This movie was made for people who had seen the original TV show and already knew the characters and situations. So the fact that you were able to figure all the important stuff out in pretty short order and enjoy the movie is amazing! It's really a testament to how well-made this film is.

The reason they took a LONG time in the movie to show the Enterprise was to us Trekies SHE was as much a character as Kirk or Spock and it had been decades since we had last seen her on the ANYTHING but reruns on the small screen! As Kirk described the Enterprise in one of the shows, "She IS a beautiful lady and we LOVE her!"

Don't be watching the next film without first watching some of the original TV series or you will not understand the importance of the story. You are missing the chemistry between the main characters . And the Enterprise herself is also a main character in her own rights, hence the long scenes in space dock. It had been many years since we last saw the old girl and cast .

11:00 "He's not pleased to see _you,_ apparently." He's half Vulcan and he has embraced the Vulcan way of life. That means no displays of emotion. It's not that McCoy's presence bothers him. It's that _whatever_ his feelings, he doesn't _show_ them. One of the curious ironies about Spock.

A lot of people tend to miss an important point from this movie: That our emotions, which can interfere with our decision making and make us untrustworthy to our colleagues as well as ourselves, are also what V'ger lacks. While the television series usually showed Kirk's obsession with the Enterprise as a strength, here we see the darker side of that obsession. Our obsessions can either help us achieve our goals or interfere with them; or the goals of the common good -- but those are the risks we take when we allow ourselves to be the emotional creatures that we naturally are.

OK, here is Trek 101. Star Trek ran for 3 seasons starting in 1966. It was the story of the U.S.S. Enterprise and crew as they did a "5-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go...where no man has gone before". Captain James T. Kirk, First officer and Science Officer Spock, and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy were the 3 main characters, with Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, Helmsman Hikaru Sulu, Russian Navigator Pavel Chekov, Communications Officer Uhura, and Nurse Christine Chapel rounded the cast. Spock and McCoy were Kirk's best friends. Spock represented the Logical approach, while McCoy the passionate and human approach, and the two would always argue. In the series, after the cancelation after season 3, it is said that Kirk was the only captain to ever bring his ship back to earth after the 5-year mission. The crew received promotions, with Kirk becoming an admiral. Spock resigned from Starfleet and returned to his home planet Vulcan to try to rid himself of emotions. That was the opening scene for him, his graduation ceremony, but he failed. McCoy resigned as well to go off-world and do medical research. The Enterprise was to undergo a complete 100% refit, in honor of being the first ship to complete the 5 year mission. IN this movie, about 2.5 years after they completed the 5 years, Kirk forces his superior's hand to get the Enterprise back for this vital mission and orders his original crew back to stop V'ger, hence McCoy's comments "I was drafted!!!". The long beauty shots of the Enterprise were parts of my favorite scenes. If you look closely, there is an iridescent paint scheme on the hull where as the light moves, the panels shimmer in different colors. Absolutely gorgeous, gold, green, red, and blue paints shimmering on the white basecoat. In all of sci-fi, the Enterprise Refit is my #1 favorite ship ever. Lastly, the "portal" where the 2 people died, is the famous Transporter, tied in with the line (that was never actually said in the series) "Beam me up, Scotty". As mentioned by Scotty when Kirk beamed up to the station before the ride over to the Enterprise, the ship's transporters were down. Starfleet later tried to beam the 2 up before it was completely fixed and tested, and the deadly result was the 2 returned to Earth merged together, and turned inside out. " What we got back didn't live long.... fortunately". The two dead officers were the Vulcan science office Commander Sonak whom Kirk met in San Francisco, and according to the novels, the female officer was Vice Admiral Lori Ciana, Kirk's ex-wife. Dr. McCoy in the series was scared to death and hated being transported, that is why when he was beamed up, he was checking himself over. As others have said, if you plan to watch Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan, you MUST MUST MUST watch the season 1 episode "Space Seed" as the movie is the direct sequel to that episode. Enjoy and "Live Long and Prosper"

Fun Fact Star Trek was so big with fans the first NASA space shuttle was named Enterprise. It didn't go to space but was the testbed. Also Gene Roddenberry was a Navy man and one of the first six frigates in the Navy was the Enterprise under Captain Decatur and fought the Barbary wars. Her sistership is still active in Boston Harbor the Constitution. Since there has been several Enterprizes the first Nuclear Carrier is being broken up now and the new Ford class Enterprize is being built. The carriers are nicknamed the Big E. Except for the newest Top Gun Paramont tended to use the Big E for any movie with an Carrier in it, including one Star Trek film. They missed a crossover chance there not bringing back a topgun or Red October actor or two.

