Love it. Maybe some to consider is the very first contact in TNG where they say if they resist they will be punished. Kinda unique. And maybe the First Contact when they’re listening to the federation engage the Borg. That one sounds kinda unique too with the crisp audio and kinda echo and music.

Enter Soviet and Japanese Forces. Soviets had "barrier troops" with machineguns and mortars to prevent the bolt-action equipped Infantry and Scouts from retreating or deserting. Japan had so thoroughly indoctrinated their Soldiers from birth, that Bushido Code was sown into their very being and consciousness. They would rather hug a grenade or jump from a cliff, than dishonor: themselves, their Families and the Emperor. The only way for them their Spirit to "climb Mount Suribachi" so that their Kami can join the God Emperors.

Man, that just goes to show how quickly the Dominion, with all of their allies, would lose to the Borg, if they chose to initiate a full scale invasion of the Gamma Quadrant. The Dominion's biggest weakness was their hubris, which is why Wolf 359 was such a disaster. Now, imagine that battle, but scaled up for the entire Gamma Quadrant. Entire Star Systems are assimilated, Dominion warships, Distinctiveness, knowledge, experience and combat prowess are assimilated into the collective. The rest of the populated Galaxy wouldn't stand a chance.

An adaptable and fearless foe bereft of ego... No wonder they were eventually humanized; merely attempting to comprehend them is horrifying in and of itself. In my opinion, the Borg should have been used three or maybe four times at the most. 1. Introduction. 2. Conflict. 3. Resolution (preferably a defeat that involves tricking them, as opposed to a victory obtained through raw firepower.) They would have retained their fearsome reputation.

Yes, I always like seeing those scenes. It's a pity we didn't get much of the Borg POV outside First Contact and Dark Frontier (and a few times with Seven of Nine). However, the nitpick in me always took issue with the one time they said "grid 03" when it should have been "grid 003", especially since it contradicted the Collective's statement in "Drone" with "grid 006", not "grid 06".

The writers behind TBOBW really understood the characterization of the Borg. Did you notice, in the original context, the phrase "Resistance is futile," was in response to Picard's statement "I will resist with you with my last strength." "Strength is irrelevant, resistance is futile." But in First Contact and Voyager, their dialogue with Picard is rewritten slightly and becomes their cliche catchphrase every time they show up...

The borg should not have had a queen... thats what made them so cool and frightening. They had no centralized power hiërarchie. Their structure came from a collective consciousness functioning as a single being. They could have done so much more and far cooler things with them than what they did. To be fair, the borg was one of the most powerfull and scary enemies in the series. The thought of giving up individuality and free will has a terrifying effect on a person.

Even with the queen, the thought of giving up your individuality to her collective is still terrifying. The only reason the borg were so much more terrifying at the beginning was they were an extremely powerful unknown. The thing with unknowns is, once we start studying and understanding them they typically turn out to be at least a little less scary. Also we have seen that even with the destruction of the queens body she still "lives" as she is not a physical being but a living machine/program in a sense, and uses another similar looking female drone as her avatar.

The Borg in the original TNG conception were totally chilling. It was great that they were used so sparingly in that series - they're the kind of villain that shouldn't show up unless the writers really have something good up their sleeves. Voyager gets a lot of flak for watering them down, which I tend to agree with. Can't say I was really a fan of Species 8472 as a creative contribution to the lore - I was much more of a fan of the Vidiians, which were much more complex and had a unique potential for visceral horror in Trek. But as far as the Borg go, I do love that one scene where the liberated Borg heal Chakotay, with their voices gradually merging into that of the Collective. It was actually really, really creepy, and it would have been even better if they had taken that into a much darker direction.

Were the vidiians the medic harvesters? If so they are one of tbe best si fi races ever to me, what kind of alien would i want to be, one of them, they were better than the borg as they were about taking the flesh, whereas the borg want you body and soul, having your soul left behind in less body is worse

Exactly. The drones stopped looking disinterested and aloof and started to look intentionally threatening. They were bland with few colours, unlike the later primarily green--but also blue colour scheme. Their ship was also just a large cube of metal shit stuck together with no apparent rhyme or reason, yet it was highly threatening. However, in doing so, it lost the subtlety. Also, the introduction of the Queen and hierarchy created it's own problem. The notion that they see us as "archaic authority driven" cultures is a far more terrifying thing. They would have no leader. There was no one of them you could talk with. All you could do was destroy them.

Yes the queen removed the mystery. It was much scarier when it was a machine civilization roaming our galaxy for billions of years potentially. It was much more chilling and disturbing to have this cube entity roaming the galaxy. No explanations. Its better to not have any explanation about their origin. A completely out of control chat GPT. That makes it scarier.

Credit where credit is due for the First Contact voice for making the Borg sound more robotic, But hands down I think the Best version of the Borg voice goes to their 2nd appearance in "Best of both Worlds" where they sound more like millions of voices speaking as one, feels like there is way more menace in their voice. Their first voice in QWho is ok, just felt like it could do with abit more work to bring its potential out and I think they did that with the 2nd voice! Actually voyager's is pretty close, it has a nice echo effect on it, feels like a close 2nd they settled on hence forth. It's still pretty good , more laid back like an ancient God that knows how Powerful it is so it doesn't need to put emphasis on its words, just makes statement of what it's gonna do to you. They are all great with different strengths, Thanks for putting the list together! ^^

I don't like how they made the borg weaker. But if you look at it from another angle it makes sense, they assimilated a lot of federation, klingon and romulan officers, which then integrated their knowledge and way of working into the collective: that's why they had drones working consoles, and that's why they had ranks after a while, changing from a hive: one collective, to many seperate collectives that are interconnected

I love how utterly clinical the Borg sound, especially in "The Best of Both Worlds." They're not posturing; they're not threatening; to do either of those things would be to imply that they care what you think; they do not. They're just telling you how things are going to be, and advising you not to waste too many future drones trying to resist them. And, more than that, on the few occasions when you can actually manage to talk to them face to "face," it's clear that there's no malice behind it. Indeed, they honestly think that they're doing what's best for you, and you're just too ignorant to understand until you've been added to the hivemind.

The thing that bugged me most about the Borg after their appearance in Best of Both Worlds, is that the writers seemed to care less and less about adhering to the whole "hive mind" "collective consciousness" thing. Introducing a queen was off-putting enough, but then in Voyager it's reduced all the way down to where a drone would have to acknowledge an "order" from "the collective" by saying out loud "we understand"? I mean... what? So being part of a collective consciousness just means you have a voice in your head giving you orders, and you feel really compelled to obey that voice? So many moments from that scene and onward just bothered the hell out of me lmao
