Physical models look way more natural and realistic, my best experience and example I know was watching the external scenes of the Ranger from Interstellar on Imax. On the other hand, many special effects are easier and even feasible when using CGI (if well done). I would combine the best of both worlds - pun intended. 🙃

Then why didn't they? Are VFX really cheaper these days? For me the VFX (especially the Titan) were very hit and miss. Too much blur and fog to hide the flaws of the models. I miss the clean crisp starship effects.

So very true! Sorry I am late to the party and missed this until now for some strange reason. With all the others out there of such wonderful modeling work by so many, this 1701-D is truly the cream of the crop, from the LCARS control console to the warp flash effect which I don’t believe anyone else has ever done although I had dreamed of doing it with the availability of LEDs and programmable boards now I knew someone would, like the phaser rings others have done, but this video is 2 years old so perhaps you were the first to try it? Bravo sir!

WOW! WOW! WOW! I have no idea what this channel is, who made this, and quite what I'm looking at here. But this is INCREDIBLE! The 6 foot Enterprise D was always SO MUCH BETTER than the 4 foot, not just in terms of detail and realism, but in terms of how much more beautiful it is! Sadly, there were only a limited number of shots of the 6 foot filmed for the show, and they all feel quite familiar now. So it's mind blowing to see brand new shots, from new angles! Some of these shots are good enough to actually be inserted into the show! 4:18 is stunning. For years, I've been thinking the TNG episodes could someday benefit from being re-edited with new model shots added, but I knew that would involve using a VERY good CGI model, better than anything we've seen on screen to date. But now we have an actual model, and this looks better than ever! It even has features which make it superior to the original! My only (very minor) criticism is that the Ten Forward windows haven't been corrected, like they did with the re-paint for Generations. That is such a minor point though! Well done guys!

I love the ambient lighting shots where most of the illumination on the ship comes from the nacelles and bussard collectors, that’s a far more realistic way of how it would look in deep space, as opposed to the studio floodlighting they used in the series, in deep space away from stars, the ship would not have the ‘dramatic’ lighting from the show.

Saw the details in the conference room, did you do the arboretum as well? Thanks for sharing this outstanding work!

@GeneralMatoq 4 ай бұрын
Hi and thank you very much!! This is actually a 6ft model. I tried to make a motorized shuttle door,but the space on that part of the ship is just too small. And i did not do the aboretum but the full lighted bridge, even though you never will see it again because the saucer is sooo big...HAHA... if you like it, take a look at the 1/650 Version in a other video of my channel. I also offer that at the moment as a kit together with aztek decals and the lighting kit.

it's beautiful, though help me out here, the odyssey deflector looks different to this (check the battle with the jem hadar in DS9) and indeed the later enterprise shots from studio model 3foot or 4 foot cant remember. I just can't see why they are different. EDIT: Just took a closer look, seems as if the odyssey (four foot model) deflector is pushed further forward, The bottom of the dish seems exactly level with the bottom of the hull and not much over hang on the dish from the hull above it, in the odyssey battle they do one pass before the attack

There is one important component that only the Enterprise A and D share: They are both masterpieces of modern art, both with that sense of inspiration. While all the Star Trek ships, for the most part, are artistic, whether models of CGI, the Enterprise A and D don't feel like they're rehashing something. Frankly, the Excelsior shares this "inspiration" idea even while the Enterprise B lost it. They're all beautiful. Please don't misunderstand, but the A, D and Excelsior have that "Je ne sais pas" feel. Thankfully, with the recent releases of the new versions of the models and KZbin videos, such as this one, we can see these two masterpieces of modern art as they are meant to be seen: as ships and as art.
@GeneralMatoq

Your stuff is really amazing! I'm guessing that the major critique you get is, "That's not a physical model, it's CGI." I'd love to play with this! This with a 8 or 16mm motion picture camera (Krasnogorsk 2-3, Arriflex 16 etc) or even a good 8mm camera, with a decent lighting setup could do wonders. You don't have to have a film camera, but they are the best for this sort of stuff. A digital alternative would be the Canon EOS M with the hacked firmware, which produces 35mm like video. It would save a lot of render time to have a miniature model. I don't want to ask the price though lol
