers (and military obsessed non-combatants) cannot see value without military strength. The social commentary of this particular film.

ADDIE = MY FAVORITE NEW TREKKIE!!!! I've watched Star Trek my whole life and I love the new movies! Some people are just sour about things. It's not like these are a disrespectful reboot -- they're explicitly written to fit into Star Trek as a different timeline via time travel, which is a subject VERY much at the heart of Star Trek. And rather than disrespectfully throwing away Star Trek stories, they include new takes on classic stories. Not all classic stuff was good either, a blind spot that superfans of anything always have. These new movies are absolutely a love letter to Star Trek, and I can't imagine anyone making a new Star Trek movie any better. I can certainly imagine a lot worse. Star Trek is fun, funny, curious, exciting, bombastic, beautiful to listen to, and to look at. There's a little bit of Star Trek in us all, Addie!

I'm 45 years old, I've been a Star Trek fan my whole life, and these movies are fine. I enjoy them. I don't care if they're not exactly like the older stuff or they contradict someone's idea of "canon". The cast is great and they're fun to watch. I think my fellow Star Trek fans would be a lot happier if they remembered that it's all pretend. As far as Krall's true nature, the movie didn't go a great job of explaining this but as I understand it Captain Edison and his 2 surviving crew members-the people who became Manus and the alien lady who led the Enterprise into the trap-found the "life-extending" tech left behind by the natives of Altamid, which worked by sucking the life force out of other beings, and in the process the person using the tech took on the characteristics of their victim. Krall and friends had been absorbing alien lizard-people for years, which is why they looked more alien at the beginning of the movie. But as Krall absorbed more humans, he started to look more human again. All of Krall's "soldiers" were basically robots (the "drone workforce" Edison mentioned in one of his logs).

Edison's backstory is more connected to the series Star Trek: Enterprise. That series took place before the original series, so the Federation didn't exist when Edison made his mark. He was, as Kirk stated simply, a soldier. Highly decorated in the wars Star Fleet fought in before the Federation was founded. Once the Federation came into play, his branch was dissolved and he was made the captain of the Franklin. Edison wasn't an explorer though. He was a fighter. He was angry at the Federation because after his ship crashed on that planet, most of his crew were killed. Three survivors were all that was left and they felt that they were abandoned by the Federation they helped build. The USS Franklin wasn't even a new ship when Edison became her captain. He cared for his ship but eventually lost his way with all the resentment he held. Edison became Krall and sought to harm the Federation, not seeing that he was waging war on the people he once fought for a long time ago. He did admit to Kirk that he missed being Edison though. As Edison all those years ago, he had a purpose to fight and protect humanity so that they could take their place among the stars. As Krall, all he had was his hatred. It's rather sad when people lose their way.

Your comment early on about the different fans/Trekkies criticizing these movies..... let may say that Star Trek: TOS is something I was allowed to stay up late to watch with my mom and dad so many years ago. It was black and white and on CRT. The feelings of those experiences have never left. I have watched every iteration of Star Trek from the various series to the cartoons and there are things (and specific episodes and concepts I like and dislike in every series). I'm glad this version (the Kelvin timeline) introduced you (and many younger folks to this world. Regardless, of how they are perceived...... these movies were made for newer audiences, with characterizations in place to remind some of us older folks about the show through a nostalgia aspect. I have my favorites and they include several episodes of TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Discovery, and yes.... even Picard. My advice is to take your own journey. The original show was wayyyyy ahead of it's time. I believe it had the first interracial kiss on television, which was huge and groundbreaking, and it was a movement that one of the space shuttles was named Enterprise after the USS Enterprise. There's video of the original cast watching it's arrival on an airfield. I believe the space shuttle Enterprise is on display at a museum in real life somewhere (just don't remember which one right now, but it is easily searchable material). The older movies/shows will likely feel a little outdated to you, but the sets' stunts and costumes were in large part..... practical, and the storylines have weight about real human dilemma that would occur if we got to this stage of developments, and it treats with respect, how we might negotiate with alien species' that may not share some of our belief systems. You've gotten a small hint of the overarching concept already, called The Prime Directive. There is also something called a Temporal Prime Directive you may hear about (depending on how much you go down this rabbit hole). The entire set of movies and shows is worth a watch/reaction to (imo). It gives you lots of content, definitely has an audience, gives you a series of shows/dilemmas to react to over time, and it shows in real time how different timelines of the future are handled for character and could potentially play out. It is my observation.... that's all.... not a preference one way or the other. Star Trek is something very unique based on how it relates to each person, but there is lots of great content for tour channel with these reactions (in my opinion).

This is also my favorite of the Kelvin Timeline films. Mainly because many elements of the classic STAR TREK have been brought in here again. Many of the old fans who were let down by the first films have come back here. Unfortunately, the film was not a great success at the box office, so there hasn't been a 4th film with this crew so far. The fact that Anton Yelchin had a fatal accident shortly after filming didn't make things any easier. Should Chekov be recast or not? For me, the film contains a lot of nice links to the well-known series. This is how the MACO (Captain Edison's / Krall's unit) were introduced in the Enterprise series (2001-2005). Little connections like that make the film so good for me. Ok, he has weaknesses. Some serious ones too. But that's almost normal for SciFi movies :-D But I think it's nice that the films had exactly the right effect for you. Bringing the franchise closer to someone who doesn't know STAR TREK. So - goal achieved. Have fun if you want to delve further into the Trek universe...

