This Star Trek story was an expansion on ideas from an episode from the original series called THE CHANGELING. Before you watch the next Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan, you might want to watch the original series episode SPACE SEED because Wrath is the conclusion of that original story.

Given how much you dug the Adam West Batman, I bet 50 tribbles you'd *really* enjoy the campy esthetics of the original Trek show. Lots of folk don't like the cheap (even for the time) FX and sets. I think it adds incredible charm to the (sometimes) superb writing of the OG Trek.

Watch the Original Series episode 'Space Seed' before watching Star Trek 2. It's not absolutely necessary, but it is a nice back story to the movie, and much of the audience back in the day had seen that episode before the movie so they knew who Khan was going in.

The Enterprise never looked better (never mind all that cgi shit in later movies). The cast is also still young and trim enough to pull off a reprise of their roles and the whole thing is treated really seriously. Yes it is slow. It also has (imo) the only realistic Klingons in all of the later Star Trek (these guys look and act like they are a professional ships' crew instead of the drunken morons we get in the later movies and in all the tv series). Also, I love the Star fleet uniforms in this too unlike the redone uniforms in Star Trek II onwards (with their ridiclous banana republice level of badges and belt buckles)

The movies never get this epic again. Closer to 2001 (Trumbull worked on 2001) in style and pacing. "mystery wonder beauty sexy" ...subsequent films have more pep but lack those qualities...and budget. I'll be getting the bluray of this one when it comes out this month. Gorgeous on large displays. Robert Wise: Sound of Music, Day the Esrth Stood Still, West Side Story, The Haunting, Andromeda Strain...none of the other movies got directors of this caliber. I think the movie was slowly re-evaluated in more recent years. Its style of cinematography is really unique. Let alone the truly legendary music score. And I cannot pick another movie with the same sense of exploration, of venture into the unknown like this. For me, it wasn’t the slow pacing, it was originally (also saw it in theater), it looked unfinished. I now know why, because it was unfinished. Robert Wise wanted more time to tighten up the film and finish the special effects. It originally looked muddy and the slow pacing was amplified due to a poor edit. Paramount demanded its release on a certain date which is why the theatrical release looked like a rough cut (imo). But I am singing the praises of this new cut. It is MAGNIFICENT.

I actually liked the slow moving scenes. I know it's weird saying this knowing that Wrath of Khan is my favorite Star Trek movie of all time, and that one is anything but slow. But The Motion Picture was going more for a classic Star Trek feel, with a little bit of inspiration from 2001 A Space Odyssey thrown into the mix. The resolution really felt like it could've been an episode of ToS, just with a bigger budget. I liked that aspect.

I loved it when you said William Shatner looked so young. One of the recurring themes of the movies is that Kirk is dealing with a mid-life crisis; he has to contend with losing his youth, aging gracefully, and coming to terms with the legacy he is eventually going to leave behind for the next generation. But your comment reaffirms that Kirk still has so much ahead of him, and a man like him needs to rise up and face it rather than wallow in self pity. Like what Shatner himself has done like a boss.

