I still like and appreciate this film for what it tried to be. Despite all the production problems and things out of Shatner's control he still provided a film that felt authentic to TOS. It's all worth it for the scene with Bones, Spock and Kirk and that iconic "I need my pain" speech.

they had to cut a LOT out of the budget and the ending was totally different from what it was supposed to be. still an interesting concept with some fun moments. could have been a ton better, but probably never more than 2, 4, or 6

It was my first Star Trek movie! So that’s special to me. I was like, 4 or 5? I had no idea what ST was. Prior to the movie, my mom watched the, errrm *cough* 25th anniversary viewer’s choice marathon. I pretended not to love it, and went to my friend’s house where he, too, was watching the viewer’s choice marathon. We must have watched it for more than 4 or 5 hours on a Sunday in September of 91! Later that year we went to DC to the Smithsonian to see the Trek exhibit. I was Star struck! Later Star Trek V was broadcast on CBS. I think this was prior to their late night line-up. We recorded it on VHS (which we also did for viewer’s choice marathon!) Anyhow, this movie is close to my heart for the sentimental reasons of it being my first trek movie! It’s a pleasant and light-hearted soft introduction into the franchise. Oh, and I’ve carried with me that my pain is good, and I never want to lose it. We are who we are thanks to our experiences which include pleasure but also pain! Thanks for reading.

This movie gets a lot of hate but its still good. It captured the "they love each other so much they can dump on each other and still love each other" relationship between Kirk, Spock and Bones better than any of the other films.

Even Shatner himself underrated this film...it's fun and thought-provoking enough. Its bounciness and stakes rival that of its summer of '89 competition....and Klingons never looked like better drinking pals. 🖖

As much as i love the Star Trek films of the 80's, this one was good and may have done well at the box office in the summer of 89 --- but this came out during the summer of Batman which was to take the summer by storm that year.

I was watching The Andromeda Strain the other day and near the end of the movie the have info on the screen from a weather satellite called "Nimbus 3". It immediately clicked in my brain the planet of galactic peace, of Star Trek V. I wonder if anyone hear knows of why they share the same name? We all the connection of Robert Wise as a director and the culture sample of the Andromeda Strain on Kirk's desk in the first Trek movie, but that was 4 movies before this one.
