Worf as chief of security makes a lot more sense. Had Denise stayed, Worf would have only been the token Klingon but now he gets to be the token Klingon, AND chief of security. Now that I think about it, it wouldn't really have made much difference. At the time, however, I did want her to stay.

@@martinfehringer6408 I think the fact of her death sucks for that reason... but I've heard some rather compelling arguments that there's no such thing as a dignified death. (And after my dad passed away from a glioblastoma so aggressive it grew through the chemo and radiation two years ago? I'm fairly certain I agree.) The Klingon and Hollywood ideal of going out like a champ, to me, is BS. Every death sucks, period. From Yar to Spock with David Marcus and the redshirts in-between.

All us fans were just as shocked at Tasha’s death back in 1988 as you are in this video, Jen. Especially since we had only recently dealt with Spock’s death, only to see him reborn in the following movie. I would put the first season over the terminally boring Season 7... at least Season 1 had really good stories, great drama, and top-notch production values even while the main cast were settling in and writers having to wrestle with Gene Roddenberry's diktats. Season 7 (with the exception of a few episodes) was an effective cure for insomnia. Brannon Braga has stated the writers were "burnt out" by the seventh season and didn't really know what else to do with the main characters... I would counter that losing some of their best writers - Michael Pillar, Jeri Taylor, Ira Steven Behr, etc - to unnecessary spin-offs while the 'mothership' series is still ongoing was a major mistake.

The beautiful Michelle Phillips, a member of one of the greatest singing groups, the Mamas & Papas. Her looks changed little since the 1960's, probably with a little help, but still beautiful. You would think they would have learned that time science is dangerous from "Back to the Future". When first seeing Lt. Yar being killed it was just as shocking as you thought it was. Denise Crosby wanted to do other projects. One of those was a small roll in a movie "Skin Deep" with John Ritter, hilarious. And yes, no spoilers, y'all.

Denise Crosby left the show because she felt she wasn't getting enough character development and was mostly in the background saying the same things in every episode. There is a season one fan theory regarding why the Enterprise D has so many department heads in engineering. Even though the ship has been in deep space operations for about three months at this point, this is still her shakedown voyage. This is why engineering has so many more personnel then would normally be on a galaxy-class starship. As all the fine-tuning is completed, personal will be transferred or reassigned while a permanent crew selected from the Enterprise’s existing staff will be given responsibilities as managers and department heads. Eventually, a permanent chief engineer will be selected from the ship’s current roster.

Tasha's death was so traumatizing to me. It's a long story that I'll spare you from but, for the longest time, I only had a box set of the first season on DVD--the last tape of which, didn't work. I bought it at a yard sale and I watched those four tapes over and over and over. Saw episodes 1-20 enough times I could recite them. And Tasha was my hero. I dressed up as her for Halloween 3-4 years in a row and wrote a paper about her in grade school naming her as my role model...I loved her. When I was 12 or 13 I had a summer job and earned enough to buy the whole Next Gen series on DVD and I planned to binge watch it starting from the beginning with the episodes I'd seen a million times. I was so excited when I finally got to episodes 21, 22...and then in 23 TASHA DIED. Just like that. She was a first season character! I wasn't prepared for Star Trek without her. I still enjoyed it--Data took her place as my favorite--but I really was devastated by the loss. I told Denise Crosby this story when I met her at the 25th Anniversary Convention in Calgary. haha. Anyway, I know it was her choice but it still was so tragic to me.

5:23 Mark! Hmm. I think it was this very episode that gave her the time and the incentive to accept an offer from "Playboy Magazine"? 🤔 The picture set included her posing as "Natasha Yar" as well as older pictures of her as herself from her younger ages plus newer ones. It has been decades since I perused that issue. I intended to have her sign it, and it probably never got unpacked. 🤔

The Playboy pictures happened before Star Trek, I believe. At the time she was chosen for a pictorial, Denise had long hair. The day before the pictorial, she cut her hair short, on a whim. When she showed up, the photographer was upset, but they carried forward with the shoot. She's had the short hair ever since.

