That is because of the differences in who produced those sets of films. Harve Bennett was a TV guy, brought in after Star Trek TMP to clean up the giant mess Roddenberry made, who thought in terms of films while using his TV experience to cut costs. Nimoy also stepped forward as director/writer/producer after Star Trek III so between them the ensured a narrative theme through the TOS films, even during the hiccup that was Star Trek V. However, unfortunately for TNG, they had Rick Berman who was as unimaginative and bound by the 70s-80s TV paradigm as one could get whose tendencies resulted in 3/4 TNG films feeling smaller than a big-screen adventure should feel. As a consequence, all of the TNG films are one-offs, and there is absolutely a reason they feel like two-part TNG episodes apart from First Contact. Unlike the dynamic between Bennett, Nimoy and sometimes Nicholas Meyer, there really wasn't anyone that could sideline Berman's complete control. The problem with the Next Gen films (with the exception of "First Contact") is that they came off as rather average run-of-the-mill two part television episodes that somehow made their way to the big screen. In fact, I'd dare say that a number of the two-part episodes from the TNG television series were better than most of the TNG films themselves. In short, the movies lacked the cinematic WOW factor. The plots were formulaic, the threats not all that gripping and the cast (with the exception of Picard and Data) were frequently underutilized.

What was really disappointing at the time was that there were several plotlines in TNG that were left open and could've been wrapped up on the big screen, but instead we got basic tuesday night episodes. Even First Contact had a couple moments that could've been done better and I was personally not a fan of the concept of the Queen - Frakes felt they needed an actual character for Picard to converse to so it's understandable. This was done slightly better in Voyager with Seven, with one drone being the interlink between the main characters and the Borg.

The biggest problem of Insurrections is not how the story was told, nor the execution. The biggest problem is a total war between the federation and the shapeshifters was taking place while this tiny incident is happening, which the story is told in DS9. It's almost ridiculous seeing the cast of DS9 struggling with war, while the flagship of the federation is trying to find it's one missing crewmember.
@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 Жыл бұрын
Rick Berman is to blame for that. In his TV producer mentality, he vetoed any cross-over between Tv and film, and even forbade crossover between DS9 and Voyager. Berman was stuck in a paradigm from the 70s and 80s that was already growing obsolete at the time. He freely admits today that he was wrong about a lot of things.

