@@cleekmaker00Yeah, totally. These new films dont show WHY there is a fanbase to begin with. Its the allegory, the philosophy, the class, the drama, and character development. Plus, using science as a tool to solve problems. These have none of that. So its very shallow.

The older Spock is the original Spock from the 1960s series. All of the main characters were created in the 1960s.

As others might’ve stated, Star Trek ran for three seasons on NBC; from 1966-1969, totaling 79 episodes. In 1972, the show went into syndication television and gained more of a following through its fans; called “Trekkers”. It led to an animated series that aired on NBC for Saturday mornings from 1973-1975. Attempts were made to bring Star Trek back to TV in the late 1970’s. Around the time Star Wars hit theaters in 1977, they instead made a movie; Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). They made five other movies throughout the 1980’s and early 90’s, with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) being the last film featuring the original crew. During the mid-80’s, Star Trek did return to syndicated TV with Star Trek: The Next Generation; aired for seven seasons and 178 episodes. In the mid-90’s, as the cast of Next Generation made movies, there were three other Trek shows: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise (a prequel series). They kept the franchise alive until 2005. And then about a year later, the film you’re watching went into development and was released in 2009. Well, hope that got you caught up.

Right on! But its a lot to do for a channel. She should at least watch the 6 original films. Compared to these reboots (not to say they are bad) The original films with the original actors are better. No one can replace Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley. THEY are those characters. There's more depth, character and charm. They stories are "smarter" in many ways. Like, I didn't feel much emotion when a certain ship is destroyed. But in the original 3rd, I cry every time, watching it fall to the sky while James Horner's Heartfelt score fills me with emotion. It was a character itself. You don't get that kind of emotion and depth these days. But the new ones are fun regardless.

Star Trek has tons of history, many spin off shows, animated series. In this sci fi universe anything is possible which make for unexpected plot line twists. Like the one where Spock from tbe future is able to talk with himself from the past lol. Its a great series I hope you enjoy more of it!

The music in the opening battle still gives me goosebumps even after hearing it 10,000 times. So full of hope, so full of promise, so full of renewal, and blossoming, it is the music of the sun breaking through after a rejuvenating spring rain. And yet, behind it, are images of unspeakable mayhem, death and destruction.

A little tale to the party, but wanted to share a quick bit of trivia about one of the actors. At the very beginning of the film there is an extra in a brown uniform who says the line "Captian we have visual", his name is Randy Pausch, he was a University Professor and lifelong Star Trek fan who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is the coauthor of the book The Last Lecture which is a written account of the final Lecture he gave at the university before his death. The video is available online if you would like to see it, he was a remarkable man and seeing him at the beginning of the movie always chokes me up.

The Kobayashi Maru test made its debut in the Wrath of Khan. In that movie, Kirk is eating an apple when he reveals how he solved it. Nice call-back having Pine eat an apple as the test rumbles on... Fun trivia: the guy-with-clipboard is Paul McGillion who auditioned for Scotty but lost to Simon Pegg. He played Scottish Doctor Carson Beckett in Stargate Atlantis and, co-incidentally, like original Scotty James Doohan, he's Canadian but was born in Scotland. And the Romulan at the end who says 'Sir that'll ignite the Red matter' isn't the actor on screen, its Wil Wheaton, 'Wesley' from Star Trek: the Next Generation.

In the 60s, Star Trek the series on tv aired for 3 seasons. It's popularity wavered and it was cancelled. It's iconic status with the original cast (Shatner, Nimoy, ..)brought it back at the end of the 70s with a movie. (after Star Wars was so popular). Then in the 80s, Star Trek released 3 more movies with a mix of the original cast. In the 90s, Star Trek the next Gen,....and other Star trek spinoff series started and were a mainstay on television until 20 years ago. Then in 2009, they rebooted the whole thing again with this trilogy of movies.

don't worry too much about the time-travel element of the story. think of it as the "one weird trick" by the writers to allow themselves the freedom to use the original 1966 characters in a new alternate story-verse without being committed to the events from the original tv series, spin-offs and movies before it, which all happened in the same narrative universe. it's a reboot with a clean break.

Definitely start with the original series which aired from 1966 to 1969! If you don't want to watch all 79 of the original episodes, there are plenty of "top episode" and "essential episode" lists posted online to guide you in choosing a subset. I suggest you watch at least 15-20 episodes to give you a solid grounding in the original series' lore, characters, relationships, etc. From there you will have many choices regarding where to go next, e.g. the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" series which ran from 1987 to 1994 and is the favorite of many fans, or the dozen Star Trek movies that were released from 1979 to 2016. I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey (and get a lot of views!).

Romulans have green blood because they are copper based blood cells as opposed to humans with iron based blood. Klingons have purple blood, just don't know what metal causes that. I'd love to see you watch the original series (1966-1969) the the original 6 films. Then go onto the Next Generation (1987-1994) and it's four films. I've loved Star Trek more than Star Wars because there was more to watch. Growing up all I had were the three original SW films, ST filled the sci-fi void.

