If Picard just listenes to Worf more, the Enterprise would have been so much more safe.

It's possible Riker was looking at the screen, then looked at Picard when Nagilum said Picard? And his "Yes absolutely I do indeed concur wholeheartedly" is great.

Btw there is a pretty big continuity error in this episode. When the Enterprise is investigating the hole in space, Data says that there has been no such occurrence ever happening before. Well, I’m the TOS episode “The Immunity Syndrome”, the Enterprise encounters the exact same thing. It is even described as “ A hole in space”. Pretty big mess right there.

Fun Fact: The remastered version has altered Nagilum's appearance so it looks like a truly alien face, instead of a cutout with a human mouth clearly speaking through the hole. Go find any video on here that predates the remastered version and you'll quickly see what I mean. Nagilum's eyes were altered as well.

Wesley disappeared because he had to go potty and in 1988 they still didn't show toilets in the Brady house so they wouldn't mention it in tng either. Thankfully Wes didn't have drainage problems or else there'd be a spot on his light gray outfit. That's the real reason everyone else wears black pants.

One of the few good (or at least enjoyable) episodes of season 2, in my opinion. Still infinitely better than the likes of Naked Now and Code of Honor. The sense of mystery and dread that the void (and later Nagilum) invokes are almost Lovecraftian.

The commentary about pulaski seems to miss the fact that data is utterly unique and there is nothing in the federation like him, except maybe Lore. Pulaski has never dealt with anything luke data before, and she's skeptical that he's really intellegent because he's the only being of his kind.
@jaredloveless11 ай бұрын
3:00 I am disturbed by the notion that because pulaski is in a scientific field that she shouldn't have issue with accepting data is alive. By extension, that if someone is a scientist, they should have the same opinion as all other scientists?!?! They disagree, within fields, especially with cutting edge research, there is disagreement.

I think D+ is waaaay too harsh. Yes, Nagilium is tropey and the episode is a big mind game. But Ron Jones has the perfect score for this episode. Indeed, Ron Jones’ composing is a major saving grace for a lot of Season 1 and Season 2 of TNG. (I’m unpleasantly surprised to hear absolutely no discussion of score or soundtrack in any of your reviews so far. Star Trek is quite renown for its music. But we’ll put that aside for now.) Picard has an interesting arc in this episode. He is genuinely curious as an explorer about the void up to the point when, as Ron Jones’ score puts it, they are going nowhere. Data plays and compliments that beautifully. More to the point, Data’s childlike wonderment is effective here-right through when Nagilium impersonates Data. Riker plays a contrast as a straight man/concerned for the ship. And Worf plays off of that, like how Data plays off of Picard. But Worf’s Klingon side shines here-Klingon befuddlement easily devolves into frustration. Dr. Pulaski and Counselor Troi don’t have as much in this ep, but, they have some solid hits in Act 4. And everybody except for Data eventually hits the same wave length by Act 4. The episode takes a good and fascinating turn when Nagilium kills Haskell. It’s no longer a mind game. It’s a true threat. Picard very promptly moves back from curious explorer into full blown Starfleet Captain mode. “I will not stand by while half my crew is slaughtered….[I would rather….]Destroy the Enterprise.” That is almost a perfect parrot of “11001001”: “This vessel must not fall into hostile hands.” And so we get three beautifully scored ending scenes of Picard and Riker carrying that out, Picard waxing philosophically on what’s to come, and then, Picard finally outmaneuvering Nagilium. Ron Jones’ score really hits paydirt in that last tense minute. Right until Picard says, “Abort auto-destruct sequence” you think he really will indeed purposely destroy the Enterprise. At least, I do. (“Auto-destruct” is not a trope in my book.) I urge you, respectfully, to reconsider and reassess with Ron Jones’ score. D+ is too harsh.
