The refit Enterprise NCC-1701 is in my opinion the most sleek and striking form of the ship. I love how those big angled warp nacelles sweep back. When the ship passes by it looks like speed...
@jtkirkfan200217 жыл бұрын
That was good. I especially liked where you had Enterprise rescuing an original Constitution Class vessel. One of the bugs I had with the movie was no visual continuity with the series until the DE when Foundation Imaging inserted a TOS shuttlecraft into the tram station.

I so much remember waiting for this series. James Doohan went on a speaking tour in 1977, and one of his stops was my home town, just 10 days before shooting was to begin on the first episode, "In Thy Image", which is my preferred name for the first movie. Come April 1978, I wondered where the show was, since I hadn't heard about the change of plans.

you are correct! the early 80s had a lot of fan-ideas and manuals being written and this is a very familiar old piece of info from what i can tell - that the refit class was, at the very least, "nicknamed" Enterprise class.

Also, it should be noted that Sets were built, costumes made or in the process of being made (James Cawley has purchased a majority of the costumes in various stages of completion for use in his Phase II endeavour) and that the show was about 2 to 3 weeks from Principal Photography when it was decided to make a film. There is even test footage in the Engine Room set. Most of the sets were reworked for TMP, and in Trek 2, the Engine itself became the Girders of the Regula 1 lab Balcony.

I remember the news report that the Star Trek series was going back into production. I was about 10 at the time. I am 42 now, but I remember that little blurp on the news one night. Kept waiting for it come on myself. Next thing I know I started hearing more and more about a movie. Too bad that could not keep the Enterprise closer to the original. The Phase II Enterprise still had that 'Naval' ship look to it, that it had in the TOS.

This really brings it to life ... would love to see you "recreate" Phase II opening credits! One thought: don't know how much you were hewing to the preproduction art, but the painting you have here from Starlog has the NCC-1701 ship's registry on the underside of the saucer in one big sweeping arc toward the front, similar to the TMP markings.

A hearty thums up to this:-). I wish this clip had been longer. This was very well made and does show a realistic cross between the original Constitution class Enterprise and the refitted version. IMHO, the "J.J. Abrams" enterprise was a very sad version as was the movie, although the special effects were good. Even the engineering section looked more like a textile mill's boiler room compared to the engineering section shown in ST the movie and Wrath of Khan.

There's a wonderful book out called "Star Trek Phase II", that discusses the aborted TV show. In it there are wonderful pieces of concept art, as well as pictures of the original miniature under construction. (Some of those pics are included in this video.) There are also Matt Jefferies' own plans for this model available online. So yep, this was indeed the design that was planned for the 1978 TV show.

The ship you're talking about was a concept model for a movie that was to be entitled "Star Trek: Planet of the Titans that would have been release around 75 or 76 before Star Wars. Ralph McQuarie designed that ship. He also designed the Star Destroyers. It was scrapped since it took Trek in a dead end direction. Phase II came later and did indeed have sets built and most of the casting done. It's all explained in the ST:TMP DVD.

@Sulaco516 Technically you are both correct. Gene was actually planning on using the McQuarrie design initially, but switched over to the design above as it was more recognizable as the Enterprise. Roddenberry actually went so far as to have a Scale Model of the McQuarrie design constructed, but it's on-screen debut was made nearly 20 years later, as a victim of the Battle of Wolf 359. However, iirc, a "painting" of it can be seen along with the Ring-Drive Ent. in the Movie.

@ProjectFlashlight612 Actually, this render is spot on for the upgraded Jeffries design. Quite a few differences. The pylons, the length of the warp nacelles, the configuration of the dorsal torpedo launcher, a simpler bridge dome, simpler deflector grid pattern, the navigation dome would have looked exactly like the TOS version. There's a diagram of it in one of the "Ships of the Starfleet" books from Mastercom Data Center. I'm fairly certain they named it the Endeavor Class for giggles.
@jtkirkfan200214 жыл бұрын
@Xurcan In the ST universe, it stands for "Naval Contact Code". In the real universe, Matt Jeffries, who was a civilain pilot, added an extra "C" to the "NC" which always proceeded the registration number for civilian aircraft.
@Xurcan14 жыл бұрын
@CATTOBAR Close.. but if you look all star ships have NCC on them not just the Constitution class... It actually stands for Naval Construction Contract . . . NCC 1701. the number designation is the plan or contract to build number of the ship.

Only FASA referred to the refit as the Enterprise class, and even then if you read the actual Starfleet Recognition Manual is clear it is still a Constitution class vessel. The Enterprise was just the test ship for the refits and it was thus referred to as the Enterprise Refit. The movie era Enterprise and Enterprise A are Constitution Class vessels, Enterprise refits.

phase ii was more than just a concept, as sets had been constructed, stories for the entire first season scripted (some of which were recycled later, e.g. tng's "the child"), even a model of the enterprise had been halfway built - it was work in progress. the drawing of the ship with a bowed out "deflector" is from 1964 and was a design study (crayon on black cardboard, if i'm not mistaken). sorry, but you're still wrong.

@Roadracer987654321 That's because Matt Jeffries himself designed the upgraded Phease II Enterprise, if I recall correctly. The Jeffries redesign is a far more logical "upgrade" or "refit" as it would not have required them to totally redesign the spaceframe of the aging starship.

@originalgrimbear Actually, it IS the Phase II Enterprise (which was the basis for the Enterprise for movies 1 thru 6) that was designed by Walter Matthew Jefferies in the video that was rendered in LightWave. You're talking about the rejected Ralph McQuarrie design with the triangular hull.

This design is soon to (finally) appear on screen. Fan production, ST New Voyages is changing its name to "Phase II". actually, it was 13 stories. and the model was built using bluebrints and paintings, they didn't just make it up while they were building it. the cgi ship in this video is based one those same blueprints and paintings, so it shows quite acurately what the phase ii enterprise would have looked like. and the paintings do have the dish. graphics of the phase ii model were even used as computer readouts in the first three movies...

When Lenard Nimoy said he wasn't coming back as Spock, Roddenburry came up with a total Vulcan youth character named Xon who was suppose to be looking for an emotional side, eventually becoming more human as the show progressed. In ST: TNG, Data the android became what Xon was suppose to be.
