I had the opportunity to meet both Michael Dorn (Worf) and Marina Sirtis (Troi) at a sci-fi convention in Waikiki many years ago. Dorn was built like a linebacker, but his personality was the exact opposite of Worf's; he was a personable, funny, jokey guy with a big friendly smile on his face. For her part, Sirtis was even more of a doll in person, but she was a bit of a fuzzbrain, IMO. I enjoyed very much getting the chance to meet and speak to Michael Dorn.

Hey, Courtney! Funny thing about the leg over the chair is that Jonathan Frakes had some kind of back issue and swinging his leg over chairbacks eased his discomfort when shifting to a seated position which he could do fairly easily as a tall guy of over 6'. I never once noticed it during the series' run but saw a compilation video on here years later and now cannot unsee it! It's called "The Riker Maneuver"!

Couple of thoughts on these. Almost all of the episodes up until these have felt to me a lot like TOS episodes in many ways. Neither of these do; they both feel as though they’re speaking with the right own voice. Regarding Worf (and the other Klingons): Worf says he was rescued from the massacre at Khittomer. If that name sounds familiar, recall that Khittomer was the location of Klingon-Federation peace talks in Star Trek IV. :) One other thing, which only occurred to me as I watched this: the renegade Klingons in this remind me of a line from that same movie, uttered by Chancellor Gorkon (went to look it up so as to get it right): “If there is to be a Brave New World, our generation is going to have the hardest time living in it.” The renegades are probably not of Gorkon’s generation, but are close enough that the old world still lives in them; perhaps they’re not having the /hardest/ time in the new one, but it was hard enough.

Nobody knew it, but "Heart of Glory" was the beginning of great things. Worf has something in common with Data and Spock: he was the making of his species. In TOS, Klingons were just stock bad guys. When Micheal Dorn/Worf was done, they were lore.

I think that episode 19 was Star Trek's attempt at "Undercover Boss", at least as far as Mr. Remmick's narrative is concerned. Some of the enigmatic conversations that were never resolved in this episode certainly planted some seeds of intrigue. When Wesley is called "cute", it's like Rudolph's reaction when Clarice called him cute in the old Rankin & Bass claymation.

ooh that first one I thought it was a different episode! There's another episode coming with that admiral....no spoilers though 🙂 Love Star Trek and love your videos and your beauty 🙂 btw on submarines everybody has to pass a psych exam before going to the boat! It's very stressful duty and not everyone can do it....but we had one guy who passed the psych exam, and then we went to do the Submarine Escape Trainer, he couldn't do it, he had claustrophobia! There are videos of it here on KZbin...to escape from a submerged submarine, you go into one of the main entrances to the boat, called Logistics/Escape Trunks (LETs). They are maybe half the width of an office cubicle, and they can hold iirc like 5-8 people. You put on a buoyant vest -- well I think the replaced it with a suit invented by the British after I got out -- but anyway, you put this buoyant thing on, and the LET fills 100% with water. When the pressure inside is equal to the pressure outside, the LET hatch opens, and then you shoot up! You have to exhale the whole time, or you will get the bends. When I did it, there was another step, and you had to swim underwater through a short tube before you shot upward. But yeah, one guy passed the psych exam for submarines and still freaked out by how small the LET was. For us the psych test was just a written exam. We can go "greater than 800 feet (243 m)" underwater (I know the exact number, but it's classified!) but the LETs are only tested to 400 feet (121 m). For deeper than that, you're supposed to wait for the DSRV, Deep Sea Rescue Vehicle, which attaches to the LET with a metal to metal seal, a "covalent bond" requiring the LET surface to be very flat...I was part of the team that sanded those surfaces, and we had to do it three times to get it smooth enough...that's a story for another time lol🙂

