This is part 1 in a 2 part series where I review some episodes of Star Trek, this one is on The Next Generation, while part 2 will be on Star Trek: Voyager! I plan to do Star Trek: Deep Space 9 and Star Trek The Original Series in a 2 parter in the future. But if I actually will is debatable.

Ah, Dr. Beverly Crusher. Something about her made the writers... insane. They threw her off the show after the first season, then brought her back with practically no fanfare in the third. Her first love affair not Picard centered was a trill - who moved from an alien man to Riker to lesbianism in one episode. Then she was the only one left on the ship while everyone else was removed. And the tap dancing. And those green tights. And then this... stuff. What was it about her? Whatever it was, it made my teenage self fall deeply in love.

What always surprised me most about this show by the time I'd watched the final episode is that the ship didn't have an entire dedicated insane asylum wing. What those poor bastards have seen and experienced is leagues beyond what even the most hardened spacefarers could ever be reasonably expected to endure. In one episode, most of the crew had their evolution forcefully and rapidly reversed, Riker once had to experience every single negative memory he'd ever had in the form of dreams to fight off a parasitic infection. Hell, in the first episode Picard had to try and craft a compelling argument with no preparation to convince Q to not straight up kill all humans everywhere, instantly.
@Grizabeebles
@Grizabeebles Жыл бұрын
The reason Starfleet personnel seem so well-adjusted is because the Federation has perfected mind-control and routinely erase traumatic memories of events suffered by crew members. In the TOS episode "Dagger of the Mind" Kirk goes to a Federation insane asylum. There's a device there that rewrites the brain's neurochemistry synapse by synapse. It's also been accepted as a standard medical practice for long enough that nobody questions it. That could be part of the reason why so many crew members keep such detailed and up-to-date personal logs. That way they have a record of everything they can't remember but don't have to carry the horror with them.

I remember reading one Star Trek book by Peter David, "Q, Squared", I believe, and the crew has an outside observer from the Federation show up for that exact reason, to question the crew and figure out just WHY all this weird shit keeps happening to them; "Captain, you encounter temporal anomalies at over TEN TIMES the standard fleet average and you get in to situations we don't even have a name for. Just what the hell is an 'inverse causality loop'??"

@artemis5168

@@FTZPLTC Yeah, in the book the main reason the Enterprise keeps encountering so much weird stuff is because Trelane, Squire of Gothos (ret), became fascinated by the original Enterprise after his encounter with Kirk, and because of that developed a morbid fascination with the subsequent ones and basically kept playing with any ship named "Enterprise". Not a great explanation, but it's something. lol

I think its why TNG so memorable. Campy, bad and or good episodes came out of that process but the writers didn't forget it wasn't about the science but about the characters. I feel like Star Trek is often a victim of people taking it a bit too seriously. It's held hostage by it's own humongous amount of established canon, and a fanbase that holds every single minute detail under a microscope. I think it's lot easier to enjoy when you realise it's basically a soap opera, that just happens to be set in space, allowing it to play with our ideas of what could be possible in the future. It's at its best when it is free to dabble in the whimsical and the barely plausible. It doesn't really need to be realistic to work, it just needs to be thought provoking.

As an energy nerd, I have to point out that it takes more energy to liquify hydrogen than you get back by burning it. All that hydrogen that you burn to almost get some tourists to space actually STARTED as water, and it took quite a bit of energy to convert that water into liquid hydrogen. Its fantastic that the burning of liquid hydrogen doesn't itself create more CO2 considering that it already has a sizable carbon footprint just by existing. All this zero carbon nonsense is just marketing until the last carbon producing power plant is turned off and all the industrial processes used to produce and maintain our power generating equipment is **actually** net-zero carbon. Until then? Using electricity? Well you aren't zero emissions then, are you?

Star Trek is one of my favorite series of all time because you'll go from some of the best writing in television history to just some unhinged shit in like 2 episodes. DS9 was the only one that actually had a pretty consistent level of quality and even then there were a lot of batshit insane episodes.

@@JulianLopez-nd9ts The first 2 seasons of DS9 are still way more consistent than TNG and VOY. Like I think that there's only 1 truly bad episode in season 1 of DS9. Compare that to season 1 of TNG and there's no contest.

@@Drybread Personally, I’m of the opposite opinion where I honestly think S1 of DS9 is worse than TNG and VOY. TNG’s season 1 I kinda like because it gets solidly into “so bad it’s good” territory. For VOY, it’s the show I grew up with so I have a soft spot for it. That being said, I can definitely understand your viewpoint on this and ultimately it’s all personal opinion. I’m also a bit biased against DS9 because of how it stole a bunch of stuff from Babylon 5 (which I also think did that stuff better and was a better show overall).

Voyager has great episodes, hands down some of the best, but in general, the crew is so generic. The Doctor is awesome and 7 of 9 has turned out well, but the rest, imo, is not very interesting. Harry Kim? Yawn. I do like Janeway, but her character depth at times seems limited to: "I like black coffee." OK, harsh, she has a tough job out there, but with only a few exceptions, her moral compass is bent less than Sisko's. (Actually, belay that, she does cross the line quite a few times) Picard was once my hands down fave Captain, but Sisko has won me over. DS9 is, again, my opinion, the best of the entire franchise. TNG has some great characters, the bridge crew is extremely likable and epic, but I think DS9 has the best crew, villains (Dukat, Weyoun, Kai Winn) and "frenemies" (Quark, Garak). I enjoyed Disco but have some reservations, I liked Picard and don't know why it was so hated. SNW has been fun. Pike has some of Sisko's whimsy. Jury is out. Lower Decks is the best Trek in production at the moment. Trek needs to be taken down a peg. It's funny and the stories can be good. Plus, it's TNG-era, which I prefer to the current crop. Mostly in look. TOS, of course, a world apart. Hard to compare cuz the effects are limited and the stories very 60's "sociology sci-fi" in a way. Love it. But honestly, despite growing up on TOS, the TNG-era is my preference. Still, TOS is maybe the most "magical" in taking me to weird head-spaces. Enterprise gets lost in the shuffle. It's got good stories and characters, but the whole Xindi thing, which entered canon outta nowhere, irked me. Lots of lost opportunities with Enterprise. The finale was a ripoff for that cast and us viewers. But yea, Bakula as Archer, Trip, Malcolm, T'Pol, Phlox, Hoshi, the Boomer dude, all decent characters. Good overall, but missing....something. Haha. I didn't really respond directly, but i've been mulling this a lot recently. I think DS9 deserves at least 10 episodes to see where Sisko ended up. Or not. It was such a great iteration of Trek. I'd like to see more of DS9 than any other series. It did end well, but there's still a big "?" over Sisko's fate. I've not seen a Trek series I don't like. They are all good, and a bad episode of Trek beats most other TV any day of the week. Even some of those awful se01 eps of TNG. Opinions only. I'm sure others have theirs and equally valid reasons for why they prefer what they do. All is good with Trek.

There's so many parts of Voyager that I hope you tackle. I rewatched the whole series a few years ago and it was a delightful treat but it certainly has some questionable episodes, and, as has been covered on other channels, their limited resources aren't so limited, like the sheer number of photon torpedoes they use when supposedly they couldn't make any more, at least until seven of nine comes aboard.