I would also add, on top of Berman's rules, Patrick Stewart was evidently not keen on the idea of a film running another series plot. Stewart was very much throwing his weight around at this point and what Picard to be the center of storylines that allowed him to be an action hero a la First Contact.
@tenbitcomb Жыл бұрын
Hard disagree. There's very little that went right with Insurrection, and I don't believe anyone would have cared about no overlap with the Dominion war if the film was actually good. That aside, in the film, it's explained that the Enterprise had been relegated to being used for diplomacy. Wars ebb and flow, and it doesn't always make sense to concentrate all forces in a single area. Diplomacy also never ceases, even during war. Like Picard says in the first act, "[...] we need all the allies we can get these days." The Enterprise (at least the D) was designed for diplomacy, so this actually makes a lot of sense. Also, given that Worf was helping to construct a defensive perimeter in the same sector as the Briar Patch, as well as the short amount of time it takes for the Enterprise to arrive at the Ba'ku planet, it seems seems like the Enterprise isn't that far away from DS9 in case they are called upon. Even so, the story is pretty lousy. It's about a small cult of anti-technology luddites who want a monopoly over the fountain of youth. The Enterprise crew show a heavy bias towards the Ba'ku; perhaps if the So'na were as attractive, they conflict would have been treated more even handedly. Also, having Data short circuit is cliche and stupid. I doubt Rick Berman was of any help here.
@STSWB5SG1FAN Жыл бұрын
@@tenbitcomb Have to disagree with you a bit there. The Ba'ku were hardly Luddites (they had the technical know-how to sort of repair Data) and they would happily have shared the planet with anyone, they just liked being where they were. @sadako24 Жыл бұрын
I feel the problem with the TNG movies compared to the Original Cast movies boils down to that the Original Cast films had an important story to tell. The story of what happened to Kirk and Spock after their TV show was ended so prematurely. Furthermore there was a long wilderness period to really think through what the continuation of their story might look like and how to translate it to the big screen and the 1980s era. The first four films had to carry the torch of the Star Trek story. They took risks and left imponderables that turned into a multi-film arc. The fifth film perhaps stumbled because there was a question of potential redundancy to the TOS movies now that a new Star Trek series was on TV. The films no longer felt so vital. The sixth film discovered a certain purpose in being the final closer to the story of Kirk's time. By contrast, when The Next Generation ended as a TV show it had clocked up seven seasons, and arguably had wrapped nicely on All Good Things. So what was left for the films to be about? Generations I guess did the kind of bridge between old and new that made it feel it was offering something new and different to the TV show and different to any film before. To be honest they could've ended the film series there and had it be a one-off final ride for Picard & crew , and it'd feel oddly fitting. Though by my reckoning it made a mistake in destroying the Enterprise D so early into the film run (infact that's part of the reason First Contact wasn't as effective as it could've been. It would've meant far more to see the Enterprise being infiltrated and corrupted by the Borg, if it was a ship we knew well by that point, but we'd barely been introduced to it - likewise it would've meant more when Picard is being asked to sacrifice the ship). First Contact I guess had some purpose to it in that the Borg threat were one of the few loose ends left hanging after TNG ended, and we'd never seen them on the big screen before so it was worth doing for that. But still there wasn't the same sense of careful deliberation. These films were coming out pretty fast when the other TV shows were still in production. Which is kind of the other problem. Suddenly all the exciting stuff was happening in the TV shows. Voyager was travelling through Borg space now, whilst DS9 was deep (no pun intended) into the Dominion war. The odd thing is that the last two TNG movies allude to the Dominion war business but seem unable to be involved directly with it. There seems the feeling it'd be too deep into the TV show's arc to translate to a mass audience, but it means that the films weren't really able to offer anything big that the TV shows couldn't deliver. Another thing that nags me a bit is the way the makers seemed to become immediately ashamed of Generations even though it was the truest film to the spirit of the TNG series, and so they just seemed to overcompensate by making the films big action comedy films, which just doesn't really suit the thoughtful Picard or his crew, and came off as a bit desperate. (I'm not saying I'm one of those fans who objects that much to Picard's more ruthless streak in First Contact. It makes sense concerning the Borg that Picard would understand that the Borg are beyond reason. But the problem is, First Contact became the formula they kept going back to) The shape of the TOS films shows a journey and growth, and a real structure to it. Even the weaker entries are kind of inseparable from the whole and play their part. Whereas it feels easy to take or leave near all of the TNG films.
@thechairman74 Жыл бұрын
You've pretty much summed up the reasons for the later ST films, especially after the start of TNG were so mixed. TOS created the greatest fan base in genre entertainment history and by the time ST:TMP premiered, it was obviously very well welcomed by them after over 10 years away. The key was that the fans were given time to miss the TOS crew. ST:G, while perhaps overly disliked in hindsight, still had some odd flaws. It was indeed too soon after the finale of the show. It seemed like the show was ended, just to allow the films to start. It felt like a commercial move, not a creative one.
@bosyber Жыл бұрын
In addition, the TNG movies also increasingly made the mistake, IMO, of being about data and picard action hero/kirk flawed copy (party bc, Stewart wanted that?), while the show was an ensemble cast, which limited their stories. (I liked data well enough in the series, by Nemesis I was glad to have him be done, honestly, and picard was a different guy, though at least in first contact he had a solid arc). Picard continued this, until the third season.
@thechairman74 Жыл бұрын
@@bosyber Yes, very true, as the rest of the crew besides Picard and Data became very much side characters who were there just to be there. It was not as close to being an ensemble cast like the series was. You had very little time spent or insight into the development of Troi, Riker, (other than their being married), Crusher, Geordi or Worf.
@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 Жыл бұрын
The problem was Rick Berman. Dude didn't know how to helm films. He was a TV guy and was trapped in the 80s-90s paradigm of TV, which is to say being opposed to serialization and long story arcs. DS9 was successful and seen as a precursor of modern TV precisely because Ira Steven Behr ignored Berman as much as possible. Whereas Berman was the right guy to save TNG after the disaster that was Gene Roddenberry's mismanagement, Berman then tried to apply that TV mentality to the films and it absolutely showed. Regarding Insurrection, and its complete one-off feel, and focus on a TV-type adventure when the Federation was fighting the largest war in quadrant history, again, Berman's TV producer mentality forbade the use of the Dominion War storyline because "Films don't borrow from TV, and cross-overs are TV poison." Reading back-stories on the TNG films, and comments from guys like Ronald D. Moore, Frakes and others, they make many references to 'grander' ideas, and pitches, especially after First Contact, that were inevitably shot down by Berman. For example, for Insurrection, writer Michael Pillar added a couple of lines acknowledging Jadzia Dax's death and its impact it had on Worf. Rick Berman eventually overruled this. In the end, the only times Berman could be moved or convinced are when Patrick Stewart or Brent Spiner used their leverage so that is why we see the TNG films as being Data heavy, as well as painting Picard as the action-hero which is something Stewart really pushed for. So there it is. The TOS cast got Harve Bennett, himself a long-time TV producer, and Nimoy to safeguard the film legacy and they did a good job by combining the best of TV production, with film's grander stage. Conversely, Berman brought the worst of ossified, middling aspects of TV production (which, one points out, were becoming obsolete even back then) to the TNG films that shrank the big-screen into TV style adventures.
@nagger8216 Жыл бұрын
That's honestly a shame, the idea of the DS9 crew teaming up with the Enterprise to take on the Borg would've been an unprecedented moment in cinematic history (not even exaggerating). Star Trek already had an MCU-esque cinematic universe under its belt, building up multiple characters and storylines for years, they just never bothered to put all the pieces together and thus missed out on a massive opportunity. It's funny how adamant Rick Berman was that there shouldn't be much continuity in the movies or crossovers between the TV series and movies when he would've been way ahead of the game.

