Lower Decks convinced me to get into Star Trek. I've started with Deep Space Nine because a friend told me it was the best series to start with. I've been enjoying it and just finished the first season two.

Star Trek Series' don't usually hit their stride until the 3rd season. DS9 with the Dominion, TNG with the Borg, etc.

I dunno if I'd have said ds9 is best to START with. It is, to my thinking, probably the best Star Trek series there is but it really sets the bar high. TNG would have been a better starter Trek imo just because it better captures the ideals and overarching themes of the franchise. All that said, you're in or a real treasure of a media series and I deeply hope you enjoy it!

TNG would have been a better start. For new comers, it's a good and solid introduction to a new era of peace and exploration. It world builds quite well, showing you the political landscape of the Galaxy and then the looming dangers that lurk in the depths of space. It also does a good job of showing you this utopia that has been built and how the Federation pays a very high price for it's continued complacency in times of peace, even going so far as to agree to treaties that effectively hurt the Federation should hostilities ever break out. DS9 then takes everything you know about the Federation and shows you just how hard it is to maintain that way of life outside of Federation space and how many sacrifices need to be made to protect that utopia and that sometimes, you have to do morally questionable things in the face of certain annihilation. As a certain Captain once said, "It's easy to be a saint in paradise".

I didn’t get to watch ds9 back then since I was a kid who barely understood anything at all at the time but I do vaguely remember hearing their theme song once or twice. Wasn’t until when I was in high school that I saw their Reruns that I realized where the song was from. Now every time I hear this song I feel like I’m back in the 1990s. God I miss those times

Do you think they knew the emotional reaction this would provoke from people, would be that tearful? For me it was hard work, as in the uk, we would get like one video cassette released a month to watch 2 episodes with. Same with the Next Generation, when season cliff hangers meant you had to wait months and months to see it resolved and then wait for the cassette to be released ontop of that. Those were good times man!

I figure a starship can kind of "park" while still at warp. Still in subspace but not really "moving" its exit point in normal space. So the ship navigated automatically to a safe exit point at the destination and awaited command from the helm officer to return to normal space.

They slow to a very low warp factor when nearing their destination, while remaining FTL, because space is YUUUUGE, man. Also it's TV and TV needs drama.
