10 years old and still my #1 movie of 2013! Benedict Cumberbatch gives an incredible performance here as this main villain He’s also very sympathetic given how much wrong was done to him and his own crew by Starfleet A major death in here is a callback to an older film yet it’s kinda tough to be on board with because they rectify it so quickly Yet the exchange between two players is quite emotional A lot of people gave issue that this was basically a remake of ‘Wrath of Khan’ and tarnished its legacy But I did enjoy the modern reinterpretation of the character and Cumberbatch gives a powerful performance being the right amount of sneering elitism Amazing music by Michael Giacchino particularly the piano solo Amazing action and effects with excellent sound mixing Love Alice Eve as Carol, she’s more than just a pretty face for Kirk to gush over Is there anything you would not do for your family, is it better not to feel at all, a ship shouldn’t go down without her captain, it’s not our job to seek revenge, there will always be those who seek to do us harm and risk awakening the same darkness inside us It’s more as a spy thriller like mission impossible but there are still things to enjoy as popcorn entertainment with allusions to the Bush administration and post 9/11 nationalistic rhetoric making this politically minded A lot of allegory here for militarization too It’s the character focus, action set pieces, and unexplored themes like friendship/emotion Abrams does well unlike other Star Trek movies With these newer films it’s still the culmination of everything that happened before and this new Kelvin timeline opening new sides to its characters

Matinee seems about right. The 1st movie raised above my expectations and I loved it, but this was just a fun summer action movie. Would've been great if they used an original story instead of just remaking The Wrath of Khan.

Movie turns 6 today! I don’t hate it but I understand a lot of people’s frustrations saying it’s a remake of Wrath of Khan Benedict Cumberbatch gives a powerful performance

Ultimately, I relate more to this new incarnation. I relate because it contains, for me, everything that TOS was absent. It has thankfully maintained for me the things that TOS did right also. Now, the sting you would feel reading my comment on TOS is similar to the sting I might feel if you were to criticize the latest incarnation by comparing it to the old, rather than judging it on its own merits. Ultimately, you choose what you like and you stick with it.

It's a reinvention of the story to suit a new generation. It serves them, not those familiar.

I thought this film was good but not the best. I really love Star Trek 2009 which actually introduced me to a lot of things with the world of Star Trek.

Aw, I had thought it was better than sex even though there were a lot of weak points but, after listening to your review I change my mind to full price.

But when it comes to this film, it's a reinvention. It will take what it wants from old, it will change what it wants and introduce what it wants, and it will do all of this for the benefit of its own audience, not that of the original series. And a side note also, TNG received a lot of criticism from TOS fans for almost the exact same reasons. Every single version of Star Trek has its own cult audience, and they fight each other every single day.

One thing I have to disagree on would be that only Star Trek fans would feel appalled by this movie. It's also appalling for people not liking summer blockbuster type movies in general, and for people not liking scifi with stupid plot and clumsy telegraphing.

As someone who has seen a handful of TOS (and found the characters archetypal, the acting bland and sometimes bad, the writing and themes quite heavy handed or clunky, and the pacing...oh geez), I can understand why it was cancelled so early in its life. From everything I have read, The Next Generation has Star Trek's largest audience and is the reason why it is international. I have seen Wrath of Khan and its sequel, also.

Im almost at point of giving up on Star Trek altogether now, after hearing about Pegg writing Star Trek 3, thats like almost nail in coffin for me. Im just gonna relive the prime universe over and over untill they perhaps reboot it again one day (its possible, considering they're trying to do that yet again with Spiderman franchise now).

A lot of nitpicking...

How? This reinvention has disposed of the old cannon, quite specifically within its own narrative, and is providing an up-to-date version for those not previously indoctrinated into Star Trek. It isn't aimed at old fans, it's aimed at new fans. Khan is a reinvention in this film. Outside of his name and the Kirk/Spock scene towards the end, the films doesn't actually steal anything. Khan is the equivalent of the Joker in this universe. You couldn't resist featuring him, in whatever form.

at first this movie was a letdown for me.. especially after the first one which exceeded all my expectations and became my favorite trek movie but after watching it a few more times it grew on me and its now my second favorite trek movie barely behind the first one...I agree with the spill crew on the Khan line which is just horrible and them switching places was just trying too hard but Wrath of Khan(while a great trek movie) has always been overrated to me and thats probably part of the reason why I'm not bothered as much..I love Ricardo Montalban in many movies and roles much more than his Khan which while he was good as Khan I like Benedict better...i absolutely cant agree with the spill crew saying there's no emotion..the scene with Pike dying(who I really wish was in the series longer but at least he went out in a powerful scene) and Kirk crying is amazing to me and the acting is great all throughout this movie by everyone from Pine to Quinto to Peter Weller(whose always great especially as the Villain) and even the lesser used characters(which is my main problem with the movie that there's not enough Chekhov(though they did make up for that in Beyond, even better since Anton passed away) Bones,Scotty and Sulu but what we did get was great..the guys seem to have a problem with Kirk and his fighting again but like the 2009 trek they seem to forget that in that movie he was either going up against multiple opponents or facing Spock(for Cyrus to be such a hardcore trekkie he seems to forget Vulcans are much stronger than humans) in this movie he's going against Khan or against some of the assholes on the vengeance in which he was fighting pretty well so I'm not sure what they talking about..I loved the action(yea a little more breathing moments woulda been nice but the crisis on crisis thing didn't bother me either), the pace and the cameo from Old Spock was great as well but I wish he was there longer ...the Carol Marcus scene was dumb but whatever but overall this movie is amazing imo and I'd give it a high Full Price despite the issues i still loved it...and Cyrus was wrong no time travel in the third one

But Burton-Batman fans hated the Nolan Batman universe for touching the character. Classic Batman fans hated the more modern take because it wasn't the character from their version of the story. Original BSG fans hated the reinvented BSG for almost all of the same reasons why some TOS Star Trek fans hate the latest incarnation. Some will always hate new, no matter what. Ultimately, you either like the new direction or you don't. If you don't though, why then would you approach its sequel?
