I watched star trek next gen when I was a kid with my family and was always delighted when a child was in the show. This was actually one of my favorite episodes back then because it helped me imagine what it would be like to be my age on a starship. Also the idea of an imaginary friend becoming real was such a cool concept, even if she did turn evil for a while. Haha. As an adult, I see that it might not build the greater plot but it was still a fun novelty that i bet other families enjoyed watching together.

I like that TNG did episodes with kids every now and then to remind us how this ship is different from the one in TOS. I also think this was a good Troi episode, getting to see her be a counselor doing a good job, instead of just going around sensing this or that. X) And that little red-headed girl they got is so adorable! I'm not even a kid person, and even I look at her and think oh she's so cute!!! Lol. This episode just makes me happy. :)

@One.Zero.One101Күн бұрын
Yeah Troi doing counselor things is the one positive to come out of this episode. I also like when parents and kids are shown on the ship, I like seeing the slice of life. So I guess that makes two positive things, but I don't think that was enough to save this episode.
@Aphasial2 күн бұрын
Kind of a combination of factors here: Bottle episodes do get used to help save production costs so that more budget could be used on bigger episodes, but TNG was still at heart an anthology series, and episodic storytelling survived well into the 90s. They were even accepting pure spec scripts at one point and adapting a what could basically be short stories into episodes. (I don't know that that was the case here.)

Star Trek:TNG always looked to the future as the storylines were concerned, so with that in mind the whole reason for this episode was to give us "imaginary friends" the opportunity to hear Jen go dark by suggesting " that the crew might have to kill this kid" and also experience her shipping Alexander and Clara after complaining about "arranged marriages" and grooming in the previous episode. 😁

Keep in mind this was back when tv shows had 24ish episodes in a single season. So stand alone episodes (or throw away as you put it) are going to be more common to fill out the season. Plus having an episode that largely follows a one off character allows them to overlap episodes while shooting. Probably all/most of the scenes shot with the little girl was probably shot when the rest (or most) of the main cast was shooting a different episode.

In context, a lot of television in the 80's was very much "young adult" oriented, and we had a lot of representation for the 7-12 demographic in various shows . Hence, with the "main stream tv" status that TNG has achieved , putting in shows "for the whole family" was not something unusual ... , while some episodes were a bit too serious for younger audiences . But that was kinda how we rolled in the 80's . Low parental supervision & high amounts of "age inappropriate" content . Hell, Ghostbusters infers a blowjob by a ghost (and had a cartoon series following the popularity of the movie with kids) , Robocop had a guy blown to bits , and another guy melt in acid (and had a cartoon series following popularity with kids) , and Terminator 1 has a full sex scene (mostly without nudity) . The 80's were also kinda awesome because there was still a kind of uniformity in experience . No internet, no smart phone, no individual bubbles to loose the kids in . And parents could talk about known stuff to avoid, if they choose to do so . Good luck warning about a website today .

This is a fun little episode in my opinion, and I love these twists on some standard stories. I'd basically argue that this is entirely Mister Snuffalupagus from Sesame Street, only more sinister. Slightly. (I'm not kidding, because of the reason why they stopped implying Snuffy was imaginary to the adults: the kids COULD always see him, therefore he was definitely real to the intended audience, but the showrunners were told that the lesson they were teaching kids was, "If you tell an adult something that you can't prove, they'll never believe you".)
@RevMan0012 күн бұрын
A lot of these episodes are trying to teach kids/teens lessons, this was created before adults spent a lot of time wrapped up in sci-fi so they are often not the target audience.

TNG episodes are nearly always self-contained stories, for story arc's DS9 is somewhat more like modern hyper serialised shows. There are still a lot of standalone eps, but many more that either connect with other eps or directly continue on from them the very next episode..

I don't know I think the intermediary stories or "throw away stories" have their place in Star Trek . I mean yes the more interesting and intriguing stories are the ones that deal with space politics and recurring villains and that sort of thing but you got to remember these people are traveling through an unknown wilderness where you very well may encounter floating ball of light children or a giant concrete ice cream cone that wants to eat your planet when you're not encountering an ancient Greek gods or Q ! And let's not forget all the space animals that they encounter , from a crystalline entity to a baby space whale that wants to use the Enterprise as its mother ! " It's all Star Trek baby ! " 😄

Great reaction I think this episode is that many things but particularly with children I think it’s to tell parents that kids aren’t always making things up and if ever they’re scared to tell their friends, and this is the all parents to pay attention to them because sometimes parents think her imaginary some the kid did see it there is somebody watching them you know maybe somebody on the bus or somebody on the corner watching the school so just be aware of your kids surroundings and what they’re saying because it could be true what they’re saying somebody could be watching them and them be ready for that and plus you know imaginary friends. Some people say being On KZbin is imaginary because we have friends on KZbin, we don’t actually see the people so we see you but you don’t see us so in a way we’re all friends to each other but yeah in a way this is the way episode back then there’s 26 episodes per season there’s plenty of space to have throwaway episodes whereas today the average show is 10 episodes maybe 12 for streaming services so there’s not much time to write some things and stretch your writing legs. Thanks for the fun until next time.

14:30 That's something that would be weird about serving on a carrier. Or a Galaxy class starship.... there's thousands of people on the crew, and you may never meet the Captain. Whereas, I was on submarines, and the boat is 560 feet (170 m) long, with 120 people aboard. Everybody knows everybody else! On the first day, you meet your whole chain of command, so in my case, sonar leading petty officer, leading Chief Petty Officer, Tactical Systems Officer (TSO), Weapons Officer, Executive Officer (like Riker) and Commanding Officer (Captain). You probably can't name everyone on the crew, but you've seen them. Admittedly, I never really fit in; my motivations seemed very different from most other enlisted members. I don't drink or smoke, and in port, I wanted to go to a museum or go hiking, not get drunk and sleep with prostitutes, lmao. Still, it's definitely a very different experience when you see everybody every day, versus only knowing a small fraction of the crew. 🙂
