The Romulans were never "friends" with the Federation. They were always a mysterious powerful race for which not much was known. In the Star Trek timeline, Earth had fought a war with the Romulans in pre "The Original Series (TOS)" time. A "neutral zone" was established between the Federation and the Romulan Empire. You should watch the excellent TOS episode Balance of Terror. It is one of the few times the Romulans appear in TOS as well as provides some of the backstory about the Federation/Romulan relationship.

TNG is my forever show. I watched it obsessively when I was a teenager back in the nineties, lapped the show many times since then and will certainly lap it dozens of times more. I had a good time watching through your reaction vids for the classic show and their movies but this is going to be the sweet spot for me! 😁 If I were to choose four episodes per season... knowing what I know: Season 1: "Encounter at Farpoint", "The Big Goodbye", "Datalore*" and "11001001. Season 2: "A Matter of Honor", "The Measure of a Man*", "Contagion" and "Q-Who?*" Season 3: "Deja-Q", "Yesterday's Enterprise*", "Hollow Pursuits" and "The Best of Both Worlds*" - So hard choosing only four episodes from this season as it was amazing throughout with only one genuine clunker. Season 4: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 2*", "Family", "Brothers" and "The Nth Degree". Season 5: "Unification, Parts 1 & 2*", "The Inner Light" and "Times Arrow". Season 6: "Times Arrow, Part 2", "Relics*", "Tapestry" and "Descent". Season 7: "Descent, Part 2", "Attached", "The Pegasus", "All Good Things...*" Yeah, choosing only four episodes a season... That's really hard. It's impossible to not leave out a ton of greatness with that kind of restriction. *My favourites for each season.

The entity in the Skin of Evil is very cartoonishly evil. That's the point. He was made from a being that seeked to perfect itself by splitting apart it's good and evil sides. He is meant to be an embodiment of evil, but the whole point is to show that the existence of those negative emotions is not evil itself. It's how you react to them that is good or evil.

Thank you so much for doing this wonderful series! Like many fans, I wish you could watch more episodes per season. There is a lot of necessary worldbuilding info that is revealed slowly through the season, and without seeing all the episodes you will not understand some underlying issues in later seasons. For example, there were Season 1 episodes on Wesley at Starfleet Academy, Troi's mother Lwaxana's crush on Picard, Worf's Klingon culture and values, a conspiracy at Starfleet headquarters, and Picard's backstory with an old flame. Regardless, I'm in for the journey!

I was at my first posting at an Air Force Base in New Mexico when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" started. All of us were apprehensive about whether we would like this new series. However, it finally found it's place in our hearts.

As Gene Roddenberry was at the helm of the early seasons of The Next Generation (TNG), he wanted stories that were standalone, much like most of The Original Series (TOS). So he really didn't want a cliffhanger at the end of the first season. It wasn't until his death, that the series had serialized episodes and story line arcs.

at the time story archs were kind of new thing to TV. and roddnberry was ceratinly old school. even then shows that did introduce story arcs, tended to keep the arcs self contained inside a few episodes ... Then Babylon 5 came along ajnd changed every thing. where the show definitely had a time line story arc and you had to watch them in order. now most shows do this. and it's all thanks to B5 showing every one that it could be done and be successful.

B5's contribution to TV story writing is not something i was praising or condemning. it completely changed story telling in TV , and was an amazing show for what it did ... but at the same time there's a lot to be said for serialized story telling. and it's kind of sad that EVERY show today followes the "big story" style of writing. Not every thing has to be a massive epic and i think TV has lost it's charm in the fact that it used to be the place to get away from epic story telling. it was kind of relaxing to just have something fun and short that is quick to get into and quick to get out of. For that B5 has kinda cursed TV writing. PS and yes it most certainly is the reason old shows do well on streaming. not every one wants to get into a mind bending emotion riveted Epic story .. after slogging through 8-12 hours a work every day.

I at least like some memory to the standalones (as in, things that don't contradict previous episodes -- old sitcoms were great for contradictions). Yes, I miss longer episode runs too. There's room to focus on different characters sometimes and embrace things that happens somewhat organically, which is more difficult with things set in stone.

And so much for Roddenberry's newer baby, TNG, so much for the arcs of the Klingons and the Borg. It seemed that the only things he wanted to go further initially was Q and the Ferengis, who I'm sad to say, Roddenberry botched. Thankfully the DS9 writers salvaged that race and made them credible.

The Next Generation is set roughly 100 years after TOS. In the TOS movies you got to see Enterprises NCC 1701 - NCC 1701 B. This is the Enterprise NCC 1701 D. Ricard is priceless. You managed to mash up the captain and first mates names so effortlessly. The theme song is pretty much the theme from The Motion Picture.

Allot of the fans felt Star Trek: The Next Generation only found its feet in season 3. There was a new confidence and a new energy in season 3. The episodes were well written and produced and got better and better. Star Trek TNG went on for 7 seasons with 4 movies to follow. Not bad for a show that was originally cancelled after 3 seasons.