I strongly second the recommendation. Space Seed, while a good episode, is not one of the really extraordinary episodes of the original series, but it should be seen before the second movie, because that movie was made specifically for an audience familiar with that episode. Count me among the fans of this movie, especially the director's edition. BTW the first theme you hummed IS the original Star Trek theme, from the original 1960s TV show. When The Next Generation premiered in the 1980s, they adopted Goldsmith's march from this film as the TV theme. Wrath of Khan IS a better film in many ways, but I love the cold, 2001-esque quality and visuals (done by Douglas Trumbull, who DID work on the 2001 FX!) of this film. And Goldsmith's score is one of my all-time favorites. I recommend watching the Space Seed episode of the original series before watching Khan for a richer experience. This was originally written as a pilot episode for a TV series reboot. At the end, the Ilea probe would join the crew as a robotic crew member struggling to recapture her humanity. Her character would later be split between Cmdr. Data and Counselor Trio and Will Decker became Will Riker on Star Trek the Next Generation. The original concept for the series was that Capt. Kirk would be on board as an elder statesman guiding the young Captain Decker who would take on the action and beam down to the planets. Part of this concept finds it way to Star Trek the Next Generation with the early dynamic between Captain Picard and his First Officer.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this film! There is no other Star Trek movie like it. It's a one-of-a-kind. It's wild that, despite you watching this film for the first time in 2022, you definitely "got" what Gene Roddenberry and Robert Wise were trying to do back in 1979 with creating a slow-simmering mystery and a sense of humanistic exploration and discovery. So many people missed that point, so for them the fact that this movie is slow-paced is a very bad thing indeed. But when you're actually looking at it, there's so much to see and think about that it's almost impossible to keep up with. The dual focus shots are because Roddenberry insisted that the bridge set have real working television screens displaying data. These are difficult to have show up under normal studio lighting. Therefore, very low level lighting was used requiring a much larger aperture in the camera lens which in turn limited the focal length. A unique solution was a custom lens that had the dual focus capability.

If (and when) you are going to watch any Star Trek series, it is a must to start with Star Trek, The Original Series! (1966 - 1969) Don't let the age of the original series fool you. Since it originally aired in the late 60's, it has been re-vamped, re-recorded in stereo and had the visual effects re-imagined in CGI! The original series is the inspiration for what is now known as the most successful franchise in television history! Don't cheat yourself by setteling for second best! The original series is where it all started. Star Trek - The Motion Picture is a reunion movie featuring the cast of Star Trek - The Original Series!
@trekkiejunk2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! But some of what you said is misleading. The original theme WAS recorded in stereo. The DVD release from about 15 years ago had every episode in 5.1 surround sound, with the theme in stereo. When they did the “remaster” for BluRay, they updated the audio a little, but the only thing they re-recorded was the theme song, for 5.1, and new clarity. As far as the CGI…I personally hate them? Most of those CGI shots look worse than the Phantom Menace, and are distracting. I always watch the remastered original versions of the episodes. Maybe someday they can re-do those effects with better technology and make it work a lot better.
@johnandrews31512 жыл бұрын
@@trekkiejunk When the original series debuted in 1966, there were no stereo tv's or stereo tv broadcast stations, therefore, none of the episodes were made in stereo. In the late 70's, the soundtrack was re-recorded in stereo, not 5.1 because 5.1 had not yet been invented at that time so it was recorded in stereo for those tv stations who had made the transition to stereo broadcasts and for cable as well as for VHS since there were no DVD's at that time. This feature helped Paramount sell the crap out of the Star Trek VHS series. I don't know when you were born but I am an original Trekkie and was there for the premier episode in 1966 at the age of nine. I have seen, first hand, the progression of technology since the first airing of Star Trek, which was even before the advent of VHS technology. None of the original episodes were recorded in stereo. Dig deeper into the research. As far as the CGI effects are concerned, it is a matter of taste. But as bad as you may consider the CGI effects to be, they are still much better than the original effects which were only as good as the technol;ogy and the budget alotted to them at the time would allow. Also, The DVD version you referrence was the second time the soundtrack was re-recorded for the first time in 5.1 using the original sheet music and they even hired a saprano fot the vocal. They pulled out all of the stopps and even used the original negatives and used every computer program available at the time to get the best and brightest visuals from the original negatives. Much effort went into this re-vamping, making the 50th anniversary DVD package the best version of the original series to date in spite of it's critics' opinions.

I despise the revamped special edition. It just doesn’t work going from 1966 cinematography on the bridge and cutting to Star Wars outside. The original special effects should have stayed period. You alter classics like say the original 1933 King Kong just because you have the technology to change the effects to CGI. It kinda insults the audience because it’s old. The budget is immaterial when the story is gripping like Doomsday Machine. I urge people watch the original cuts of Star Trek instead and marvel at the 1960’s artisans who made that epic for yeah, $19.95.

