A little detail I like is Rutherford highlighting Mariner's conflicting assessments on Ransom: "Wait, is he dumb or playing mind games?". I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it's not only a useful way to reinforce that Mariner's actions later are unwarranted and actually harmful to herself and those around her, but is a nice subtle bit of social commentary. Also, I find it funny that while the problems with Boimler's rooms were certainly external, he only found comfort in cramped bunk-like spaces: his ensign bunk, the crawlspace, and now bunking with Rutherford.

After these first two episodes and thinking about Lower Decks so far, I've come to the conclusion that Jack Ransom is a great Starfleet Officer. He knew exactly what Boimler and Mariner needed to handle their promotions better showing that as a commanding officer, he knows how to get the best out of his subordinates and help them grow. He's gone headfirst into adventure after adventure, and leads by example. And, aside from when he got turned into a giant head, he's been a great First Officer to Captain Freeman. Honestly one of the things I really appreciate about this episode is it's placement in the season. They could have easily dragged out Mariner's rebellious attitude thing for the majority of the season and made her trying to get demoted her season long "arc". But that have looked really bad on both her and Ransom because there has to be a point where even the most supportive XO has to do his job and demote her. And that's something I could see from season 1 or 2 Mariner, but I love that the writers were smart enough to go, "Yes, she would rebel, but she's smart enough at this point to recognize her faults when called on them." So getting it out of the way early avoids retreading all of that with her and I'm as super excited to see where they take as am I the rest of the gang. And yeah, Ransom's "misunderstanding" in the gym was pretty clumsy. I mean just look at his face when he said Mariner wasn't going to be his problem anymore! That wasn't casual chat with a friend face! That was nefarious scheming face!

The Moopsie is my favorite Star Trek character and I can't think of anything that will change that. What happened to Rutherford makes so much sense. He thinks he needs to do something amazing to get promoted and that there's a culture because they offer it and he refuses every time he does something incredible. It doesn't occur to him that this is a check-in, not a prerequisite. "Another outstanding job. Are you sure you don't want a promotion? OK, maybe next time." becomes "You only get a chance whenever you do something that makes us think you might have changed your mind." Him being ready to accept the promotion is all they are waiting for. I think this episode pushes Ransom into the position of being the best XO on any show. He brings out the best in the crew by aggressively understanding them. I'm not sure how long I want Toothy Ransom to come back, but I hope at least one more episode.

"What I love about lower decks is the like mundane everyday Star Trek stuff that I feel makes these characters feel alive" Yeah -- one of the things I think that TNG did very well was showing characters outside of work. You'd see crusher at work and O'brien would just be in the background in a wetsuit getting his shoulder fixed again, or people would just be walking around the ship talking about something, or exercising (lol). The same with DS9 too, where most of the plot happens while people are talking off-duty in Quark's bar, etc. This kind of... non-action scene? Seems to have got left behind sometimes, although SNW having the captain just cooking something up while people talk was a good continuation. I totally agree with you about the “overhearing and misunderstanding trope.” I was so nervous they’d make Mariner do something reckless like let the Moopsy out, but they didn’t. A lot of shows now overuse the “self sabotaging” trope to the point they make the character unlikeable (e.g. Bojack Horseman, Better Call Saul, tbh even Chapel in SNW was a little irritating) but Lower Decks hasn’t gone down that route and I respect them for it. I love how every season shows all of the characters work to improve themselves and their relationships. They realize the characters’ flaws and decide to make them grow rather than crater. Love it. Also, I wonder if we will get more closure with Rutherford’s past. Considering he used to be so different I wonder what his relationship is like with his family/friends before starfleet. The spirit of lower decks is that it focuses on the epic adventures of the ship from the perspective of the grunts. Someday Mariner and Boimler may be commanding their own ships, but as long the focus doesn't stray from the frustration, busy work, and comraderie of those lowest in command it will still be lower decks. My current theory about the mystery shuttle: Maybe it is an AI, but it's not inherently hostile, it just preemptively acts in kind. Before each ship was destroyed the captain ordered the destruction of the shuttle. Perhaps if they had made more earnest attempts at communication or scanned for life forms the interaction would have gone differently. (This theory isn't based on Trek lore but actually Star Wars, Luke's cave test on Dagobah: "What's in there?" "Only what you take with you?") And finally Gary gets best one-liner of the episode with: "I need to replicate some new pants."

