Mad respect for the Enterprise-D here! The whole point of this is to show how unrelenting the Borg are, how ill-prepared Starfleet is, and how easily their defenses can be swept aside. But for all that that is true, one thing gets glossed over: Starfleet was new and unprecedented to the Borg, too! A mere three phaser blasts wrecked 20% of that Borg Cube (and they didn't regenerate that damage or adapt to the Enterprise's phasers until they'd given the Borg time to do so). Had Picard had the mindset to just tell Worf to hold the phaser button down and keep firing, the Enterprise-D could have soloed that Borg Cube.
@JK-Visions
@JK-Visions Жыл бұрын
yes they were too much on the exploring and didnt understand that the borg had to be stopped rightaway. Q did help them to show them how quickly the Borg could adapt. I do wonder however if they kept firing perhaps they would adapt at blast 4 or 5.
@LordSiravant
@LordSiravant 3 ай бұрын
Nope. They'd stop having any effect after the third, maybe fourth blast. The Borg adapt quickly.
@balrighty3523
@balrighty3523 3 ай бұрын
@LordSiravant I don't know that we can take that completely at face value. Remember: we're almost always seeing the Borg from the perspective of the Federation, and we only ever get one introduction to them: this episode. And in this episode, we see the E-D fire three phaser blasts and wreck 20% of the Cube. Then they stop, discuss, send an away team, and so on. In all of this, the Borg are repairing and analyzing both the information the drones collected from Main Engineering and the damage the E-D inflicted. After this point, after the Borg have this base of knowledge for Federation tech, they indeed can adapt very quickly to what Starfleet tries to do. What I'm saying though is that, in a hypothetical alternate take where the Borg encounter Starfleet for the first time, encounter phasers for the first time, and haven't had time to analyze this tech or build a knowledge base, a Galaxy-class ship willing to keep firing until the phaser relays burn out would totally destroy the Cube before they have the chance to start adapting. But like I said, we'll never know because we'll never get another test case of the Borg encountering offensive technology they've never encountered before and from a culture more willing to use excessive force and see how quickly they go from "absolutely no information" to "instant adapting".

@@balrighty3523 Actually, we DID get a taste of this in Voyager. When Seven of Nine was coerced into rejoining the Collective, the Queen took her to a planet in her own personal vessel and two other cubes to assimilate it, and the enemy fleet had weapons that could penetrate the Borg shields. The Queen makes a point of asking Seven what they should do, and her self-preservation takes over and she offers the solution. The Queen responds, "I was thinking the exact same thing," and the adaptation takes all of two seconds, after which the enemy vessels are completely unable to damage them any further.

It's true but, Q was trying to show the Federation that their tactics of how to approach the unknown were horribly misguided on the Borg. Q knew that if Starfleet didn't have prior knowledge and knew what a threat they are, they'd be wiped out easily and quickly adapt the whole fleet to deal with the Federation Phasers.

@@goobytron2888 yes and to be clear, I think it’s just an error due to budget/time constraints, BUT in fact Picard’s line even implies it: LOCATE the EXACT source…. If he just meant “shoot the hole where the beam comin out Mr. Worf!” It would be a sad indictment of enterprise targeting. We know from other lines that they were able to scan interior workings of the cube - power levels and transfers etc.

So, theoretically, let’s suppose that a smaller Borg pod or ship got transferred in to the Star Wars universes. Pick any planet you want. What insane things would occur from the moment they appear? Think of random places like a senate meeting, house, training missions, and ships. Don’t be afraid to use a little dark humor. Because the Borge can take disintegrating phaser blasts like nothing, keep in mind light sabers probably won’t do squat.

@@JK-Visions I think the intent of the showrunners was that everything Q did over the course of the franchise, from TNG to VOY to finally PIC, was basically his way of orchestrating the Federation defeating the Borg. They were the single biggest threat to the Federation. He didn't intervene in the Dominion War because he knew the Federation could handle the Dominion without his interference, and he was right. Q could deny it all he liked, he had a soft spot for humanity and WANTED them to succeed.

One thing that I never understood was that if Guinan knew about the Borg and their destructiveness for 100 years, then why in the hell did she never feel the need to tell anybody in Star Fleet about it until this very instance?

 @JK-Visions They knew about Guinan and her race for at least 75-80 years prior to the TNG-era Star Trek, as per the continuity established in the movie Generations. You'd think that Guinan or one of her ilk (i.e. Dr. Soren, etc.) would have at least mentioned the Borg to the Federation at some point in time prior to this, since they all but destroyed her entire race. Maybe you're right that the Federation was too arrogant to believe that they were a threat, but you'd think that the captain of their flagship would've at least heard of the Borg prior to Q's trick in this episode. Also, don't get me started on the continuity errors that Voyager introduced into the Borg timeline with Seven of Nine's background story...good grief!

My theory is that Starfleet probably interviewed the survivors, but that perhaps the explanation seemed farfetched to Starfleet and so the Borg were relegated as mere mythology of a superstitious alien culture and not considered a true threat. Maybe some footnote about the Borg existed from the interviews but it was probably classified and not considered to be factual. Starfleet probably believed the El-Aurian homeworld was destroyed by some other cause and that the Borg story was in effect a myth intended to explain another occurrence. Had they cross referenced those stories with Captain Archer's logs from 2153 a different theory may have emerged. But perhaps Archer was not a good writer and so his logs were dismissed as well, and the two different cyborg encounters were never correlated because the crew of the Enterprise NX-01 never called the cyborgs by their name.

Well, How did she get to be a bartender in the first place? But my assumption was that she arrived in the Federation to escape her past, and the Borg. And just disappeared into the scenery. @JK-Visions
@JK-Visions 16 күн бұрын
That's true, but standing up to them usually also does the trick according to psychology. But if they smell weakness they most of the time go all in. Which is sad but harsh reality. I know from the bad side too. I came into the class halfway through the year so I was out of my comfort zone for a while. It ended up fairly ok but I did get some bullying to endure before I got my act together again.