@@motherlandone6300 I do not disagree with you on this point, however, the reason that the special effects were the way they were is simply because their budget was so meger. After the original 3 season series was cancelled in early 1969, the movie you watched here was made mainly because of the success of the original 1977 Star Wars movie. Also because of the enormous success of the original Star Trek series reruns (that seemed to always be on TV) and the BIG Star Trek conventions that operated thru the '70s. All that and the following Star Trek movie successes thru the early 80s, a new and really well made TV series started in 1987 "Star Trek: The Next Generation" which ran 7 seasons. You should do that one someday! @ 1:33 I recommend before watching any more ST movies, start with the original TV series as they were released instead of all the newer Trek things first. To avoid several spoilers. It's okay that you've watched this movie first because there's not much a spoiler issue, but IMO (and I've been a fan since '66 at age 11 and seen it all) you should do the original series next before any more movies. Just watch them for fun on your own without hassling with making videos on it. Or consider making the original series videos. I've seen a couple of reactors doing it. Do the original '60s series just to see where it all stared and why it's still so very popular and loved. Then work up to the newer shows. One caveat to note about the original series!! Do NOT watch the original _unaired_ pilot called "The Cage" but watch the original series as the episodes were released to avoid a major spoiler! It's safe to watch the pilot after doing the series because it was actually incorporated into the only 2-part episode that is one of the most fan favorite episodes of the original series. If you decide on doing ST:TOS know that you can choose between the original 1966 video, or a newer redux version recently made that has a lot of modern CGI added. I've seen the CGI version and it's impressive, but I still prefer the quaint, low budget, but beautiful special effects of the original. One other thing about doing Star Trek beginning to present day productions is you'll get to see the improvements in stories, special effects and production techniques with each series and movies. There's a whole LOT to cover in the world of Star Trek. ST has been so loved that there are a good number of fan-based productions. One was a well funded fan-production series that guest starred several actors from some of the TV series. That fan-show have done the last two missing years of Roddenberry's so-called "A 5 year mission" stated at the beginning of each episode suggesting Roddenberry wanted to have a 5 season show back in 1966, but got only 3. ✌😎

That's a lot, though. He should watch maybe 5 episodes of TOS. That's more than enough to get a good idea how that series went. Watch maybe two episodes of TNG. Two of DS9. None of Voyager. One of Enterprise and skip the woke crap altogether.

Glad you enjoyed it, I think you captured the excitement we had in 1979 when we first watched it. To some, it may seem boring and slow compared to some of today's movies. But you have to imagine Trek fans only had TOS re-runs (and that cartoon That Shall Not Be Named) for around 15 years since the show was canceled. Then finally we get a brand new Trek movie with all our favorite characters. Most fans were ecstatic and just happy to be watching new Trek. I have to admit some of the viewscreen (and Sulu staring into the screen) could have been shortened. Enterprise 1701-A best looking ship IMHO. I love the music and the opening Klingon sequence. By the way, you can like both Star Wars and Star Trek, I know I do :D

Aw, the cartoon was fun. Very stiff, but fun. But yes, after years of restrictive budgets, Trek finally got to tell a story with the proper scope with The Motion Picture. And then the sequels were allowed to break loose of the Original Series formula and have fun, since they no longer had to sell the idea of a 1960s TV show working on the silver screen.

@@MAMoreno I'm a die hard Trek fan but I could only stand one episode of the cartoon. I rarely (if ever) enjoy antimated versions of my favorite shows and or movies. The newer animated Treks are pretty good. Star Trek Strange New Worlds has been the best thing to come out of Trek in a long time in my opinion. As someone who watched TOS as a child in the 60’s, I have been loving seeing Pike, Spock the gang being brought to life. Would I’ve to see 5-7 seasons of Pike and then a transition to Kirk and Spock and a TV reboot of TOS. All new episodes, no need to redo the originals.