Brent Spiner is very good at playing both Starfleet Officer Data and psychopath Lore. Worf is a Klingon, but he was orphaned at a young age and adopted by human parents. He had a difficult childhood and is still a little awkward talking to people about anything other than his job, that is why he is sounding a bit like Spock. At this stage they have various people that seem to be serving as chief engineer, later Geordi LaForge takes on that role. A friend of mine and I discussed the differences between OS and NG, and we agreed that the OS was like the wild west out in space and all about "Draw out your phasers FAST!" whereas NG was about expanding your minds and seek out all possibilities of existence. These are my opinion for season 2: -A Matter of Honor -The Measure of a Man(still one of the best TNG eps of all time) -Q Who -Peak Performance (There are 2 more I like but I can only suggest 4. Doing 5 episodes would be a bit better, but still enjoying this big time!

Here we go again! I love your watching of Star Trek. It bring a freshness to it. I began watching Star Trek as a five year old boy with my Dad on a small black & white TV. So, I'm one of the dwindling group of fans who have been there since the beginning. I have a sort of museum of Star Trek in my massive collection of stuff. If you ever have questions, you can message me here, I guess. On with the comments! 2:55 - FYI: Some fans resent the term "Trekkies". My position is that Trekkies are those who have difficulty distinguishing entertainment from reality. (No hate. JK) I refer to myself as a Star Trek fan (a small budget fan). 3:40 - Thank you for not making a fuss over the term "man" in the prologue. It refers to MANkind, the huMAN race, not the male of the species. Some people get so bent out of shape about these things. 3:48 - The theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation sounds familiar to you because it is an arrangement of the theme from Star Trek: The Motion(less) Picture. And, aye, the music of Star Trek is beautiful. 41:00 - In TOS, the stardates were random 4 digit numbers with a single digit past the decimal point. TNG begins approximately 83 years after TOS. The producers wanted to convey the passage of time between the two series, so they made the TNG stardates 5 digits. They're in the 24th century, so the stardates begin with a 4. The next digit is the season. The first season stardates would be 41###.#. The season 5 stardates would be 45###.#. Aside from that, the stardates were sequential throughout each season.

"Everybody has their needs met and there is no disease" sums up why (most) of the first three seasons were lackluster. It's all very nice to imagine Utopia.... but it is not conducive to dramatic story-telling. It wasn't until the introduction of the Borg and Picard becoming more "Kirk-like" that the show really found its footing. I think they were trying too hard in the first seasons to make everyone all respect and admire each other... no real conflict between them. Data and Worf at least had internal conflict. And Patrick Stewart had such great power in his voice that he kept you intrigued. Frankly, Tasha, Troi and Wesley were the real weak elements in the first 2-3 seasons. When you get to Season 3, you might consider watching all the episodes in order... even if it takes you a year or two to get through them. There is a thru-line to the episodes which may not make as much sense if you watch them piecemeal. My 2¢ OF course, I think you should go back and watch ALL of TOS. It is still unmatched.

The saucer seperation was seldom done in the series and the reason there are families onboard was because Gene Roddenberry thought that one of the problems about military service was that too often service members had to leave their families behind and the Enterprise was supposed to be going on a very deep space mission and wouldn't be back for a very long time. Problem was the Enterprise hung out close to home an awful lot.

It's true. I watched Generations with someone who'd only seen odd episodes once, and she was completely lost, because the movie doesn't explain *anything*. It was then that I realized she'd have needed to see Brothers, and Descent 1 & 2 to understand certain story points, and Redemption 1 & 2 to understand others. And watching *those* episodes would require seeing I Borg, Silicon Avatar, Datalore, many many Worf episodes, many Borg episodes, etc etc. TNG had more story arcs than people realize. It just didn't have those arcs running concurrently. And Star Trek Generations references a metric ton of them with no concept that maybe movie-goers might not have seen the TV show. The only Trek shows where I think the pick n mix approach works well are TOS and Voyager.

Romulans appeared in a couple of episodes of the Original Series; at that time they had already fought a war with the Federation, but since none had ever surrendered and they never took prisoners, no one in the Federation had ever actually seen them. It was a big reveal that they are related to Vulcans, but they're like Vulcans before they developed their philosophy of logic and tolerance.

That being said, there may be a few more seasons where you need to do 5 episodes... not that you should, but that you really need to. So trust your people if they suggest this! ❤

These really are not very good episodes except the last one. I understand why you were advised to do the episode where Tasha dies and the one that explains Data's origins but they just are not their best episodes in season one. Q gets better but the second Q episode in season 1 "Hide & Q" I was not crazy about. All the following Q episodes are very good though. For season 2 my picks would be, "Elementary, Dear Data", "Pen Pals", "Q Who" & "Up the Long Ladder". I tear up watching "Pen Pals". Four really is not enough though. Love all your reactions. I like it better when you do it alone because you talk to us. When you're with your sister you talk to your sister.
