I saw it as character development. Many sci fi characters do this. Example: In the show Stargate SG1, there is a member of the T'elc that started out as this mute badass, but as the show went on he became more and more talkative. The Doctor I see the same way. At first just an annoying character with awful bedside manner, to getting his mobile emitter and seeing more of the world other than Sickbay. When you see more of the world, your personality will change, and the more you observe other people interacting and you interact with them, you will develop new socializing skills. I would also add people who are isolated and rarely talk, when they feel safe can be quite talkative in sharing their thoughts and ideas. Just goes to show you how far this character has come and it really was fun watching the Doctor find himself.

@@Aeroldoth3 It's suppose to be a sign of respect to your superior officer and it is done for Admirals and high ranking dignitaries too. These days tho it's more of a Snap to it by those in charge as they demand that people snap to attention even tho some of those officers don't deserve the respect they demand. So yes some use it as a "Remember your place". those are the officers that demand you salute them everytime they see you even though Navy Regulations state you only have to salute a officer Only the First time you see them in the morning for that day, But they demand they are saluted each time they are seen. Also if you are busy to where you are unable to snap to attention or salute because of the work you are doing or the situation you are not required to but it better be a good reason. I'm getting tangential here but one of my favorite _"Star Trek_ occasionally knows what actual science is" moments was in "True Q" where Dr. Crusher was running an experiment to grow some kind of specimens, and had Amanda Rogers run it as part of her internship. Then when she got Q powers she "finished" the experiment early by fast forwarding them into full grown whatevers - and Crusher CALLED OUT that she actually ruined the experiment because now their observations are meaningless. (The only writing flaw was that a young adult prodigy doing advanced studies on a starship wouldn't already have known that...) Anyway I'm not saying Janeway needs to be running lab experiments, just something more than the typical "there is something weird going on, then they put the clues together and figure it out" that all cast members get to do.

That's a good question if it was the Challenger or the Venture who knows as it was mentioned in the Star Trek The Next Generation Technical Manual on the Enterprise D it stated that when Starfleet began development on the Galaxy Class there were 6 proposed ships to be built the first three we know of was the Prototype U.S.S. Galaxy then the U.S.S. Yamato though sadly we all know what happened to that ship in the season 2 episode 'Contagion' and the third was the U.S.S. Enterprise and another we know of was the U.S.S. Odyssey and we also all know what happened to that ship during Starfleet's first encounter with the Dominion in fact speaking of the Odyssey what if it was that Galaxy Class Starship that was seen under construction in the opening shot of this episode because remember in the episode 'Message In a Bottle' the E.M.H. of the U.S.S. Prometheus stated they were at war with the Gamma Quadrant SuperPower that the Voyager E.M.H. didn't know about so it's possible Starfleet's war with the Dominion started sometime after Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant.

@@thegrimmretails3777 That's a good thought as that Museum currator said they made that image of Voyager thinking it was a warship based on a partial schematic they had and for the thought of Mars being the human homeworld it's possible they might have had a partial part of Voyager's dedication plaque as Starfleet Starships dedication plaques do mention where and when they were built either from Utopia Planitia or the San Francisco Shipyards that gave birth to the Constitution and Sovereign Class Starships.

Funny how it's mentioned that Janeway wanted Paris as a Pilot here yet in the series premiere it was explicitly stated that he'd be an observer only. If I were to hazard a guess, I'll bet that Starfleet was only willing to meet Janeway and Patterson halfway since Starfleet would be uncomfortable with assigning him as anything more than an observer for the mission considering his track record.

It's scenes like this that make me wish Voyager got to go through a proper story arc. Have them spend a couple years in the Delta quadrant and the ship gets beaten up and then they find a way to make it back to Federation space. It's been a painful journey but they're almost home and headed towards a starbase, except when they get their it's a graveyard filled with destroyed Federation ships. Bring Voyager back right into the Dominion war and then maybe spend some time covering the after affects of the conflict.
