I still like and appreciate this film for what it tried to be. Despite all the production problems and things out of Shatner's control he still provided a film that felt authentic to TOS. It's all worth it for the scene with Bones, Spock and Kirk and that iconic "I need my pain" speech.

It was my first Star Trek movie! So that’s special to me. I was like, 4 or 5? I had no idea what ST was. Prior to the movie, my mom watched the, errrm *cough* 25th anniversary viewer’s choice marathon. I pretended not to love it, and went to my friend’s house where he, too, was watching the viewer’s choice marathon. We must have watched it for more than 4 or 5 hours on a Sunday in September of 91! Later that year we went to DC to the Smithsonian to see the Trek exhibit. I was Star struck! Later Star Trek V was broadcast on CBS. I think this was prior to their late night line-up. We recorded it on VHS (which we also did for viewer’s choice marathon!) Anyhow, this movie is close to my heart for the sentimental reasons of it being my first trek movie! It’s a pleasant and light-hearted soft introduction into the franchise. Oh, and I’ve carried with me that my pain is good, and I never want to lose it. We are who we are thanks to our experiences which include pleasure but also pain! Thanks for reading.
