Undiscovered Country's depiction of torpedoes during the final battle will always be my favourite. Often, torpedoes are depicted as slow-moving blobs. In that movie, they were depicted as screaming missiles. That one tracking shot of the torpedo that blasts clean through the saucer section still gives me chills to this day.

The depiction of the torpedoes yes... the lack of phaser fire to try to hit the BoP no. (And if anyone says the BoP moves too quickly a blind phaser hit against no shields would do damage)

The photon torpedo sound used in TOS .. was made by recording a steel wound tension wire hit with another piece of metal , screwdriver, etc.... recorded and then slowed down to a sweet spot. First used in War of the Worlds , it was the sound from the green lit manta wing tips, aka, the skeleton ray .... It was later tweaked for Robinson Caruso on Mars .... After that Star Trek TOS ... ! Then reused again, by this time highly modified , George Lucas still wanted a physical recording of that sound and it appears throughout Star Wars in all kinds of places ...! It's just one of the best sounds to convey a powerful bundled energy blast !!! 😁
@Rekaert
@Rekaert 10 ай бұрын
Photons peaked for me in the period of the OS movies starting with Wrath of Khan. The photons during that time had that wonderful brighter core surrounded by a strobe effect, and they hit hard. They later became less visually interesting and lost their power. By TNG, they were being fired in salvos that often did little other than reduce the enemy shields by a few percent.

The most satisfying torpedo had to be the homing torpedo from _The Undiscovered Country._ _Enterprise_ and _Excelsior_ were completely defensive until Bones yelled, "Lock and load!" Chang knew he was finished when he saw that torpedo curve. The saddest... Well, we all know what that was, and I will hear no arguments about it. 🖖

Ds9 was perhaps the most broad-reaching series from both a storytelling and philosophical perspective and the Andrew Probert refit was a work of art (I have the light up ornament on my desk right now and I have lit the warp nacelles and deflector dish in your honor). It is always good to meet a fellow believer in Jesus Christ AND a fan of insightful sci-fi. Far from closing the mind, I find that the truth of God's Word gives one the moral and logical foundations to accurately examine the full range of human experience; scientific, social, and metaphysical. @Bearmauls 2 жыл бұрын
@@tifreak8x True, but there should be a hard limit on how low you can dial it. The TNG tech manual goes over it a bit and talks about the efficiency of 'mixing' the matter and antimatter, which does make a certain amount of sense. In space, you can have the antimatter just disperse into space and it'll react gradually with interstellar dust and such. But in atmosphere? Where exactly is the 'unused' antimatter going to go? Even at minimum setting, it should still be going off like a low-yield nuke. Kilotons, instead of megatons. But a hell of a lot more than blowing up a single building and not hitting the buildings beside it :P

I assume when she made the comment that they had no way to replace them, she meant in that moment in time (and to her knowledge). Over time they would have procured the necessary materials to produce more photon torpedoes to add to their stock or developed a way to extend their supply of photons between more torpedoes.

@@JohnDiMarco Is the writing relevant to a video exclusively showing some explosions? I mean, everyone else seems to see this for what it is, you being petty. That being said, vfx is way more relevant than the integrity of the writing here, so by that (more correct) logic you should have either used the original special effects for TOS or omitted it completely. But hey, you only do this to be petty, not to improve the integrity of your compilations.

@@Bruh-zx2mc You are, of course, entitled to your own opinion. However, if the writing of a show demonstrates that it is not consistent with Star Trek, then there is no reason for me to include said show in a Star Trek compilation.

I don't understand why Paramount did not delay the production of Star Trek V when it became apparent that Bran Ferran's firm was no where near up for the challenge. The film, as originally envisioned by Shatner would have been much better. Even TNG's in house effects would have been better than what was produced. V wold have done better at the box office too with a Christmas 1989 release instead of trying to compete in the greatest Summer season of all time. I have to re-read Shatner's book to see if there is a reason why Paramount simply didn't wait until ILM or another reputable effects house was available.
