Really, you didn't like TNG or DS9? Voyager and Enterprise were well received too. Discovery is were things really went downhill. Lower Decks is fine, but I didn't want a Futurama style Star Trek comedy. It was only well received cause it wasn't as insulting as Discovery was to the real Star Trek fan. To see it get canceled, shows that the people running Star Trek now are in desperation mode and getting cancelled by the network cause of how poorly received all the new Star Trek has been getting. I guarantee you more people watch the older Star Trek shows on Paramount+ than they do watching the newer shows.

Lower Decks was literally the show that got me to finally watch Star Trek. I always had a feeling it was a show that I would enjoy but never really had the motivation to jump into a franchies with such a big back log and deep fan base. But after falling in love from episode 1 with Lower Decks, I was like "I KNOW there are references being made here, I want to understand it"... and so I ended up watching a large amount of Star Trek, from the original show through animated specials. I was actually really excited to see how perfectly referential (without feeling stale or repetitive) Lower Decks is.

I've been expressing concerns over the Star Trek franchise over the last couple of years. The cancellations of Discovery, Lower Decks, and Prodigy have only intensified those concerns. It's all of the things you said, and how they coincide with some other big franchises and how CERTAIN FANS are dragging down the franchises they say they love. As you said, Strange New Worlds is great in many many ways, but yes. I definitely noticed the crossover of certain Star Trek fans who HATED Discovery with all their heart and loved Strange New Worlds, and I'm pretty sure we both know one of the big reasons. I remember Ira Behr once saying that Star Trek fans aren't as progressive as they think they are, and right now, I am concerned that the franchise is headed in a direction that is going to look more like a franchise that celebrates itself and what it's already done instead of "boldly going" and trying new things. And to me, that absolutely IS a death knell. And I am very concerned. I'm tired of having to do fan campaigns, just to keep shows on with non-white leads. I'm tired of people who have learned NOTHING from DS9 and Voyager hell, even TNG, echoing the same sentiments over and over again. I'm tired, Jessie. I'm fucking tired.
@MsSissiePooh8 ай бұрын
I know… it’s so exhausting to attempt mount fan campaigns to keep shows with non-white lead characters on the air. One of the things that really bothers me is the perpetual complaints from certain fans about the diverse range of characters that are in Discovery and Lower Decks, and these particular fans are more than willing to remain stuck in Star Trek’s past - which is why they stubbornly refuse to learn nothing from TNG, DS9 and Voyager - and are extremely resistant to seeing Star Trek trying out new things and ideas. These fans prefer to see Trek “boldly go” where it’s gone so many times before that it’s not even funny (and then they complain about that, too). This whole fan campaign to save good shows with non-white leads is exhausting as I don’t know what… but if no one speaks up for these shows and the talented people - in front of and behind the camera - who work hard to bring us something amazing every week, then who will?
@CountScarlioni8 ай бұрын
I've been a fan of Star Trek since before Next Gen. I can tell you now that it helps to keep the perspective that Star Trek is an entertainment franchise in an intensely capitalistic industry over which fans never had any power, do not have power now, and will never gain power in the future. No fan should kid themselves it works any other way. Regardless of how much fans fawn or haters whine, no Star Trek will survive a day beyond the point its owners believe it to be financially viable. The politics or representations of a show either progressive or reactionary ultimately mean nothing to accountants holding the purse strings. What I would urge is to remember that most TV/streaming shows out there _never_ get anything like as many seasons as Lower Decks or Discovery. A lot of them these days are lucky to get through an entire first season without being declared a ratings failure or tax write off. Even TOS only got 3 seasons which now puts it in the bottom tier for Trek successes. Anyone who tries to say Discovery or Lower Decks have in any way failed is delusional. But to all things there is a time and no matter how good a show is, it can't survive the cut throat world of TV forever.

On pushing boundaries in Star Trek: I have had an idea for a crew that would push it in ways no other Star Trek crew thus far has: ethnically diverse, queer characters and non of the crew are American - as a non-American viewer, it always bugged me that a show about a united Earth without countries or borders still feels primarily American in the names of human characters and cultures like eating habits or even their way of sleeping (for instance, American bedsheets are different than German ones). And hey, us trekkies love minutiae so I didn’t do anything wrong by complaining about bedsheets. 😉 Would also be an interesting point for the state of Star Trek video. (Human culture feeling primarily American, not the bedsheets thing)
@CountScarlioni8 ай бұрын
Also as a non-American viewer, it has never bothered me in the slightest to have an American show primarily feature an American cast. If anything there's an odorous whiff of cultural imperialism to entertain the idea that a US TV series made in US production studios primarily for a US audience can take it upon itself to represent all peoples and cultures. Over the decades, Trek has already made that mistake before in some deeply cheesy and uncomfortable ways.

