Perhaps the planned phaser strips weren't installed yet because it may have initially been a late Dominion War era mothballed ship. The Defiant didn't initially have any phaser strips and only had the pulse phaser cannons. O'Brien's engineering team added the strips at a later time.

1. Great Episode! 2. No, I love the yeagar. My headcanon is the yeagar herself was a testbed for a tactical variant of the Intrepid. They used a scaled up reaider for the secondary hull as it allowed them to test the concept before commiting the resuorces/design into a fully new dedicated secondary hull. When the test was successful, the design was approved for further development, while the Yeagar herself was rushed into service as Starfleet needed every working tactical vessel it could get, with her being refit to the new Mk.1 sec9ndary hull sometime after the Dominion War.

I think their point with the Yeagar is that all the elements of the secondary hull shouldn't have been scaled up, hatches, windows etc.

true, but that kinda fits my theory, it was supposed to fly a few tests and thats it so why bother. only then Starfleet threw it into service and her crew undoubtedly cursed the shipywars thousands of times during the war @@andycooper6085

Wondering if it isn't an Raven replasment for small teams like the raven and oberth ships that is also available to non starfleet personnel that's why it's lightly armed but a lot tougher hull design so it can get out of trouble insted of been blown up

I wonder if by combining the ruggedness of steamrunner at a Sabre size (maybe using Sabre nacelles), with a pulse phaser armament whether this was meant to be a Defiant stand in. Manoeuvrable with forward focussed punch of the defiant but that was rugged and certainly easier to maintain.

I want to say those box\grills ahead of the bridge are something that is on...Voyager? Or maybe the Nova? I read "high powered sensors" from them. I agree that Sabrerunner ought to have 4x Pulse Phasers & 2 Forward Torpedo banks! I believe the phaser fire in the episode comes from the dorsal, so we can say she's got a regular phaser bank down there, in the all around style like on the D. That seems potent enough, especially for a small ship. I could see it as a replacement for the Sabre class during the Dominion War, a ship with higher firepower and a new space frame. As for why it's form is so similar to the Steamrunner, I am going to chalk that one up to "we needed a new ship type, fast", where the design team could use the math from the Steamrunner development to create a scaled down version of the same space frame.

So, are we going to get a Saber - Sabrerunner comparision next? ;) I wonder how those nacelles match up in length and design to the Saber. I did not realize that the warp grilles were actually aft only on the ILM model. That's neat. It's possible that this was an attempt to make a "better" escort than the Defiant (well, better as in able to do missions well other than combat)... If it's Saber scale, then it'd be roughly double the length of the Defiant, which could add some space for science labs or the like.

It just crossed my mind that this might be reasonable to compare to the Franklin in terms of general size. Though I am quite curious how it would compare to the Nova Class or the Defiant Class too. The bigger a ship is the more General role it can be as the more "stuff" it can carry around where as conversely the more you shrink one down the less well suited it is and this is actually smaller than the NX-01 isn't it & that had some limiations. That said it's said it's way more versatile than a Warp Delta I'd bet. I kinda wish they'd put the pod back where it was pointing upwards not downwards so the ship looked more suited to landing on a planet than it is... as if it can do it, it's going to require so very long legs or the pod has to move.

My guess would be as it is Star Trek Lower Decks a Tactical Transport Small Support Ship for C-17/C-130 type size cargo ie anything that can fit into the Shuttle bays or cargo bays and personnel transport with good enough weapons and such if the ship runs into trouble or as to support a fleet maby on both class's the underside has more transporters for heavy cargo maby in a Alternate 2381 Mariner is in Command of a Steamrunner or a Saberunner Class

Looking at these different models is like looking at the same model of car from different years. It's ok to have differences they are all the same type of car so why not do that with these starships?

I think with this one, I can kind of understand the downscale-the-shape thing I often find annoying. (Probably more annoying to upscale things in ways they don' make sense. In this sense a tankey design with the sheltered nacelles style/angled features kinda can make sense at a few sizes, you could see like a cutter-sized torpedo ship or a defense frigate looking like much the same layout.
