It kinda seems like Keiko and sometimes others are taking advantage of Data’s lack of emotion/understanding to do their dirty work for them, such as delivering bad news. They’re using him and he doesn’t realise it.

This is my favorite "low key" TNG episode! Glad you liked it. For me it has great rewatchability, since it encompasses that homey, crew-as-a-family feeling so well, with its emphasis on everyday life on the ship and featuring almost every main character at least briefly. And I predict you guys are going to low key blow up pretty soon. ;-)

04:31 You cannot gloss over this scene! As Riker flirts with Ensign Kellog, Data observes that there may be a relationship between "sense of humour and sex, the need for research is clearly indicated." Would have loved to see Data trying out chat-up lines and "game" in 10-Forward :D

At first viewing I liked this episode. Later my best friend at the time asked me, "you don't mind seeing Romulans or temporal anomalies, alternate week after week?". Honestly, I didn't notice the "Rick Berman Effect" until late Season 5. Personally I find the concept of "Data's Day" actually holds up very well even if you remove the Romulan spy. Love Brent Spiner's narration throughout.

I really liked this episode. They made watching/listening to Data navigate humanity enjoyable while still maintaining an interesting enough B plot. I loved when he said that there's a 17% chance that Picard will follow the safest protocol lol. I also enjoy gift shopping with Worf. Lots of little moments in this one that make it rewatchable.

This episode is surprisingly well-balance and fun. Data is my favorite character, but sometimes they just take the humor with him too far, making him look clueless and kind of cringy (In Theory is a good example--fun but sometimes less is more). Little things like him not understanding Bev figuratively zipping her mouth, or needing to learn to dance by observing her feet (I enjoyed that), or his logic as to calling off the wedding being "good news," are very Data-like moments and it works here.

100% about the giant plot hole -- that they failed to detect a Romulan in the transporter. The dancing *did* go on a bit too long, but that shot of Data smiling creepily is one of the best moments of TNG.

You know I never thought of it before but the height of Starship corridors and lift doors probably figures in to the design of Ambassador outfits. The goal of the Vulcan Ambassador uniform would be to make them look imposing while also avoiding knocking off the headpiece.

@rienjen

That seems a bit unfair. The dude has no emotions--it's like someone trying to describe music when you've been deaf all your life. You can learn the notes, feel the vibrations, see a visual aid to understand, and get some sense of it overall, but the experience of hearing is a different thing. He's not stupid--for lack of a better word, Data has a handicap.

Why is there a day shift and night shift on the bridge? I get that for a human beings circadian rhythm, there has to be a real "night time". But there is no such thing as night and day in space. So the running of the ship, especially on the bridge, should be covered day and night. It's fine not to for non-essential functions, so there is a day and night structure. Do all the enemies only attack during the day shifts? Does the rest of the galaxy run on Federation day/night time? Blimey, I have thought about this and written about this far too much here!! 🤣

No one seems to be asking something the obvious - if Picard distrusts the Romulans, why not use counselor Troi for deception detection? There is a natural way of doing this without ruining the plot, as she just recently lost her powers and got them back, something like "Sorry Captain I still cannot read long-distance feelings" and explain that the spy herself was very good at blocking her emotions.

I don't remember where I heard it, maybe it was mentioned at a convention, but apparently they had just finished filming for "Thine own self", which is so Data-centric we see the rest of the crew for maybe five minutes in the episode. Brent Spiner was looking forward to getting a bit of a break, more in the background, less lines, then they switched production schedule. Surprise, Brent, the next episode will focus quite a bit on you. Here's a ton of weird lines. Oh, and you're playing 5 different characters, you better get ready for that. All things considered, it's surprising we got at least a guilty pleasure out of it.

@@thewewguy8t88 We alredy have a spoiler alert, but I love how bonkers this sounds despite being a valid piece of information about Star Trek Picard: When you think about it, if that romulan had not meddled with that main character's mind, the hippy colony would have never found out how to call the octopus. That romulan brought about the very thing they tried to prevent. I'd love ithat f it was shown as poetic irony, but with the general lack of logic, I'm not sure I can give the show that praise.

Data is the most dangerous member of the crew. It's ludicrous that Star Fleet would allow him on-board the ship, much less give him command powers. If a circuit misfires, he could switch off life support systems and kill every living being on the ship in a matter of moments.