And What If from Marve is also very exciting and cool because they can do more experimental stuff in that series compared to most of the live action stuff ( and I gotta say most because of stuff like WandaVision, Eternals, and Werewolf by Night, which are all great )

While I recognize 5 seasons is pretty good for most shows nowadays, I can never shake the knowledge that it's just 50 episodes... or less than 2.5 seasons of the shows from the Star Trek era I grew up watching. Which, while certainly not unique to Lower Decks or even modern Star Trek in general, is just... so depressing. These writers have done amazing character work in such a relatively short span of episodes but I hope we can get more.

I NEVER thought running so many Trek series concurrently was going to last. Them keeping the series that has been most universally accepted among the fanbase isn't a surprise. Not only has Discovery been the most controversial among the fanbase but it launched in 2017. It's been seven years, whether it got seven seasons or not. The production of streaming series isn't the same as network. RIght now the longest running Netflix series, Grace and Frankie, is seven seasons. That's the LONGEST. Five seasons over seven years is pretty good.

Your praise got me into watching Lower Decks. I didn't think I would like it, but it was really fantastic. There are probably way too many other middle aged Trek fans that might have shrugged off Lower Decks like I did, which is a real loss for them and the series. I didn't really see any ads for it when it premiered or a new season dropped. Without your videos Jesse it would have just went into the memory hole. I also think Lower Decks is the best new Trek show, although the later seasons of Discovery have found their footing and are also really good. Thanks for being so passionate about this wonderful show. I'm afraid Star Trek will keep having a decline unless they get showrunners and writers that better understand the universe and that these aren't dark, gritty action shows in space. They are soap operas focused on social issues that occasionally has a little action and is set in space. Without the hope, the diversity, the addressing of modern social issues thinly veiled as alien issues, and showing audiences the best and worst of man's possible future while dealing with the shortcoming of the present age then it just isn't Star Trek.

They should bring it back in a few years as a short-lived live-action series that introduces two new characters played by other members of the cast, while a fan favorite is cut (but the actor gets to write an episode). Then - after a few more years - SIX movies. Including one with PANDAS.

The main reason that project has wheels is because Yeoh is now an academy award winner and a section 31 movie is the lowest hanging fruit to get her in front of the camera. The supposed “rehabilitation” Discovery implies at the end of its Section 31 plot is heavily implied to be Starfleet tucking them away like they do everything they’re ashamed of (also the corpses of captains they like) and evolving them into the even more clandestine and shadowy organization we see in DS9. As T'lyn said, "This crew is always weird and yelling." I intend to do very much of both of these about this because I love Lower Decks and it sucks that it's been cancelled. Also, a comment on SNW and its renewal; Paramount has seemed to want to make it the flagship Star Trek show since its inception, despite Discovery still being around (you could say SNW is the Voyager to Discovery's DS9). I honestly kinda wonder if this was a factor in the decision to cancel Discovery so abruptly, so they could focus more on SNW. But the thing with SNW is that it has a shelf life, it can only go so far until they're just redoing the Original Series. We know what happens to most of its characters, so a lot of the character stories it's telling, while are fun to see, we know how those end. It kinda kills the tension of the show when you think about just how much plot armor is being worn. Just makes me think how long before SNW is on the chopping block, because at this point, it won't surprise me when we get an unceremonious announcement that SNW's fifth season will be it's last. But with SNW, as I said, it can only go on so long, whereas Lower Decks absolutely has the potential for more.

There was so many people cheering and clapping for when Discovery was cancelled, I was just disgusted. Even if I didn’t like a show and there have been a couple of Star Trek shows I didn’t like but I would never celebrate its cancellation. Then when Lower Decks cancellation was announced not long after I see a KZbin video about LD saying “Go Woke Go Broke”. Star Trek is suppose to celebrate diversity but you have these gatekeepers saying DISCO and LD, mostly DISCO not being Trek and go in the comments saying words like woke, diversity, and political like they are bad words and Star Trek isn’t about this. Star Trek has always been about diversity and has been political. Even SNW was taking some heat in when the cast has more female than male cast members. I love all of the new Trek Shows. While they have ties to the past they’re also doing there own thing and I love that. If people wanted to watch the same old ST formula go watch old ST Shows. Paticularly those with Black, POC or Queer characters in them. So I'm willing to help and write letters.