A piece for you to ponder... Regarding the Slow Pacing of the Enterprise reveal scene... This movie came out in 1979 - 10 years after "Star Trek The Original Series" (TOS) TV series was cancelled. So many of us learned about TOS from nearly a decade of re-runs. So when The Motion Picture (TMP) came out we, the fans, were recognized by giving us a reveal of the Enterprise's new look. Yes, it's long, but it's a love letter to so many fans who helped keep the dream of the series alive. The fans wrote letters to the TV Network after the second season of TOS to plead for TOS not to be cancelled.. and it worked! These same fans wrote to NASA to get the first space shuttle renamed to Enterprise... and the scene where all the crew are watching the scene of the space station being digitized - so many of these people were fans of TOS, including Bjo Trimble. (She's a whole article all about herself!) And that theme for the reveal wasn't the theme for TMP, THAT is the Enterprise's theme - because she is another member of the crew, even though she's not sentient. And as was said, that theme became so synonymous with "Star Trek" that they re-used it for Star Trek The Next Generation in 1987. (*Smile*) Welcome to the universe! And please, research the Vulcan idea of "IDIC".

The film was rushed to make a release date. It IS a slow film. A new 4K version of the Director's Edition is finally being released this month, which incorporated fixes to bad scenes in the theatrical release (the awful matte painting of the saucer section showing the crew exiting the ship) and dynamic creation of the steppingstones that formed in front of the ship leading to V'ger). Many other qualitative improvements to color and image were made. Previously, the Director's Edition was available only in DVD resolution. It still IS a slow film, but it now looks great. When you get to Star Trek II, you'll notice a big difference. Not slow and ponderous. Great film.

Ollie…I was 13 when I saw this on its premier showing. While by most it’s not considered one of the better movies, to me it is one of the best. It was the first and probably only time the Enterprise didn’t feel like a Hollywood set on a soundstage. The sets, cinematography, and scope made her look as if she was a real ship. The model effects of the Enterprise and Klingon ships was beautiful. Now what I enjoy about watching someone watch it for the first time like you is the joy and excitement you feel and show while watching it. It’s like watching myself 43 years ago….wow, was it that long ago? Seems like yesterday. What struck me funny was you saying that this was the youngest you had ever seen William Shatner. If you haven’t, I strongly encourage you to go back and watch the original series. You need to see the source material! Hope you will watch it and do reviews for us to watch!

The slow pacing of this movie was intentional as not to make it seem to be trying to copy Star Wars that came out two years before this.It also was making a statement that Star Trek was totally different and was created before Star Wars and was made to be for the fans of the original TV show.

Man, the first time we saw that Constitution-class refit design after 10 years of no Star Trek was awe-inspiring. This is for sure the best Enterprise design of all time, I love the 2270's Starfleet ship aesthetic. That was also the reason for the long flyby in Spacedock and the long exterior shots: fans hadn't seen this ship in a decade and the producers wanted to show off their badass new design, it really meant a lot. Gene Roddenberry also half-jokingly speculated that the planet V'ger encountered with the 'living machines' was the Borg homeworld, all the way in the Delta Quadrant, and that they upgraded it to fulfill it's mission. As to the standoff between Trek and SW fans... they're not really comparable. Star Wars is a fantasy space opera, and Star Trek is hard science fiction. The two genres are very different.

It warms my heart to see the younger generation get excited about Star Trek. I'm 66 years old and have loved Star Trek since I first saw the first airing of the Original Series (STTOS) on Sept 1966 at the age of 10. I was trilled every week during the regular season for 3 years and then it came to an end. I was devastated. That was the one show my parents would let my brother and I watch on the TV. You really need to watch The Original Series before going forth with the other Star Trek movies. I have loved them all and have them on DVD or Blue Ray. I have all the other Star Trek Series too, The Original Series, The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. I swore I would never get Paramount but after two years of not having the streaming service, I decided to get it. You can see all the Star Trek you can imagine on it. I love it. For a true Star Trek fan, it is like heaven on earth. lol Live Long and Prosper I'm also a huge Star Wars Fan.