I was so pleased with the way the Star Trek reboot movies approached the divergent timelines between this "Kelvin" timeline and the "Prime" timeline of TOS and the first 6 TOS movies, and 4 TNG movies. I hope you'll go back and watch the originals at some point. Granted, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) is geared more for old TOS fans and has a pretty slow pace compared to contemporary movies, but the second movie in the series set a high standard for the rest of the movies to live up to.

Overview of the series and movies. The 1960s series is the five year mission of Kirk commanding the Enterprise with a crew. It is set centuries from now when Earth has advanced. It lasted three seasons. Aside from a short-lived cartoon series, ten years later there’s a movie depicting Kirk’s return to command the Enterprise (1979). That movie was so successful that there were three more. A new series set a century after the original series premiers in 1987 on tv and lasts for seven seasons. Meanwhile, the original crew are in two more movies. There were spin off tv series set after the 1987 series. Years later, JJ Abrams soft rebooted the original series with this film you just watched. Spock went back in time with the villain and changed history. So, this is around the time of the original series, but everything has changed.

A very enjoyable reaction. If you want to see more Star Trek, I suggest you start with the original 1960s tv series. While I don't think you need to watch the series to enjoy these movies, you'll have a better understanding of the relationships, and some of the inside jokes. For example, viewers of the original series will appreciate that, out of the three crewmen that dove down to the drill, it was the one in the red suit that was killed.

Love it! It's a bit curious that Millie's fans would have her enter the franchise this way. It wouldn't have been my 1st choice (though I'm a big fan of the Abram's films) but it's not necessarily bad. She'll get a bit spoiled after the 2nd film, of course, but worse things have happened. Also the Abrams films sort of low key anticipate the viewers have a pre-existing familiarity with the source material, imo, but they still will work w/o that, I should think. Unrelated but I really love Millie's glasses.

Before you go on to the next movie in this "reboot" movie set you should, at a minimum, watch the episode Space Seed from the original series in the 60s and the movie Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan. If you really want to understand the characters and the Trek Universe watch at least the first season of the original Series (started in 1966). If you like it continue on to the second season. Season 3 in not as good and you only need watch it if you want to be a completist.

I didn't see this movie until after I killed the machine. 3. I'm an old school Star Trek TOS fan and it took me a bit to get all of the youngsters. I liked Scotty but couldn't get McCoy or Chekov. Spock, I didn't find relatable on any level with the TOS Spok until his change. Assuming that's the point. 4. The last time we see Captain Pike is in TSO "The menagerie/cage" 5. I highly recommend more Star Trek, especially "The Wrath of Khan" Realize it was made in the early '80s.

Its an interesting debate on whether to recommend the 2009 film to a new comer to the ST franchise, or to recommend the OST TV series, or perhaps the 1979 ST Motion Picture which was the first film in the series before the 2009 reboot. I was rather surprised that this received a consensus or majority recommendation. But I can see some of the argument because new comers might be put off of the low budget TV series, and the ST MP was not the best film of the franchise by any stretch. Modern viewers are used to big budget high tech action films so I can see why the 2009 film was recommended even though the modern viewer is not getting the great experience of seeing the original actors playing these iconic characters (except for Spock of course). So I think Millie did receive a great introduction to these characters based on the inherent acting and technical strength of the 2009 reboot (not unlike 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is a great introduction to that 56 yo franchise).

I think she should start with the 60's series.

The Next Generation only has Borg episodes that are good. Watch the Voyager series Scorpion episodes (2 parter) and then the episode Someone to Watch over Me.

You should check out "Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan". It's the best out of the series.

Do all the films at least, or start of with the Original Series from the 60's :)

I'll admit, you shouldn't watch any more of the new movies until you watch the old series first. Or at the first movies starting from 1979.

I think millie should join starfleet. I think she would eventually become captain of a starship.

Millie should get a Star Trek shirt. Just not a red one!

@@davers59 well millie is already a jedi knight so she could handle being a red shirt. They're not taking millie out so easily lol

Millie before you go on you should watch the original tv series first. Then the original movies. Then this alternate timeline might make sense to you

5:39 clearly you don't have kids, there's a thing where parents want to be surprised to what sex they're having so they probably didn't know what they're having because they wanted it to be a surprise

Since you started here with the new actors I suggest you just go ahead and watch the other new films with these guys and then go back to start with the original series.

With this movie they made a restart in the so called Kelvin-timeline nefore reacting to the second movie in this timeline ypu shoul watch two episodes of the origal series and two movies - troble woth Tribbles - Space Sees and Star Trek II and III. In thos there already was a link to Star Zrek II bit with a different putcone to whhat happened in the otiginal timeline. The serieses and movies are all worth to watch - only "Discovery" I don't like so much. Qith exception of the last season. I first hesittated ti watch it. But it was very good "Lower Decks" you should watch last it is "Star Trek laughs about itself" To fully understand it you must know the other sereses and also sone of the .ovies.