Wonderful! Thank you for trying out Star Trek. Here's some context about its universe. The original series aired 1966-69. The animated series aired for about two years in the early seventies. Both depicted the adventures of Kirk and his crew. The movie you're watching here was released in 1979. It takes place almost three years after Kirk's adventures. Then between 1982 and 1986, there were three more movies. Many people consider these a trilogy because each one continues from the previous. I consider it a trilogy. The next tv series, The Next Generation, is set a century after Kirk's adventures. It's a different crew. Both series are worthwhile. After a few seasons of The Next Generation, three other series premiered: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. This is in addition to loads of comic book series, toys, etc. It's a huge franchise.

Okay, Carol, my recommendation is to watch the entire original series (abbreviated TOS) from 1966-69. All the main characters except for Decker and Iliya were in that. There you will learn about the Vulcans, their relationship to the humans, the friendship between the Captain, Doctor, and Spock, and many points of view on humanity and the deep topics of our existence. Do this before the second movie, since it is a follow-up to one of the TOS episodes. Glad you liked this so much. When the movie came out, there had been nearly 15 years of Star Trek between the original run and syndication, so everyone knew all the characters very well, whereas you came in here cold. You did a good job of figuring things out - even appreciating the shots of the Enterprise. The ship itself was a core character, if you will, since it was the site of many stories and took the crew to the various planets, and was an obsession of Kirk's in a way. Keep with the franchise and you will understand. That is why we got such a fan service of seeing the ship in all its glory. Welcome!

The reason for the long trip around the Enterprise was to show the fans the ship. See, the original series ran from 1966 to 1969. For years after that, a new TV series was proposed, then a movie. It went on like that for ten years. So the fans had to wait for a decade to see this movie. Honestly, in this movie, you can't really get a feel for why the series was revered. In the TV show, the stories dealt with characters and situations, not just "outer space" stuff. It pitted the emotional country doctor, McCoy, against the logical Vulcan, Spock; with Captain James Kirk taking input from both to help with his decisions. It was a treat to finally have someone else do Star Trek. Please continue on. Starting with the next movie, you'll get more of a feel of the characters ... they'll feel less stiff than in this movie. I highly recommend watching at least some episodes of the show to understand everything I just said about the character interaction. If you watch just one episode before the next movie, please watch "Space Seed," which set up the movie, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Enjoyed the reaction.

Watching the original series would give you a better context of the characters and their friendships with one another. This film came out 10 years after the show, so it was a reunion movie of sorts. There are nearly 80 episodes of the show, if you don't have time to watch them all there are 10 or so that would be very beneficial for you. These would be: Balance of Terror Arena Space Seed Errand of Mercy The Devil in the Dark The City on the Edge of Forever Amok Time Mirror, Mirror Journey to Babel Trouble with Tribbles There are many other great episodes, but these stand out as being the most important ones. You most definitely want to watch the episode Space Seed before the second film.

For someone who hasn't seen anything about Star Trek, I'm happy to see you enjoy the movie. Star Trek is a show that explored space with humanity who has evolved to a more utopian state and encounters events and civilaations that stand in for the current time. It's a series of morality plays and action and adventure as well. The Original Series had more of a mix while The Next Generation pushed the concept even further. Star Trek TMP was released 10 years after the original show ended so seeing all the crew together again was great and the fly over really made the Enterprise feel like another character because she was the one we were on, voyaging through the galaxy.

Part of the reason for the extended exterior shots of the Enterprise throughout the movie is that the script was originally meant to be the one-hour pilot for Star Trek Phase Two (a never-produced second TV series) so it needed some padding the stretch it to feature length. Fun Fact: Two more Phase Two scripts ended up being made into Next Generation episodes.

So glad you loved this move. Considered by a lot of fans to be The Motionless Picture, to me it was the most Epic. Great model work, sets with scale and scope that make you feel the ship was really as large as it is meant to be. In the later movies, they are on smaller budgets and while great, feel more like TV movies vs theatre scale movies (at least to me). Watch the original series to get familiar with the crew, then jump back into the movies. Enjoy

You may want to see a few of the episodes from the original series for some more context to the general star trek universe of this era... The episode "space seed" has a few uncomfortably outdated elements to it (product of its time after all), but it does set up the second movie nicely enough

You're coming in at a small disadvantage here, because this movie presumes you've seen the series, and are thus familiar with the characters, know who the Klingons are and what the Federation is, etc. If you'd like a crash course in the Star Trek universe before you continue, here are the episodes which relate to anything that happens in the movies: -Space Seed (very important that you see this one) -Amok Time -Tomorrow Is Yesterday -Journey to Babel -Errand of Mercy, Day of the Dove (Klingons- just for context) I've left off a few of the best episodes, these are just the ones that you need to see to understand things they don't explain in the movies. You don't really need to see Metamorphosis to understand First Contact, but it makes it a little more interesting if you have.

