I still, to this very day, feel bad for the original time traveler.

Speaking of pads. I remember saying to my Dad that the pads they used on TNG were far fetched. Why wouldn't you just write things on paper... I watched this on and am commenting on my tablet. Well, I was wrong.

I had a similar conversation with my mom around 1988. Mom had just got an Internet account, after I had had one for a few years (I was a programmer). Mom said that people in the future would be sending each other email messages, buying stuff online, and gathering together to discuss their interests in groups. I said that was all nonsense because the Internet was too slow, too complicated, and regular people would never understand it. OOPS!!

I quite enjoy rewatching this episode, yes, the time traveller is annoying as hell but that's just part of his character, do we always have to have likeable side characters? Of course not:) To me this episode features an original time travel story plus an interesting dilemma about the mess the Enterprise made on the planet, I would give this one a solid B!
@Scottrick3 жыл бұрын
I think "too close to be a coincidence" means the disturbance was targeted at the Enterprise specifically as opposed to appearing at a random point in space.

It would have been funny if they had LaForge showing up to the cargo bay late, grabbing walls and stumbling around in the background but no one saying anything about it.

Consider that the crew were always on to him. This Rasmussen guy actually thinks he can sleight-of-hand a tricorder from Data. Data has superior visual acuity. He absolutely knew. They also set traps to test him. The wisest wise man plays a fool

Geordi deciding to stay on the planet lessened the stakes and made it less dramatic. Because I can't imagine anyone being under the illusion the writers would kill off Geordi in this random episode, but I can easily imagine them killing off a bunch of nameless extras and millions of people we never see if the plot called for it. Funny how fiction works that way.

Good morning! I will finish the video after I've slept, but so rare is the opportunity to be the first one to comment! You know, this was one of the earliest mentions of a 'temporal prime directive' albeit not in those words. Time travelers are almost exclusively a pain in the ass. Right up there with Q appearances. Therefore, I'd wager there might be a captain's eyes and above only dossier on these sorts of encounters. We know from Voyager that things like a Q-file and the Omega directive exist. Even if someone claiming to be Starfleet from the future, says don't put this in your logs, don't tell anyone we were here... don't they kind of have to anyway just in case its a broader deception or other ships are encountering the same thing? If nobody talks about it... time travelers could exploit them again and again. What would Janeway do? =P

Stealing from Data's room with Data present was the dumbest move ever. Data has a photographic memory and would instantly notice something missing, recall the last time he saw it and know exactly who stole it. Fortunately for Max, the writers were even dumber! 🤣

I did wonder why they had no qualms about stranding him in time. I get that he could cause chaos, but they just left him to be studied by scientists for the rest of his life. He was a con man, not a murderer as far as I recall.

The tone of the episode changed to a grim one for me once the ship disappeared. It's kind of sad to think that he's stuck in a future time, never able to go back to where he came from.

This episode was pretty interesting to me, even though the "professor" was irritating. I love how you kept referring to him as Max. Of course Beverly would be attracted to him. She's almost as bad as Geordi in the mate selection realm. I thought Picard's prime time directive speech was cool--to bad it was wasted on a total fraud. Why weren't they more curious about the original time traveling professor and his ship???

It's so strange that TNG posits a universe where they have computers that can do a bazillion operations per second ... yet, they have repeatedly claimed that meathumans can adjust things faster and more reliably than the computer can. That wasn't the case even in the '90s, when the series was made.

Yeah, not the most entertaining episode, but it was an interesting plot diversion (I gave it a C for the different plot-would never intentionally watch this again). If the time traveler writer(s)/director could have tamed down the Max Headroom character and provided a little less expectant and arrogance (not sure this is the right word here), then it would have been perhaps a more palatable episode.

For the climate control issue, it occurred to me they could vaporize large quantities of water to simulate cloud formation and force the dust to fall with the rain, rather than using the CO2 pockets. Water vapor carries the highest potential for greenhouse effect, and CO2 is the indicator for our earth for balance. Force clouds to form, dust falls in rain, skies clear, return planet to base course
