Picard was knocked unconscious by a probe, and in 20 minutes, experienced a full lifetime with a wife, a family, and in the end, the death of his planet. He learned to play the flute in that life. When the probe was opened, THAT SAME flute was there, for him, as a tangible item to prove the experience was real. It was the most moving episode of the entire 8 year run.

@@TheNerdyFlutist Thanks for replying. The moment that gets me is when Riker gives Picard the box, and he silently looks up at Riker, and he leaves. Picard opens the box, and picks up the flute, and holds it tight to his heart. In that flute was his wife Helene, his children, and his friend Betai. Picard lived an entire lifetime in the loving embrace of that probe. I also need to say that your playing is angelic and very emotional. You have a gift. Wearing a Starfleet uniform is the cherry on top. Perhaps all of our lives are nothing more than our spirit asleep in a chair, having chosen to live an entire life on this plane in a brief 20-minute span, and when we wake up, we return to who we really are: Eternal spirit beings who take little sojourns and experience lives.

I love the later episode where Picard shares his music with Daren. Knowing the context behind it you see how meaningful it is to Picard. I love folk music generally and to me this song represents the tradition and culture of a long lost civilization.

As onde of the billions of people that believe in reincarnation and that past lives are forgotten to let us focus on the lessons of this one (but still stored in our unconscious mind), I see a beautiful spiritual metaphor in this episode. It is bittersweet that by absorving the memories of a good man and a people deceased a long time ago, Picard could experiment what in this his choices denied him, like being a husband and a father with a stable life. This has to be the most beautiful song. Its not only the melody, but what it also means when you see the episode. A whole life resumed in a single flute and its melody. I just finished Picard season 3, and seeing all the crew, reunited in this finale made me cry. Cry of nostalgy, cry of growing old and seeing my favorite cast getting older as well. It also brought back memories of my younger self watching those series (Next Generation especially) and having such a pool of emotions from start to finish. Thank you for recreating this song as it was originally. I tried to find the same complete duo elsewhere but most other musicians always added something else or something more that removed its authenticity.

Absolutely beautiful, and so uniquely distinct. I remember when I was a kid I remember vividly hearing that same melody but I never really knew what it was, I asked my uncle watching Star Trek on the television set and he was telling me about all about the show. I guess as a kid I had other things going on in my mind because I forgot all about it, until recently when I decided to watch the series again. When I heard The Inner Light again, I was snapped back to that time when I was six or seven years old and I had just fell in love with it, and you play it so eloquently, thank you.

Outside of Star Trek, this piece of music is known as "The Skye Boat Song.” It is a late 19th-century Scottish adaptation of a Gaelic song composed around 1782 by Sir Harold Boulton, entitled "Cuachag nan Craobh" ("The Cuckoo in the Grove"). The original song features a composer lamenting to a cuckoo about his unrequited love for Lady Marion Ross. The 19th-century English-language lyrics evoke the tragic journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart-popularly known as Bonnie Prince Charlie-from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by British government soldiers after his Jacobite army was defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. After the British victory, William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, is widely believed to have mercilessly wiped out the surrendered Jacobites and conducted many brutal reprisals, after which he was often known to his detractors as "the Butcher." Even British sources recorded how a large number of Jacobites, very proud, made no attempt to ask for mercy or deny their involvement and met execution with great courage, some even coming forward to be killed rather than hiding and accepting the situation.