@albertmartinez2539 ! Ah, okay! Timelines, like that mess with my mind! The pictures that I saw were old and new, but maybe the magazine used some when she wasn't the cover girl, but my memory cells filed them as one event? 🤔 Shannon Doherty was the hostess of a prank show with an SF theme. She supposedly spoiled the illusion of the series being done live by revealing that her whole season's worth of camera time was done during 10 hours of one day! They got mad at her for that, though, I thought it was unfair because both Ricki Lake and Jenny... a blonde whose surname I'm forgetting now made no secret of how many episodes of their respective talk shows were made in one day! 😳 With details like that in mind, I wouldn't try to guess how far in advance a magazine is made ahead of the release date printed on the cover, which for monthly magazines is put out a month early. 😀 Plus, at conventions, no one seems to be able to be consistent during repeats of anecdotes! Someone is always in the restroom or eating and misses when the question was asked the first time, so he or she repeats it! To avoid boredom, the answers get changed a little. Kevin Sorbo tried to keep himself and "Hercules" separate, but eventually, he gave up and answered as himself! By the way! Denise! On stage, she would fidget with her folding chair or sitting position, but behind her were big screens for the people in the "General Admission" bleachers, and to the video camera, she looked sexy doing those moves! In the front row, I was able to see how different it looked! In the back, people on stage are ant-sized, and on screen, they look doll-sized, like "Barbie"! So their impressions of her were different! With poor Jennifer Lien, some moron thought that she was high because she's an actress! I had to correct him on several issues! It helped that I had just talked to her before she was on stage, as I got her autograph. She complained about something, and as an allergy sufferer myself, I recognized what she was suffering from, and as it was her first time in Oklahoma, she was unaware of her allergies to what was affecting her then! Her assistants got her some allergy medication that was making her drowsy by the time she was on stage. I wouldn't have thought that so many dummies would presume she was high! Mostly visitors from out of state that had no allergies and were clueless! But my points are perception! Perception! Perception! Thanks for your clarification! 🖖

From what I read in the 90s, Denise Crosby decided to leave because she felt a lack of character development for Tasha, and she wanted more. A pity, because most of the other main characters were really fleshed out in the next couple of seasons. And IIRC, it was Roddenberry's idea that she die an unceremonious death, no heroic struggles or sacrifice for others -- a meaningless end that might be expected of a security officer. That never sat well with many, and there is a bit of redemption later ... I cannot say more!

31:15 Mark! Aha! You hit upon a point that was resolved by the show runners of "The Orville"! They came up with a location neutral term! Ships have decks, hence the term "Holodeck"! Quark, though, aboard a space station, would still have similar terminology. But he also had a built-in hotel comprised of "holosuites" so that guests could program their rooms! But both terms are based on location. Yet, laymen, somehow ignorant of that aspect, applied both terms in a reckless way. But thanks to "The Orville" we now have a better term that isn't dependent on the exterior setting. However, as an initialism or acronym, I forget which term. laymen will want to genericize it! So "simulator" is the better generic term without trying to be technical! 😊

Thanks for the reaction, This goodbye by Tasha was very well done (at least her speech to the other crew members and friends.) Curiously, we learn more about Picard and Data here than Tasha! It may sound a bit harsh, but to me "Skin of Evil" marks the end of the first season and the start of TNG (Season 2 has it's ups and downs, but it gets better). Btw. Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) is the Stuart Sutcliffe of Star Trek.

@@JJ_W He didn't die, but he left the band before it got famous. As far as i know Crosby left TNG, because she was unhappy that she had only a few character scenes in the whole season. After she left she got no decent roles anymore, while TNG became hugely popular in the following years.

I just wish we had had a chance to understand Yar better. She could very well have been one of the most complex characters on the show. I think she felt similar to Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) in TOS, that her character was an afterthought at best, and Crosby didn't have someone talk her out of hanging it up at the first chance.

15:03 Mark! Behind-the-scenes stuff, be damned! This is still an emotional episode for me. For one, I wouldn't see "DC" act again until she appeared as a mother in the movie "Deep Impact"! I'm not sure if I've seen her acting since. 🤔 But anyway, it also frustrated me from then on whenever I attended funerals because they aren't as high-tech as this one. (Though slide shows have been added.) I would rather be converted into a holographic AI, but we aren't there yet. We're still primitives. 😢 Yes, I know, it was a big presumption to think that's what they did with her body! 😮

Hah, i've heard of "plot armour" but I think this is my first time encountering "beard armour" :). Yep, Tasha's death is among the most affecting in Trek IMO. All the moreso because, off the usual pattern, she didn't have some big, heroic self-sacrificial exit, she just got killed doing her job, like could happen to anyone. And her parting words are beautifully written (if, before I go, someone I know were to say of me I had "the heart of an explorer and the soul of a poet"... well, I think I could go happy).