The issue a lot of people have for Wesley are not actually with Wesley, but the writers. They really didn't know what to do with Weseley Crusher so they started having him saving the ship, a lot. Any time anything happened, they needed Wesley to come to the rescue. It really became pronounced in later seasons.
@Semaj4747Ай бұрын
Heart of Glory: One of my favorites of S1. We finally get a proper Worf episode and some answers to his past. The writers were a bit vague in his backstory given he was such a late addition to the cast. The character arc of Worf clashing with his cultures will be a huge thing for a long time. Gene didn’t want to return to the old aliens from the TOS days like Vulcans and Klingons. Gene’s grip on power was starting to loosen because this episode would not have been possible in earlier episodes. The Klingon/Fed alliance is very, very important to this portion of the galaxy. I guess the Organians looked into the TNG era and knew the two enemies to work together. The alliance will be better defined in future seasons. And, there will be mural respect between Klingons and humans with better writing. This is the beginning of an overreaching Klingon arc you will come to enjoy, can’t wait to see your reaction. Can’t spoil something, but you are picking up some tensions on the set with certain actors. Things are happening BTS that are really bad between the writers and actors. There will come a point when these tensions will come to a head and affect the production. There is also another battle going on between a producer and an actor/actress that no one really knows about yet. It is extremely bad. You are sensing something is wrong behind the scenes.

Coming of Age: This is a pretty good episode that reveals that they could do continuity in TNG. They referenced many past episodes and it shows the skill level of the cast’s acting. I love the switching of characters between Remmick and the crew, great editing. Jake has one of the MOST 80s haircuts. People stealing a shuttle will become a cliché in Trek. This is merely the beginning. Shuttles are the Kia cars of the 24th century. The cancer in Starfleet is setting up something important that will be paid off. Is it some people inside or outside causing problems for SF? The concept will come back many times and will be important in the future. We’re moving toward the “Trust No One” 90s. This will set up a small S1 arc and cause some major heat between Gene and the writers. We’ll get there. I had a crush on T'Shanik back in the day. Tasia Valenza, the Vulcan, became a VO actor in Star Wars, Batman, and MGS video game series. She will return to the Trek universe sort of.

@N0-1_H3r3Ай бұрын
Remmick consistently refers to Riker as "Mister" - that's something you do for subordinate officers and junior officers. Remmick's a Lieutenant Commander, Riker outranks him. Even if Remmick has authority over Riker due to the circumstances, he's still insulting Riker by not addressing him by his rank. It's a tiny thing, but it shows just how casual and instinctive his disrespect is.

The Klingon language heard in "Heart Of Glory" is just Klingon-sounding gibberish. After this the producers would make extensive use of the fully fleshed-out language created by linguist Mark Okrand for Star Trek III.

Courtney, as the series progresses and if you are still reacting to two episodes at once you may be finding yourself deciding it’s a tie between the two as to which you like best. From season three onwards you may have several ties.

Worf was always the most interesting character in Star Trek Next Gen and Deep Space 9. He has a similar conflict that Spock had, but shows it very emotionally. The only rather disappointing part is they do often make him seem a bit weak for a Klingon. However, he was always exciting to watch. I was very disappointed that the actor pitched a Worf centered show or movie which Paramount turned down. I personally would have loved a Klingon centered show.

Your speech at the end reminds me of something Mysterio (of all people said): Never be ashamed of being the smartest person in the room. That doesn't mean arrogance-I detest that, but it also doesn't mean you should be bullied for being intelligent, or feel as if you have to hide it. Courtney, I am going to tell you something a bit personal: When I first moved here from Canada, the only time I felt uncomfortable as a Black male was from Black people. I never had any problems with Whites or any other race (that I can remember), but I invariably had a Black person try to disparage me as "acting White" It is honestly sad, because they are in effect saying that we as Black people are less intelligent/behaved, etc, and so anything taking away their worldview is "someone acting White"

Westly is by no stretch of the imagination an Alpha Male. But I do think he would have been better off with his own show... SOY-BOY: The First Generation Yeah, not a big fan of the character. At conventions I remember asking uncomfortable questions of the actors back in the day. Frakes never remembered me but Wheaton always did...an probably still would. He'd pass me up and most other people would wonder why to the point nobody was raising their hands. Eventually to not come off as a jerk to the crowd he'd ipick me. And like year 2 a question would be" So Westly is getting older, is he ever gonna get laid or what?" And he'd seriously answer"That's up to the writers and..." I'd cut him off,"Its a simple yes or no question. The producers have enough problems just makng the show. They want to keep it simple and cheap. You're boss will never offer you a raise..or write you in more unless you gotta ask for it." A girl is never gonna go out with a boy unless he asks. Thats how life is. P.S. I'm a good 7 years older then Wheaton but at the time looked roughly the same age. Plus he's the Mark Hamil or Star Trek. His political views are WAY out there. I'd never start a fist-fight with an actor. Just keep me out of arms reach of J.J. Abrams or grab a beer and sit back cause only one of us would be walkng away from tha one.😮😮