Soran wants to get back into the Nexus, but instead of just flying a ship into it (which we know would work because thats how he originally tasted it the first time when we see his ship get engulfed by the Nexus at the start of the movie) he instead decides to go through the much more convoluted plan of forcing the Nexus to change direction.

He chooses to go back to about 10 minutes before the trilithium missile is fired with another old guy in tow to try punching again? Guinan, please tell him he can take a minute to think about this and consider his options. Maybe show up in the Veridian system a day earlier and fire a dozen torpedoes at Soren's launcher? Maybe take Soren into custody before he destroys the first star, so Geordi is never kidnapped and the Duras sisters never get the Enterprise's shield modulation frequency (admittedly, he may not know the Enterprise was destroyed in the time between beaming down and getting caught in the Nexus, but he should still not want to let Geordi get kidnapped and tortured). I like it but even First Contact wasn't really a great premise as Picard had dealt with his borg issues in the series. There just wasn't a ton of things left to do with them. I think they held back too much as well thinking they would have a run like the original crew did. They could have done some big epic story, killed off a character like with Spock but then you don't have them for the next film. They were in a weird situation.
@DataLal Жыл бұрын
That's a great point, actually. TOS had been cancelled after 3 seasons, with not a lot of time to spare for character development overall, which the movies helped flesh out a bit. TNG had twice that amount of time, with 7 seasons, so lots and LOTS of time for character development. Also, TOS had a strong trio of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, with the other characters being supportive but mostly secondary. TNG never had that strong trio, it was much more an ensemble cast with a web of connections. Picard and Data had a lot of development with a sort of father-son like relationship, and maybe if Pulaski had stayed on she could have been that McCoy-like foil for Data. But Crusher came back for Season 3, and because her conflict is with Picard in a friendly but will-they-ever/won't-they-ever be romantic sense, and she's just good friends with Data, that doesn't make for a solid Captain-First Officer-Doctor trio. Riker *kind of* forms an on-bridge trio with Picard and Worf - Picard being passionate but non-aggressive and highly rational, Data being non-passionate, non-aggressive but eminently rational, and Worf being highly passionate, fairly aggressive, and not very rational. What detracts from this is that Riker has another will-they-ever/won't-they-ever thing with Troi, but you don't exactly see him banter at all with her, even though she's quite often sitting in the seat just on the other side of Picard. There's not a lot of on-bridge banter that goes on at all.