Nice - you get it. In the late '70s, a Trek film could have easily been campy like the series or _Flash Gordon._ Instead, _TMP_ is grand opera & gothic, deceptively existential psychological horror for grown ups in the grounded sci-fi of _2001_ and spirit of _Vertigo_ (Goldsmith even nods to Bernard Herrmann's score). And it's what starship exploration would be like in reality: everything goes wrong, accidents happen, people get killed, egos are shattered, & you'd spend most of your time staring into the black, powerless but looking for meaning - the film's point. The search for connection with the unknowable - _that's_ the "human adventure". Lazily dismissed as "slow", the film is extravagantly beautiful - and it gives you the time to savor & ponder what you're seeing/hearing. A masterpiece of mood, _TMP_ is a wholly unique piece of cinema - and certainly an acquired taste.

The opening black screen was for theaters. The overture would play while audiences finished getting seated; then the house lights would go down. '2001' had a similar overture. The Klingon 'language' in this film was just some ad-hoc syllables made up for the actors to say; similar for the brief Vulcan dialogue. In later films, the producers wanted more systematic Vulcan, then Klingon dialogue, and hired a linguist, Mark Okrand, to construct these languages. Mark Okrand continued his work on Klingon and made it a very functional constructed language. The number of 'speakers' of this language is traditionally overrated by orders of magnitude, because those numbers are based on sales of the Klingon Dictionary. This film was the first time that Trek fans had seen the Enterprise at all in years since the TV series (and subsequent animated series) was canceled (let alone on a big screen). You think _you_ got chills? Some fans were literally moved to tears. The protracted fly-around sequence was criticized by many critics, but lots of the fans loved it. The post production ran far behind schedule (the contractor Robert Abel had to tool up basically from zero) and legend has it that Roddenberry delivered the barely-dry prints to the premiere by hand. While I generally think that it would have been a good idea to become more familiar with the original series first, you do have the advantage of not having seen the episode or two which strongly influenced this story (which was originally conceived for a revival TV series). Some (many?) older Trek fans hold the opinion that Abrams at best didn't understand Trek, and at worst ruined it. Star Trek was _never_ about the action, and always strove to be thought-provoking: the original pilot episode of the TV series was rejected for being "too cerebral" even though it had some action sequences (it was structured to show network executives, 'look at all the different stories this format gives us.'). Abrams's version is a product of an age in which action sequences and spectacle are paramount.

In Gene Roddenberry's novelization of the screenplay, it is revealed that Ilia's consciousness, her soul, inhabited the probe's body. When Decker knew this, and when he chose to join with V'ger, he was joining with Ilia in a way humans and Deltans (who are telepathic) normally could not. He was becoming one with the love of his life. I hope you will enjoy the trilogy, Star Trek II-III-IV. You should be made aware that Star Trek II is a sequel to TOS episode "Space Seed," Star Trek III references TOS episode "Amok Time," and both Star Trek III and IV contain characters introduced in TOS episode "Journey to Babel." You may wish to watch those episodes before watching the next films. Please feel free to do so on here! There are more than 700 episodes of Star Trek on Paramount+ now.

Hey Ollie! Great Reaction! I'm excited to hear that you'll be watching all the Star Trek movies, and I look forward to seeing your reactions. The first 6 movies are based off The Original Series (Captain Kirk/William Shatner and crew), and the next 4 are based off The Next Generation (Captain Picard/Patrick Stewart and crew). These are the Star Trek series I grew up watching. You're going to love these movies, and I'd say they only get better after this first one! I think it makes things interesting that you watched the Chris Pine movies first, are now watching the earlier movies, and later potentially the TV series. For example, I've seen some reactors watch the Star Wars prequels before the original trilogy, and it gave them a cool and unique perspective. This is gonna be a fun ride. 🤪