Curious: why in the world does she need to watch Tomorrow is Yesterday? I mean, I'd encourage her to watch all of Star Trek, but why Tomorrow is Yesterday specifically? I'm thinking...slingshot?
@AstroXeno
@AstroXeno 3 ай бұрын
@@dupersuper1938 Yes, slingshot. Tomorrow Is Yesterday is only on the list because it establishes a major plot device for one of the movies. I do agree with you, that to experience the movies the way the theatrical audiences experienced them, she should watch the whole series first, or failing that, as many episodes as possible, since the movies presume you're familiar with the Star Trek universe.

I am a huge Star Trek fan and I definitely agree with all of the recommendations of everyone else, there are some episodes of the original Trek TV show that are must-watch requirements. It's so cool to see that you immediately caught on to the basic ideas that define Star Trek. Before seeing Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan, you gotta see the episode "Space Seed"!

By the way, Kirk is not usually this mean in the rest of the series/movies, it's just that he's been forced into a position where he feels trapped (for several years) and he sees this mission as a way out of that trap.

Well, first, Carol, welcome to the franchise. There's the fifth movie, but otherwise, I don't think you'll be disappointed by a _single_ thing you see, here. But, second, I would have to say that the _main_ source of _Star Trek's_ enduring popularity comes from the fact that it takes pride in delivering adventures that you just don't _get_ in other series. All too consistently, in other series, the conflict is clear-cut. One side is clearly right. The other side is clearly wrong. Resolving the conflict means making sure that the one side wins and that's that. Not so, with _Star Trek._ All too often, in _Star Trek,_ resolving the conflict means something more nuanced than that. Sometimes, we have to solve a problem for an important diplomat so they can go resolve a conflict between two _other_ parties. The _Star Trek_ universe is a universe replete with space-faring civilizations that, by and large, are good groups of people, but each is _just_ different enough for conflicts to emerge and I would dare to say this makes the _Star Trek_ universe more realistic.

22:20 "Oh, wow. That's deep. _That's deep,_ man." Now you get it. _Star Trek_ starts _out_ with a story that's just kind of _mysterious._ But as our heroes investigate and investigate and investigate, the answers have a way of just getting more and more _profound._

Oi, Carol. "Commander" é o nome de um posto (a rank), não do cargo de comandante da espaçonave, que no caso de espaçonaves da categoria da Enterprise é normalmente exercido por um oficial com o posto de "Captain". Sucesso!

Glad you liked it. This is a very divisive movie to the fans. I personally like it more than most do. However, I think it would have served you better to watch the original series before you had watched this. It would have shown you the relationship between the three main characters (Kirk, Spock and McCoy). I also urge you to watch the original series before you watch the next movie as it is a direct sequel to a certain episode from the original series. The version that you watched was the Director's cut which updated some of the special effects and added some missing effects from the original movie.

Oh wow. If you were this amazed by THIS movie (which is not all that well loved by some fans, but I really enjoy it!) you'll be blown away by the rest of Star Trek. You would seem to be the perfect audience for it, because you seem to actually have a working brain between your ears 😂 I can't wait to follow your journey if you choose to continue! This movie was my first taste of Star Trek as well. I hadn't seen any of the Original Series before this. Carol, you and I are in the minority; this is my favorite of all the Star Trek movies with the Original Series crew! 🙂 this is classic, thought provoking Science Fiction 🙂 There are like 10 other star trek movies now, you should watch them! I agree with others that before watching Star Trek 2, you should watch the episode The Wrath of Khan from Star Trek The Original Series, because it gives you background to the movie. 🙂 To me, Star Trek 1 is my favorite, 2, 3 and 4 are my 2nd favorite and also VERY good, 5 is meh (I don't hate it, but not a favorite), and then 6 is also really good! 🙂

I'm gonna subscribe because you not only got the Vulcan salute right on the first try but you called the movie "very human". Many viewers rate this one low compared to the sequel. Star Trek II is very good but very different. It's more "swashbuckling". I can't suggest more that you watch some of the original TV episodes, especially "Space Seed" before progressing further. You'll get more of the character mindsets, personalities, and dynamics which will serve to help you enjoy the movies much better.