Insurrection could've been skipped entirely. Flush out Nemesis better and have that be the final TNG film. Or if it had done well then you could've made a fourth. The double whammy of Insurrection being mediocre and then a four year wait for Nemesis was the nail in their coffin.

That's the funny way of looking at it, the more serious way is that Picard took what Kirk said to heart and that's why Picard became more " _Me first_ " focused. So you either have Picard resolving a storying line that's the main part of the latter half of DS9, taking the victory away from Sisko (which fans would have HATED) OR you have to have Sisko intruding into a TNG film and stealing the glory from Picard (which, quite apart from fans hating it, Stewart would have vetoed immediately)

The original movies were an opportunity to embrace everything loved about that initial 79 episodes episodes and benefited from going to the small screen to the big screen. They were thank you letters to the fans for watching those reruns over and over. The Next Generation was a high quality television series that had a good run that didn’t really lend itself to movies. I can definitely understand the frustrations of the fans to go from All Good Things straight to Generations with the Enterprise-D crashing with a largely inconsequential reason.

star trek movies are always in a different genre, Motion Picture- highbrow special effects movie, Voyage Home- fish out of water comedy, Undiscovered country- courtroom drama, First Contact- Action Horror, Insurrection- Rom Com. They didn't build on possibilities from the series. The first two are ok. They should have had a Romulan War, with great ship fights. Political intrigue, alliances, etc. The world building and factions are set up great in TNG. Instead we get Insurrection (dumb) and the half-baked Romulan/Reman story in Nemesis. There's a reason episodes like Yesterday's Enterprise are good. Its about stakes and sacrifice.
@Pendra37 Жыл бұрын
The key problem with Insurrection is that base conflict is dumb and non-sensical. Why relocate a small village worth of people? Why harvest the special radiation belt? The planet is freakin huge. The Sona could just create an isolated colony somewhere remote. Or under the sea, like where they hid the hologram ship. Come in at night, land at the secret base, regenerate for a few months and go back to space to do their things. Instead of those weird surgeries, they could just go down to the planet in those invisible suits. The whole setup was a lame attempt to mimic ST3 The Search For Spock. Make the crew mutiny against Starfleet and go rouge with the Enterprise.

The problem was is that the only sci-fi was that characters wanted to choose to be in the Nexus instead of reality. But it was extremely dull. I don't think anybody wanted to be in the Nexus. To address the issue with "Star Trek: Insurrection:" From a fan perspective and having watched the television shows and the movies running concurrently at around this time, I believe the main issue with it was the plot. At this point in the TNG era, Voyager was still lost in the Delta Quadrant fighting with Borg and The Dominion was winning the war against Starfleet on DS9......all while the crew of the Enterprise-E was watching kids play with hacky-sacks. This is the flagship of the fleet and the first "Enterprise" to be designated as an actual battlecruiser instead of an exploratory vessel with a veteran crew who are no strangers to space combat. To not have it on the front lines during a war makes no sense at best and at worst, makes Starfleet look like blithering idiots.

I think the larger problem is that Paramount has never known what to do with star trek. When Star wars happened Paramount looked through their catalog, found Star Trek and told their creative team to "do a star wars". Combine that with Gene roddenberry's stubborn nature and you will see that the most successful Star Trek movies are the ones that were given free rein to do their own thing but also to be significantly looser with roddenberry's vision.
@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 Жыл бұрын
It was more about Rick Berman. Rick Berman who was as unimaginative and bound by the 70s-80s TV paradigm as one could get whose tendencies resulted in 3/4 TNG films feeling smaller than a big-screen adventure should feel. That included no serialization, no cross-over stories between series or series to films, and that every film, like episodes of TV, had to stand on its own. As a consequence, all of the TNG films are one-offs, and there is absolutely a reason they feel like two-part TNG episodes apart from First Contact. You mention Paramount not knowing what to do with the franchise, but back in the 1990s, Berman was in almost complete control of the franchise and that both protected it from Paramount, but also meant no one was there to point out Berman's mistakes. Unlike the dynamic between Harve Bennett, Nimoy and sometimes Nicholas Meyer, there really wasn't anyone that could sideline Berman's complete control. Berman is a very arrogant, douchey guy, who told Shatner to his face that the TNG films were going to make twice as much money as the TOS films ever did, and was never willing to cede control even when guys like Ronald D. Moore were clearly coming into their own as producers. Harve Bennett elevated TV material to the big screen. Rick Berman dragged big-screen potential back down to the TV screen.