I'm one of the few people who loves The Motion Picture. I have the 2002 Director's Cut DVD, which has numerous scenes cut from the theatrical version, as well as several scenes that were exclusive to the first 1983 TV airing. The new 2022 version adds numerous shots of V'Ger in orbit above Earth. The ship looks very "Borg-ish" for a reason. A retcon years later states that the "machine planet" Voyager 6 landed on was the Borg homeworld, which would explain why V'Ger assimilated everything in its path.
@stevetheduck142510 ай бұрын
Perhaps it was the home-world of Tan Ru, the probe that Nomad encountered way back when. I mean, patterning for data storage doesn't seem very Borg. Not even very Cyberman, which the Borg certainly are very like, and they even quote Cyberman lines when stating 'You belong to us. You will be like us.' or 'You will service us.' and so on.

The slow pacing was one of the big callouts for this film. Robert Wise is an amazing director, but had little knowledge of the source material. Additionally, the film had to start filming without a finished script as the premier date had been locked in. They had to film and write the script as they went. When they decided to film Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, they took the film series back to the style and tone of the original series (which ran for 3 years…79 episodes…from 1966-69). So pleased to see you loved this film in spite of the review scores. The opening theme was such a hit that it became the theme for the second series ST: The Next Generation.

This movie is very underrated. But yes. It must be approached with a different mindset and patience. When I was 12-13 in the early 90s, I would just sit and watch the long sequence when Kirk and Scotty were circling the Enterprise. The music. Yes, things are slow in space. And that last sequence when the Enterprise appears, that was amazing too with the classic riff. It also helped to watch it line a mini-series as I do agree one long sitting can feel overwhelming.

Even before watching your reaction to this film I knew you'd get it. :) The knee-jerk reaction of so many people to this film is just that it's "slow", and therefore somehow automatically bad. Even when the film was originally released (before my time but still, I've read about it), the main reason why cinema audiences were disappointed with the pace of the film was because the first Star Wars had just come out, which had totally redefined people's expectations of a space adventure film. Indeed, Leonard Nimoy (who was one of the main drivers behind Star Trek going to the big screen in the first place) had been deeply impressed by Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey, so he was pushing for a more cerebral and arthouse film in this style. But it turns out he misread the appetite of audiences at the time, who had been thrilled by the swashbuckling high-action charm of Star Wars and were looking for more of the same. But when you put all these expectations aside and just watch the film for what it is, what do you get? A tour de force of practical effects and models, a truly epic score - probably one of Jerry Goldsmith's finest, tasteful (but also trippy) visual effects, a solid sci-fi story with a plot twist that's still interesting today, and pretty great performances across the board. I still think it's one of the best big screen Star Trek productions and I actually enjoy rewatching it more than The Wrath of Khan.

Glad you're doing the "Star Trek" films. As Russell ward said, you should watch the tv episode "Space Seed" before watching "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan". It will give you more background into what happened prior to the time period that the film takes place. Also, I would recommend that you watch the Director's Cut of "Star Trek II" as well. It's not very much longer, but it does give a little more exposition on several scenes. Finally, "Beam me up Scotty" was never actually said in the original series or the original cast movies, much like "Play it again, Sam" was never actually said in "Casablanca". The closest "Star Trek" ever got to that quote was "Scotty, beam me up" and that was a nod to the catchphrase that was going around in the public sphere at that time.

I think the appreciation of it has improved over time. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments on the score, visuals, everything! One of the best scores ever made, and the loving, slow shots of the Enterprise were gold to someone who wanted to see it on the big screen for the first time. It's also so funny that you voice a some of the thoughts that went through my head the first time I saw it. Like "This is how I define unwarranted!" It took me a second viewing to realize that was a response to a question Kirk posed much earlier (as you noted). Also, when Decker says "It disappeared into what they used to call a black hole" I said exactly the same thing you did -- "Well, what do they call it now? Hang on while I get another soda from what they used to call an icebox." I've only just encountered your channel and am thoroughly enjoying your reviews and reactions.