If they're going to stick with this crew, then I think they should say that Chekov went on to another assignment and bring in Lt. Arex, since he was the character who replaced Chekov in the animated series from the 70s. But honestly, I think the best thing to do with the movies is to bring in a **new** crew with a **new** ship. "Strange New Worlds" already has a Kirk, a Spock, an Uhura, and an Enterprise. Let **them** deal with those characters and let the movies focus on some new territory.

If they wish, there is a way to write Chekov out that's "canon." Say he left the _Enterprise_ to serve aboard the _Reliant._ That's what he did in _The Wrath of Khan._

It is not a reboot, it's another time line from the original Star Trek. It is all in the first "reboot" . In the original one Kirks father did not die , but Spock dies in the second movie " The wrath of Khan" I know this cuz am a dork who use to watch it as a kid.

The USS Franklin, and the crew of Cape.Edison, at a nod to the series "Enterprise" (Star Trek, 2001-'05) which was set before the Origin Series. The Warp 4 ship, Franklin, which Edison talks at the end of the wars against the Xindi, and the Romulans, lore from ENT. Edison, the lady alien, and the alien who killed Jayla's Father, are reveled to all have been human survivors, changed identity like Krall -near 100 years ago. This film came out during the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, so there are several nods that You, Addie, would not get, as you are not a long-term fan of Trek, but are rewarding to fans, when you think and realize. The Yorktown city was filmed in Dubai and U.A.E., location in British Columbia, Canada for the planet's forests and rock quarry.Most previous Trek movies were filmed in the USA, with only a film in Iceland before.

I've said it before, these are great, accessible entries into the franchise. As someone thats been a Trek fan my entire life, theres a lot of things I take issue with about these but for someone just trying to get into it, it's a solid place to start. Beyond is probably the most "Trek" of the three. Addie don't be too intimidated by the fans, its just a very old franchise that we all love and differing opinions abound. Trek is at its core, unlike a lot of sci-fi, about depicting a brighter future for humanity. Where we've matured beyond our petty hatreds and insatiable greed to better ourselves as a whole. Some of the movies and shows capture that ideal better then others.

29:41 I get chills often when I hear “Space, the final frontier…”. This was one of those times. Fans seem more accepting of Star Trek Beyond. It was more like a Trek story and less like Star Wars. No miracle life saving blood, either. Really good movie. I encourage you to look at the original films in the franchise.

Hi Addie! Great job on this Trilogy. Don't mind anyone trying to say you should've watched any other movie first. You're getting the exact essence of what STAR TREK is all about. You are now able to watch any of them and understand. Hopefully we will get to see them with you. Always a good time to watch a Star Trek movie!... FYI: if you look closely at Jayla's makeup, you will find that it is in the shape of two bird creatures facing each other and another flying downward in attack posture. Too cool!!!

Awesome that you're reacting to this. I always love your reactions. I actually watched this movie earlier today myself. Also if you're interested in checking out more Star Trek, definitely watch the original series, or perhaps even the old movies. Star Trek The Next Generation is probably the best series with Captain Picard and all. Star Trek Enterprise is a prequel series that shows the beginnings of Starfleet. Star Trek Voyager is pretty good. The newer series, Star Trek Discovery is pretty good, but I would recommend watching at least the original series or just the movies to understand a bit more. Star Trek has much to it similar to Star Wars.

Addie, I agree with your take about newer iterations of beloved I.P.'s. Long time fans can be the most vocal about their feelings regarding newer adaptations of their favorite shows. Especially when they don't like them. I know people who have discovered Star Trek because of the newer films. I'm old, so I guess my views about rebooting has changed on some level. Newer fans may not have discovered the TV shows and movies that came before otherwise, who knows.

The latest I've heard on my "reboot movies" is moving to The Next Generation crew, which could be interesting. Yes, the red uniforms from the original films, nicknamed "Monster Maroons," are my favorite Star Trek uniforms. This is my favorite of the reboot films, finally really getting Kirk's character right. I get that the previous two were trying for a younger, less seasoned and experienced Kirk, but I feel like they failed on that front, instead only taking Kirk's worst (and often exaggerated by the fandom) traits and outright removing his positive ones, the ones that made him a great Captain. It just felt like was missing the creativity, compassion, and leadership that Kirk has. Not that those qualities were budding and needed to be nurtured, but that they were absent. This film shows them. While the original movies do assume some knowledge of TOS, I don't think you really need it to go into them. Star Trek II is basically a follow up to a TOS episode, but everything is explained well enough you could probably grasp it. I'd love to see your reactions to the original films.

There has been talks of a fourth movie since Beyond came out, but this movie didn't do as well at the box office, Paramount has been focusing on re-establishing Star Trek on Television with Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy for the last few years. Add on the fact that they can't decide on what script they want to film, directors keep leaving to work on other projects, and the cast is so busy particularly Karl Urban (McCoy) with The Boys, Zoe Saldana with Marvel and the Avatar sequels, and Chris Pine with DC Comics based movies and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, they just haven't been able to get everybody together to shoot the fourth movie. Also, it's not surprising Beyond isn't your favourite. It was made with Star Trek fans in mind as it was released in 2016, the year of Star Trek's 50th Anniversary, and Paramount finally realized that they needed to get long time Star Trek fans back onboard, as the previous two movies had alienated many of us due to the fact that they were hard on action sequences, gratuitous violence, and separating them from the rest of the franchise. Star Trek fans enjoyed Beyond the most, but, it also didn't make as much money as the first two made as a result. So the fourth movie has been shelved for the time being. I'm a life-long Trekkie, so if you need any behind the scenes trivia, just let me know. I know waaaay too much. Lol. Great reaction as always Addie!