Paramount gimmicks up any TV property they control. S3 of TOS is full of pop culture gimmicks and some Batman and Catwoman dialog. That's when Paramount displaced most of the original Desilu production staff with their own people. They did it to many series and movie series too. Brady Bunch, Odd Couple and Happy Days...they took three rather innocent sweet shows and turned them into contemporary pop culture gimmick of the week. It worked for profits as they lasted longer than they likely would have without it...but as time goes on those are the years that are lampooned as lame and stupid. Paramount did it with Picard 1 and 2. Picard 2 was a pop culture reference cop show tour through the Paramount backlit searching for a plot. Only about 2 hrs of Star Trek story was found in 10 hrs of miscellaneous dead ends. They have done it with SNW as season 1 had about an 8 out of 10 reasonably good stories for the ST context....season 2 is packed with goofy gimmicks, so only 1 or 2 episodes stand up as ST with 1 or 2 more rather weak but OK. The rest look like sketch comedy parodies.

NBC actually owned ST:TOS in the 60s. The third season was mired in an awful timeslot with a budget that was only about 1/4 of Season 2's. Ask a Star Trek fan, "What do you think of 'The Inner Light?'" You'll usually hear, "Oh, God, that's one of my favorite episodes!" Same thing for "Darmok," "The Measure of a Man," "The Drumhead," maybe "Lessons," and all the other thoughtful, well-written, and mostly non-violent episodes of STTNG. The things about STTNG that made us love it are not the things that make for a great science fiction movie, and the things people think are necessary for a great science fiction movie never really made for great episodes of STTNG, "Best of Both Worlds" standing out as an exception, although most of the space battle scenes are Starfleet getting destroyed or being used as a feint to kidnap Picard back to Enterprise. It's because movies need wide audiences, while syndicated TV shows can survive with their core followers, or they could in the late 80's and early 90's. That's why Abrams' Kelvinverse movies did so well, even though what happened in them bore almost no relation to what makes Star Trek great. They were big, dumb action movies, so of course they did well. People love big, dumb action movies where they don't have to think too hard. It's too bad, too. It could have been an opportunity to tell interesting stories with more time to flesh them out. But no mass audience was saying, "What about a movie where people from the future, travelling the stars together, run into a situation with a group of people imposed upon by their own organization? How do they resolve their ethical conundrum, balancing their duty with their ethics?" That's Insurrection in a nutshell. I think that would have been a great two-hour episode. Instead it was a mediocre big-screen disappointment.

Most of the TOS films had a thematic and cinematic element that I think was missing from the TNG films. Also, Kirk was always a suave action hero but with a thinking side to him - this lent itself to the interesting character development of such a guy getting older and dealing with his own mortality. Picard was never an action hero or a ladies man yet they tried to make him into one for the films - in my view unsuccessfully. For me ST: Generations soured everything that came afterwards because they did Kirk dirty and did not make the crossover film the grand spectacle that it should have been.

I'd say the main problem with the TNG films is the cast. TOS had the main three "and all the rest" while TNG was an ensemble cast where no one shined too brightly. Why wouldn't the Picard family home have a decent fire suppression/emergency beam out system ? Also the poor Enterprise D being taken out by an outdated Bird of Prey was heartbreaking. The Enterprise D has 360° defensive phasers and a rear torpedo launcher, even without shields the D should have been able to crush that Klingon ship. She deserved a better exit.

