@theexchipmunk9 ай бұрын
Oh, yeah, thats a really nice detail the VFX artists put in there. I also really like the bit in Picard where the warp nacelle gets sliced off, because thats what phasers canonically do. Disruptors and phasers are pretty much the same thing, but one is less precise and more "powerful" while the other is more of a scalpel, a precision weapon that can because of this also be used as a very effective tool, not just a weapon. Fitting for Starfleet. Both supposedly work by disrupting molecular bonds, which is also why they can just vaporize someone and why outside the shields ships are barely armored. Armor does not matter against phasers because most materials you could realistically make it from are just as susceptible to it as any other, or impact the effectiveness so little the extra mass is more detrimental than the benefit of what little amount of added protection it would grant. Also why in Star Trek the bridges position isn't all that important because with the way the weapons work burying it in the ship would only be marginally effective. Especially with the power plant that uses antimatter added in, that if destabilized turns the ship into it's constituent energy and particles.

Scotty: "The best diplomat I know is a fully activated phaser bank!" Great video. If there is a "Persian flaw," it's in the description; you describe Star Trek II being the only TOS movie to use phasers as a "fun fact." A fact for sure, but not a fun one. Then again, they might have used subpar phaser effects in the other TOS movies (almost for certain in Star Trek V), so maybe we were lucky. Incidentally, many of my favorite scenes used phasers. Of the ones featured, the Constellation drawing off the Planet Killer, the Enterprise-D destroying the Bird-of-Prey, the Defiant fighting the Lakota, and Voyager finding the Vidiian ship are among my personal favorites.
@AdmiralKarelia2 жыл бұрын

@Acrosurge2 жыл бұрын
Both the Defiant and refit Enterprise used pulse phasers of one variety or another, however the sound design and visual impact helped sell the destructive nature of the weapons. Picard, Discovery, and the Kelvin timelines visual and sound design generally fails to achieve this, making it appear as if the ships are lobbing multi-colored droplets of rain at one another.
@i.r.s94942 жыл бұрын
Nor should you. Kurtzman Trek's failure to adhere to the special history and look of Star Trek is one of the many reasons why his offerings suck. Instead of honoring the rich legacy of the franchise, he and his accomplice JJ Abrams have fought to undermine it by reducing it to the level of generic space franchise. The look, and sound, of his phasers could be from one of any of the generic sci-fi shows out there. It is shameful.
@AdmiralKarelia2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, but burst phasers aren't new to Star Trek. The Motion Picture era films were burst phasers, albeit the effect looked almost beamlike, and the Enterprise-D's "antimatter spread", despite it's weird name, really just looked like they recalibrated the main dorsal phaser array to shoot pulses, like a big multitargeting turret. As for handheld weapons, the Type 3 phaser and the phaser compression rifle are seen across Voyager and the TNG movies firing both beams and pulses. There's no reason to think they're not configurable.

Its so weird seeing the Ent-D kick ass in TNG and then seeing her practically going down without a fight in _Generations._ I'm not against the ship getting destroyed in the movie, mind you. It led to that awesome crash-scene and to the introduction of the Ent-E in the next movie, arguably one of my favourite Ships of the entire Franchise. That she was done in by a lowly and outdated Bird of Prey is what bugs me. Good video, but... the 'early' phaser shots you use are from the Remastered series, where modern tech modernized both the shots and the sounds. The first time we got to see actual phaser BEAMS, they were red, pulsed slightly, and instead of the traditional whine we get today, it came out as a roaring ARRRR! ARRRRRH! Also remember that the weapon of choice in "Balance of Terror" were phasers set on proximity detonation, not photon torpedoes... mostly because the writers of these early episodes didn't know what a photon torpedo was yet. Unfortunately, the only way to find the red screaming phasers would be for someone to upload video from an old video tape of a pre-Remastered edition, like if someone were to have a copy of the Columbia House Video version which had this version. The issue is with the Remasters AND their 'Restored' non-edited variants, since the so-called non-editing is somewhat false, as my copies of these have cleaned up 'standard series' phasers and sound effects.

A shame there's no Discovery. I can understand some people's feelings towards if if you only consider season 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 took the show in the direction it should have gone from the start and made it Trek. It's still a bit melodramatic (which I kind of like to be honest) and does have some very silly odd choices at times in writing, but on the whole it feels like Star Trek. Especially season 4 with its resolution with the 10-C. It's particularly interesting to me given how much I remember when DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise all came out and people would constantly go "oh but that's not real Star Trek!" Hell, people even did that to TNG, and yet we accept them all today. But that is my opinion. This is a very well put together showcase, thank you.

Discovery is absolute garbage. Kurtzman thinks he's being clever trampling over what has come before. Including the effects for phasers torpedoes and warp effects. Unimpressed

The original series one isn't really accurate visually, since you're using the remastered animation for the Enterprise, planets, etc.

I'm convinced that the blue phasers of the TOS era are of Andorian make, whereas the orange phasers of the TNG era are of human make.

I like that idea.

@@JohnDiMarco check out Axanar........they do say in "Prelude to Axanar" that the Andorians were happy to supply the phasers for the then brand new Ares-class ships during the 4 years war which is probably why TOS phasers were blue much of the time

Now if they had only had phasers at the Alamo or Wake island.

I just realized that the refit Enterprise only used phasers in Wrath of Khan. That seems like such a waste.

Any one know what they used to make phase cannon sfx?

I've always hated the phaser sound effects in The Wrath of Khan. The TNG-ENT sound effect is probably the best, offering a little more punch than the TOS sound but coming off less grating than the TWOK sound.