I'm with you in disliking the "overheard wrong" trope, but I think it worked in this instance, because, "Not my problem," could mean a ton of different things. Maybe Ransom was getting his own command, maybe Mariner was being transferred to a better posting, maybe Freeman was going to hand her to another officer to manage, because she felt she had been reformed (remember Capt. Freeman ASSIGNED Ransom to handle Mariner's rehabilitation). Mariner is an avatar for those of us who sabotage ourselves when good things start happening to us, because we're afraid of losing what we've worked for, or we don't believe that we deserve good things. You're right it could've been more obvious that she overheard it wrong, but then by being ambiguous it created the potential to make us FEEL what Mariner felt when she heard that, since many of us jumped right to, "That F'ing a'hole jock bully LIAR!" Like this feels like the payoff of positioning Ransom as the typical meat-headed jock schoolyard bully. We would not have thought the worst if the overheard line had come out of anyone else's mouth. I love, love, LOOOOOVE that this show is tackling this head on, and that it's showing it in an amazingly realistic way. How many of us went through childhood hearing that we were not as good as others until we believed it too? It wasn't until we lucked into that one adult who looked at us and said, "Hey you're pretty awesome, and I REFUSE to let you convince me or yourself otherwise!"? That's my take anyhow. As usual great video. 💙💕🤍

Not specifically related , but, Jessie... I'd love a full Jeffrey Combs Star Trek episode from you. Ranking, just chatting whatever, but he deserves a good hour of your excellent KZbin Star Trek creation. #please

Also note the episode title calls out to the Harlan Ellison short story, "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream." Many fandoms at work here!

As the previous episode has already established... You could Tuvix together a moopsy with a tribble. An exponentially multiplying moopsy! That can survive off of both grain *and* bones.

Gasp! Jessie missed a reference, something is wrong with the world. Moopsy is Em'lee from Farscape's Bone to Be Wild

Moopsie is a Pokemon, clearly. I didn't get the reference to "Tucker Tubes". I got the general gag, and I felt like I *should* have gotten the reference, but I didn't piece it together. "Misunderstandings due to people not just talking about things" is one of the worst tropes, to me. I understand that it's a "so the movie can happen" type of thing, but the solution just seems so obvious. Re: the warp engine lights: one of the tech breakdown channels recently did a video on the Steamrunner class, pointing out that there's a window right next to the bussard collectors. That guy probably wears a sleep mask.

It's no wonder they're shaking up the status quo and moving things forward in terms of character stories when they're adding T'Lyn to the mix. Would be very strange to keep the dynamics static while trying to add a new personality to the established cast, I wager this let them be more flexible with the writing. Glad I wasn't the only one to notice the lingering on the bunks. Ransom has always been more than he appeared and that really came to the forefront in this episode. I do like we're going to get some Boimler/Rutherford dynamics, so really now the most underdeveloped dynamic is Mariner/Rutherford.

Was that red screen of the same kind as Spock used on the Medusan?

One Easter egg I suggest is the episode title. "I Have No Bones, Yet I Must Flee" seems an obvious gloss on Harlan Ellison''s short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream." Considering Ellison's very public feud with Gene Roddenberry, this could hardly be a coincidence. 😏

Given that this was just an animated series, and we do not have any knowledge of the passage of time between events, I wonder if the ship that attacked the romulans, and the ship that attacked Klingons are in fact two different ships in a coordinated attack I would not be surprised if they were not being run by peanut hamper, badgy, and the rest of those characters in that prison.

What I want to know is how anyone in the prime timeline even knows about Mirror Archer enough to merchandise him, since he himself was ultimately a historical footnote in his own universe.

Boimler would have the entire historical footnote collection ;)

If they're going to keep doing stories where everyone assume Beckett did a bad thing but she didn't they are gonna have to change her name to Redd Herring. Also, I was driven absolutely INSANE by Boimler's thing. I find it impossible to believe he didn't think to just close the window shades or that there would be living quarters directly between two holodecks or that they wouldn't have sound-proofing (especially given what I learned from you about Gene Roddenberry's originals intentions there.)

I spent most of the episode trying to figure out the positive reading of the line Mariner heard Ransom say.

That Mariner has grown and will soon not need him actively shepherding her? Like... she just needed a push to get her going, but she's gonna be great from now on!

I shouldn't be pushing for a Tendiford (or D'Vanathan) but they so honestly cute together. I wonder if the writers have this in the long game for these two. I can be happy with a Pam and Jim slow burn.

I had to chew on this episode for a bit before I watched this episode and commented because I did not like the part about Mariner. I liked Ransom showing that he is actually a good officer. However, there were several parts throughout the series where Mariner would just rant about her time on other ships, and it gave me the distinct impression that she had a sort of PTSD/trust issue coming from all the rejection she experienced throughout her career. Also, a good aspect of her character is that she provided commentary about the flaws of the Federation, which some folks weren't too thrilled to hear - hence the rejection. So, while Mariner really did need Ransom to assure her that he believed in her, the end just felt like a cop-out. It felt like the series was doing a 180 and saying 'No, there's nothing wrong with the system! It's just fine! Mariner was just self-sabotaging all along and she needed the right man to come and show her the way!' In which, I was like 'fuck you.' Still, Jessie, you are incredibly insightful when it comes to pop culture. So, if that was never the sense that you got, then it's probably safe to say that this was just me reading too much into this.
