As others might’ve stated, Star Trek ran for three seasons on NBC; from 1966-1969, totaling 79 episodes. In 1972, the show went into syndication television and gained more of a following through its fans; called “Trekkers”. It led to an animated series that aired on NBC for Saturday mornings from 1973-1975. Attempts were made to bring Star Trek back to TV in the late 1970’s. Around the time Star Wars hit theaters in 1977, they instead made a movie; Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). They made five other movies throughout the 1980’s and early 90’s, with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) being the last film featuring the original crew. During the mid-80’s, Star Trek did return to syndicated TV with Star Trek: The Next Generation; aired for seven seasons and 178 episodes. In the mid-90’s, as the cast of Next Generation made movies, there were three other Trek shows: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise (a prequel series). They kept the franchise alive until 2005. And then about a year later, the film you’re watching went into development and was released in 2009. Well, hope that got you caught up.

Right on! But its a lot to do for a channel. She should at least watch the 6 original films. Compared to these reboots (not to say they are bad) The original films with the original actors are better. No one can replace Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley. THEY are those characters. There's more depth, character and charm. They stories are "smarter" in many ways. Like, I didn't feel much emotion when a certain ship is destroyed. But in the original 3rd, I cry every time, watching it fall to the sky while James Horner's Heartfelt score fills me with emotion. It was a character itself. You don't get that kind of emotion and depth these days. But the new ones are fun regardless.

The music in the opening battle still gives me goosebumps even after hearing it 10,000 times. So full of hope, so full of promise, so full of renewal, and blossoming, it is the music of the sun breaking through after a rejuvenating spring rain. And yet, behind it, are images of unspeakable mayhem, death and destruction.

A little tale to the party, but wanted to share a quick bit of trivia about one of the actors. At the very beginning of the film there is an extra in a brown uniform who says the line "Captian we have visual", his name is Randy Pausch, he was a University Professor and lifelong Star Trek fan who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is the coauthor of the book The Last Lecture which is a written account of the final Lecture he gave at the university before his death. The video is available online if you would like to see it, he was a remarkable man and seeing him at the beginning of the movie always chokes me up.

The Kobayashi Maru test made its debut in the Wrath of Khan. In that movie, Kirk is eating an apple when he reveals how he solved it. Nice call-back having Pine eat an apple as the test rumbles on... Fun trivia: the guy-with-clipboard is Paul McGillion who auditioned for Scotty but lost to Simon Pegg. He played Scottish Doctor Carson Beckett in Stargate Atlantis and, co-incidentally, like original Scotty James Doohan, he's Canadian but was born in Scotland. And the Romulan at the end who says 'Sir that'll ignite the Red matter' isn't the actor on screen, its Wil Wheaton, 'Wesley' from Star Trek: the Next Generation.

In the 60s, Star Trek the series on tv aired for 3 seasons. It's popularity wavered and it was cancelled. It's iconic status with the original cast (Shatner, Nimoy, ..)brought it back at the end of the 70s with a movie. (after Star Wars was so popular). Then in the 80s, Star Trek released 3 more movies with a mix of the original cast. In the 90s, Star Trek the next Gen,....and other Star trek spinoff series started and were a mainstay on television until 20 years ago. Then in 2009, they rebooted the whole thing again with this trilogy of movies.

Definitely start with the original series which aired from 1966 to 1969! If you don't want to watch all 79 of the original episodes, there are plenty of "top episode" and "essential episode" lists posted online to guide you in choosing a subset. I suggest you watch at least 15-20 episodes to give you a solid grounding in the original series' lore, characters, relationships, etc. From there you will have many choices regarding where to go next, e.g. the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" series which ran from 1987 to 1994 and is the favorite of many fans, or the dozen Star Trek movies that were released from 1979 to 2016. I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey (and get a lot of views!).

I was so pleased with the way the Star Trek reboot movies approached the divergent timelines between this "Kelvin" timeline and the "Prime" timeline of TOS and the first 6 TOS movies, and 4 TNG movies. I hope you'll go back and watch the originals at some point. Granted, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) is geared more for old TOS fans and has a pretty slow pace compared to contemporary movies, but the second movie in the series set a high standard for the rest of the movies to live up to.

Overview of the series and movies. The 1960s series is the five year mission of Kirk commanding the Enterprise with a crew. It is set centuries from now when Earth has advanced. It lasted three seasons. Aside from a short-lived cartoon series, ten years later there’s a movie depicting Kirk’s return to command the Enterprise (1979). That movie was so successful that there were three more. A new series set a century after the original series premiers in 1987 on tv and lasts for seven seasons. Meanwhile, the original crew are in two more movies. There were spin off tv series set after the 1987 series. Years later, JJ Abrams soft rebooted the original series with this film you just watched. Spock went back in time with the villain and changed history. So, this is around the time of the original series, but everything has changed.

A very enjoyable reaction. If you want to see more Star Trek, I suggest you start with the original 1960s tv series. While I don't think you need to watch the series to enjoy these movies, you'll have a better understanding of the relationships, and some of the inside jokes. For example, viewers of the original series will appreciate that, out of the three crewmen that dove down to the drill, it was the one in the red suit that was killed.

It wouldn't have been my 1st choice (though I'm a big fan of the Abram's films) but it's not necessarily bad. She'll get a bit spoiled after the 2nd film, of course, but worse things have happened. Also the Abrams films sort of low key anticipate the viewers have a pre-existing familiarity with the source material, imo, but they still will work w/o that, I should think. Unrelated but I really love Millie's glasses.

Its an interesting debate on whether to recommend the 2009 film to a new comer to the ST franchise, or to recommend the OST TV series, or perhaps the 1979 ST Motion Picture which was the first film in the series before the 2009 reboot. I was rather surprised that this received a consensus or majority recommendation. But I can see some of the argument because new comers might be put off of the low budget TV series, and the ST MP was not the best film of the franchise by any stretch. Modern viewers are used to big budget high tech action films so I can see why the 2009 film was recommended even though the modern viewer is not getting the great experience of seeing the original actors playing these iconic characters (except for Spock of course). So I think Millie did receive a great introduction to these characters based on the inherent acting and technical strength of the 2009 reboot (not unlike 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is a great introduction to that 56 yo franchise).
