Hi Jen, every time I see a new Star Trek reaction from you I smile. I'm loving how much fun you're having. Looking at the thumbnail for this video (which I'm anxiously awaiting) I wanted to give you some trivia: Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. Riker) really does play the Trombone. Hey Jen, Fun Fact: Jonathan Frakes plays trombone on a song from the band Phish. The album is called "Hoist", and the song he plays on is called "Riker's Mailbox". Apparently Jonathan lived next door to the producer of Phish's album, and he had a strange mailbox...hence the title. The band members were fans of TNG and asked him to come over and play.

On an unrelated topic, Minuet is hot! 🖖 Edit: Someone *has* to serenade Jen with a trombone now, preferably dressed as Riker. 🤗

“Lol” Riker in the holo-deck during work hours engaging in spicy activity… now that’s some old school TNG that long time fans tend to take for granted. So much fun to watch you watching it. And despite my personal hx with Weasley Crusheer I have to say it’s refreshing to see someone giving Will Wheaton a fair shake for his acting through lines he didn’t write. Good on you for giving Wes a fresh fan. Doesn’t change how I feel about the character but I do appreciate seeing a new perspective that I haven’t considered. 🖖

"11001001" always was one of my favorite all-time TNG episodes. In my view it stands with the best stuff the show ever produced. The Enterprise of the early Trek shows doesn't really explore the galaxy as much as it explores the human psyche, and that's what's going on in this episode. Also, the Bynars were a really cool, cute race which was criminally underused for nearly all of the rest of Trekdom. While I do enjoy the high-octane action shows we get these days, I would like to see a bit of a turning back to the more philosophical profile that TNG had. Of course, that requires some very sharp writing and direction skills to pull off successfully, nowadays it's much easier to fill out any weaknesses of the plot with special effects phaser battles... Le sigh. One can at least hope, eh?

As always, you're delightful in these reactions. And I'm glad you've started saying "a beautiful woman is usually trouble" instead of "the Sexy Lady is always shady." 😆 I did, indeed, anticipate that you would love Riker playing in a jazz club; I don't think it's a spoiler to say that his trombone will appear again someday. 😉 Carolyn McCormick, the actress who plays Minuet, later had a recurring role on "Law & Order" as Dr. Elizabeth Olivet, the psychiatrist employed by the D. A.'s office to evaluate suspects and defendants. She played that role very well, but I have to admit that, whenever she began to speak, I always expected her to say, "My name is Minuet and I love all jazz."
@RandomNonsense19858 ай бұрын
I keep forgetting the first couple of TNG seasons were from before Law and Order premiered. Early L&O’s “gritty” look makes it feel like it’s a full decade older than TNG.

That wisecrack about Worf finally developing a sense of humor is particularly ironic, since, to my recollection, Micheal Dorn was one of the funniest people in the cast.
@dunringill17478 ай бұрын
With ST TNG, like any other show, we take the better with the lesser episodes. - I think learning that Jonathan Frakes is a jazz music fan who actually plays trombone has increased Jen's crush factor on him by a significant amount. - I also think there was a good acting performance from Clayton Rohner (Adm. Mark Jameson) as he confronted Karnas while dying - finally convincing Karnas that he was Jameson.

I remember reading somewhere, that "Too Short a Season" was originally conceived as a sequel to the TOS episode "A Private Little War" where Kirk faced a similar issue of a species receiving arms from aliens. It would've been a vehicle to have Shatner come back as Kirk. I don't have any citation or anything, but with the details adjusted it would make sense.

I have to say, I know the image quality has been remastered, but those old space dock scenes and filming models still hold up today. I remember watching 11001001 as a kid and was enthralled by the idea of the ship being stolen. The stakes seemed so high! As a minor plot hole, Picard visting the holodeck was as Minuet said "Happenstance". If this is true, how would Riker alone download the information to reboot the Binars homeworld? You need to work in pairs afterall ;) Still...entertaining episode, and reaction! Also, the bun makes me think of early Captain Janeway.

The cameo’s are to explore thoughts that will have death or tragic outcomes scenes and they don’t want to inflict negative effects on the main characters even though they do have losses in different ways and reasons. So that’s why they use a throwaway character so the viewer doesn’t have to loss someone they are connected with.

Between season 1 and 2 Jonathan Frakes was in a production of 'Hamlet' for which he grew his beard. He was going to shave it off again, but the show-runners liked it, thinking it looked 'nautical' (Star Fleet does use navy ranks). When shown in the UK there was no break between the two seasons so some believed the beard was false. If there was not problem there would be no plot to the episode. If an actor has a skill (such as playing an instrument) they will often try and use it in a show.

when TNG was shown for the first time, it took me two full seasons to settle in and like it. on DSN it took me only one season to to settle in and like it. and for VOY, it was immediate to settle in, but overall i still didn't like most of it, with all the long travel and consequentially lots of logical problems (eg meeting the same races again and again) or other "start trek atypical" behavior (eg a loose interpretation of the prime directive). it reminded me of the long travel and jumps in "space 1999".

Try to remember that most tv from the 90s were designed for syndication, so having one-off episodes that were self-contained was the way to go. So not every episode is going to have lasting or significant character development. That being said, something from 11001001 does receive a call-back in a future episode, so keep an eye out!

It's nice to see you singing along to Ron Jones' beautiful score to "11001001." It's a favorite episode of mine, and one of the gems of the otherwise clunky Season 1, alongside of "The Battle." It's one of the rare episodes that uses the then-ensemble fully and well. Picard and Riker shine having an action adventure together to fight the clock. Data and Geordi get a moment together and true exploration of humanity (duty v. leisure.) Dr. Crusher opens up just a bit, even Tasha Yar has a moment with Worf. Not enough Season 1 episodes used the full ensemble-I think nine actors was a little much. (Side note: This was one of four episodes in Season 1 where Marina Sirtis did not appear as Counselor Troi.) Carolyn McCormick really shines as Minuet. She had just starred in Spenser For Hire as Rita Fiori in the '86-'87 TV season and would go on to play Dr. Elizabeth Olivet in Law and Order. Thanks for sharing.

Holodecks aren't transporters or dimensional portals. You can't enter one and leave another unless someone uses a real transporter to beam you to the second holodeck. Holodecks are just extremely advanced virtual reality systems. When you're in one, you're still physically just in the room. When it creates a projection of some other location that is bigger than the physical room, like a canyon or something, you can walk the entire canyon because the holodeck moves the projection when you walk so that you stay in place relative to the real holodeck walls. In other words, it works kind of like a treadmill: the entire projection, including the ground beneath your feet, moves so that you don't.
