Exactly this, I left a comment about the same thing. It's the only weakness to this part of the storyline, they did not address the right of a patient to refuse treatment based on their own beliefs. Too focused on Worfs choice they didn't let the characters think about the Romulans choice to refuse.

_"Not even the Doctor asked permission."_ A kink in the armor of the otherwise-inspiring utilitarianism of TNG.

It actually makes more sense to get permission from Worf before offering a solution to the patient.. There is also the concept of therapeutic privilege which suggests that Crusher doesn't need to inform the Romulan given the alternative is certain death. The discussion of ethics are interesting because you can argue to tell him the origin of resolution may be just as unethical as not telling him.

There is so much to love about 3x7 "the Enemy". First, Picards stance towards the Romulans. Normally one would have expected that he would try to sort out a compromise in this situation, but Picard made it clear that he definitely was ready to fight, should the Romulans cross the border. (i love standoffs like that) Also, i love that he is a Character who wants his Crew to make their own choices (at least when it comes to personal matter, which a blood donor is). Lesser show writers had simply made Picard order Worf to do what he thinks is best in this situation. (I'm 100% certain that a certain other Captain would have done this *cough*Janeway*cough*.) Second, Worfs choice NOT to help the Romulan. To me this is the (galorndon...klingon(?)) core of this Episode. It showed, that altough Worf was raised in the Federation, he is still a Klingon at his heart. It's not that i like his decision, but i LOVE that the writers/Producers had the balls to go against what a character would have had normally done in a TV series of the early 90s. Lesser writers would have either made Worf act completely out of character and made him help the Romulan, because it is the "right thing to do" (and the audience has to see what the "right choice" is) OR Worf would have been depicted as the bad guy and his decision as clearly evil. But back then writers had trust that the audience was not stupid. Great Writing!

That's because it introduces us to an unstable wormhole in which one end is in the Alpha Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy and the other end is in the Gamma Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy, both ends shifting. There are also two other quadrants called the Delta and the Beta in the galaxy. No spoilers, just answering question, Jen! Humans and Romulans had sporadic, limited, isolated contact at best. TNG actually has the most contact with the Romulans, face to face, than Starfleet has ever had. In the first contact war they never saw Romulans. Considerably later, Kirk and his Enterprise saw the Romulans for the first time. I think you saw Balance of Terror? After the sixth movie, Undiscovered Country, Romulus went completely dark and communicated with no one for 70 years until TNG.

34:01 "I feel like you could lift that episode _right_ out and it wouldn't make _any_ difference at all." That was actually an ethic they tried to follow with _TOS_ and _TNG._ Even really _high stakes_ episodes like _The Best of Both Worlds_ were pretty well insulated as far as their reach into neighboring episodes went. This didn't start to change until _DS9_ came along and there were arcs reaching across five or _six_ episodes.

Just a bit of Trek Lore: The Milky Way Galaxy is subdivided into four quarters, the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta Quadrant. Earth (and the Federation) is exactly at the border of Alpha and Beta Quadrant. In early Trek (especially TOS and the TOS movies) the term Quadrant was sometimes thrown in because it sounded sci fi-ish, but since TNG the lore is much clearer.

I think it's also important to remember that the Romulan refused Worf's blood anyway. Would they have forced him to take the treatment? I don't think so, if they didn't force Worf to give his blood, I can't imagine they would force a patient to receive treatment they do not want. So even if Worf relented, Crusher would have another dilemma of the Romulan refusing the treatment knowing it came from a Klingon.

I will always love how they just threw up a couple of mirrored walls in one of the engineering corridor sets and turned it into an impromptu yoga studio. It's so obvious when you look at it, but it still looks okay. That's probably why they start the shot with Gates bent over the way she is, so we're all too distracted to notice the set. Ral is a sleazebag and he knew it. That's why he blew up at Deanna when she confronted him about his empathic abilities. Deep down, he knows the way she uses her empathic abilities is more moral than the way he uses his. She uses hers to save lives; he manipulates for personal and professional gain. So, he deflected and tried to tear her down to make himself feel better. I also don't think he was truly sincere about changing his ways at the end. I mean, he may have meant what he said in the moment, but a few months down the line, I bet he'd revert to his old tricks.

That first one is great, that's classic star trek! Second one, well, it's still a good story 🙂 And you're still beautiful 🙂

Communicators functional! Phasers are very effective! Shields will hold indefinitely! Computers running at full capacity! Warp core at 110% efficiency! -things you will NEVER hear in TNG 😂

1:18 "Can he see _anything_ without his VISOR?" I suspect, if he could, he probably would not have made a good candidate for it.

It would be cool if Worf wanted the captain to give the donation order because he secretly wanted to donate but just couldn't say it himself.

Well, if she likes wormholes, then she's going to like DS9.

Hi Jen, part of the fun with Star Trek is discovering which episodes are our favorite. I, for one, am excited to see you continue on your journey. Have a great Sunday, and I'll see you for "Days Of Future Past" tomorrow

Had to look it up, and yup! That's him Andreas Katsulas! So sad he's passed, he was a great actor. In fact I think about half the cast is gone from B5.

Romulan commander Tomalak will make many more recurring appearances in the future. He really wants to stick it to Picard for having shown him up in this episode.

You never know, "The Price" might be important and referenced later on in the Trek universe.