Unfortunately, I think this is were the question of how profitable streaming services really are comes into play. Lower Decks deserves as many seasons as Bob's Burgers will have and a live action movie. I want to see Boimler make Captain! I hope Cartoon Network will pick it up. If streaming isn't profitable enough to give shows the runs they deserve, then let's all just go back to cable.

part of me worries about lower decks going flat. it's by far the best official trek put out this century, but could it keep it up? I really wish they'd just open up the IP to fanfics again. New Voyages was as good as SNW, at a tiny fraction of the budget; how many great shows could we have had if you could just make independent star trek without fear of prosecution?

Lower Decks is my 4th favorite Star Trek series too. I have been hearing that a lot lately.

It equally saddening and frustrating that Star Trek is not allowed to speak on the modern narrative for the "comfort" of nostalgia. (Predominately WASP-y conservative types.) I agree that we need to think more physical media amid all the other ways we can make Star Trek viable to the studio and their shareholders. (An uncomfortable reality the at the SAG-AFTRA strike highlighted: the fiscal bottom line and avarice of the affluent.)

What you say about animated shows is why I think Doctor Who needs an animated series, I feel a Time Lord Academy or a Dalek show would be great with animation. I think Doctor Who needs an episode where they go to an animated dimension. Also a land of fiction, like Big Finish did with the War Master.

If I ran it I'd have cancelled SNW, renewed Lower Decks for 7 seasons, Discovery I think could naturally end in season 5, then I'd make the new Academy show be in the 24th century not the 30th! I'd then set Star Trek Legacy and Star Trek Janeway (Live Action) in motion!!!

Disco deserves 7 seasons. Lower Decks deserves infinite seasons. It’s time for Trek to stay. Be bold. Not break under the ubiquitous franchise fatigue.

For myself, Lower Decks is the best Star Trek series since Enterprise, really hope the team finds a new home for it.

I'd be interested to see if the creators of Lower Decks are able to make season five feel like a satisfying conclusion for the characters, but I also definitely don't wanna truly say goodbye to them.

Always sucks having a series you like cancelled before it can get a good ending. I'm just glad Final Space is getting an ending even if it's in a graphic novel and not a season 4. Though admittedly, having a series stretch on and on and on long after it SHOULD have ended can also be painful. Part of why I don't tend to get into comic books is that they don't end. They just go on and on and then get rebooted and go on and on and as years stretch on the more likely they're going to pull some stunt and ruin a character I like or something. So even though I love super heroes I don't really read comics much unless it's a self contained story like Watchmen or something and not something like keeps going potentially forever. And I mostly stick to movies and cartoons.

Good news about the second born twin of Lower Decks called Final Space. That show definitely had it's problems but I liked its unabashed weirdness.

Ngl, they announced the cancelation, and I gained an inner Zøg honk. We gotta save this show.

I love lower decks but I also feel that there is a symmetry of each of the new shows lasting only 5 years each. As the Enterprises original mission was 5 years. So my hope would be that each series lasts a full 5 years and then we get 5 stand-alone films.

First: Yes, save Lower Decks! More and more of my favourite current Star Trek! But... Would love an examination of the new economic model for tv shows in the streaming era. Seven seasons was financially important for syndication, right? Would be interested to see a consideration of what the new situation is going to encourage. Maybe 5 seasons is to be expected? Much love to your fandom of Lower Decks. Your channel is the place I go get that hit of post-episode glee.

This is concerning. I feel like our entire society is being intimidated into "playing it safe" recently, and "playing it safe" leads to stagnancy and death. I know a television show getting canceled isn't the end of the world as we know it, but it reflects a larger pattern that I find distressing, which is the crack down on spaces that used to fly under the radar of powerful people. Something like Star Trek was dismissed as "just for nerds" and animated shows were "just for kids," which allowed people involved in those things a certain kind of freedom to deviate from the status quo. But it seems like, more and more, these outlets for creativity, exploration, and even conflict are being shut down or coopted by people with power. I don't like it.