I really didn't like the way First Contact turned Zefram Cochran into a wacky hippie who was nothing like the serious engineer he was portrayed as in "Metamorphosis." It really didn't do justice to the character. The addition of the Borg queen was also jarring as one of the main features of the Borg was that they were all essentially identical and easily replaceable. The queen seemed like a plot contrivance introduced solely to give the Borg a vulnerability to exploit. The Enterprise E looked cool, though my favorite is still the Constitution class refit. But the Jar Jar Abrams reboot was the Star Trek film that caused me to stop going to Star Trek films. It was abysmal.

It seems to me, that the officials forgot how to tell a coherent, interesting story. In "Generations" they started with a new ship, then forgot about it and went on with a traumatized captain lost in nostalgia, ending with three old men in a fistfight. "First Contact i haven't seen till today. "Slay the Borg" is not what Star Trek should be in the first place. Besides that, wasn't Zephram Cochrane supposed to be "from Alpha Centauri"? Show us something imaginative, not a drunk old fool in a junkyard. "Insurrection" was in my opinion an insult. Only a few hundred people in danger by a corrupt admiral who could not just be arrested? And some weird and slow scenes too. After that i didn't wanted to see a Star Trek movie again. "Nemesis" i saw years later on DVD, and in my opinion it was the best of them, with a charismatic villain who wanted to survive and with Datas sacrifice. Wich they totally ruined with B4.

It was ok. Seeing Malcolm McLaren again on screen was great I've been a fan of his since I saw Clockwork Orange years ago.

Pierce Brosnan was loved as Bond. And he really was a GREAT Bond. He was just given underwhelming films after Goldeneye, although personally I find all the Brosnan Bond films watchable, even Die Another Day. Its just Brosnan only got to star in one great Bond adventure, and that wasn't his fault. He never failed to deliver in the role though and so he elevated the material. People responded to that. DAD had Brosnan, and he was a great as ever. It also had a very sexy and on point Halle Berrie. So that probably explains the huge success of DAD. It would never have been in doubt that DAD was going to be a big hit in terms of box office. Nemesis on the other hand was never going to be BIG HIT. It was ridiculous that the film got placed in such an insanely competitive window at the box office. It stood no chance.

Generations is underrated in retrospect. I think the theme of dealing with death and loss was not embraced by the public because it was a bit of an overall downer but it was actually well done. The nexus ribbon was confused in how it all worked out, though.

NEMESIS RIKER'S SHIP the USS TITAN was a new SOVEREIGN class ship which is why GEORDI was it's chief engineer & why GEORDI said : " I'LL GET THE TITAN UP TO THE ENTERPRISE SPECS ""

the problem was by the time STAR TREK : INSURRECTION came around the TNG cast were getting older and didn't look good in the action sequences anymore VOYAGER could've easily been movies plus these episodes were like movies : CARETAKER BASICS FUTURE'S END SCORPION & THE GIFT DARK FRONTIER UNIMATRIX ZERO EQUINOX END GAME and the kazon saga could've been 1 big movie with the filler parts removed CARETAKER INITIATIONS STATE OF FLUX MANEUVERS ALLIANCES BASICS 1 & 2

Generations was good and first contact was perfect I think after first contact it was hard to do any movie that would top that .

I have to disagree with you about “Generations” being “Not that bad.” It was terrible. It appears to have evolved from an abandoned 5th season 2-part script, and the Kirk/Enterprise B stuff was awful, pointless, and grafted on. At one point it wasn’t even going to be Kirk, it was going to be a holodeck simulation of Kirk, so, I mean, i guess it could have been worse, but the movie is inferior to the TNG finale. Yikes! For me, I’d been growing frustrated by Trek for a while, what with the lame first 2 seasons of DS9, the lame final season of TNG, and the lame first season of Voyager, I saw the movie and I came out of it feeling like, “dammit' they’re just taking advantage of the fans. They put out any crap with the Trek name in it and expect the fans to just shut up and eat it and not complain,” and I just sorta bailed on the entire franchise. I mean everyone was disappointed by it at the time, my opinion wasn’t unique, but, I dunno, it was the last straw. I’m told the franchise got better afterwards, but then again I’m told voyager got worse, so I really have no idea. In any event, I haven’t seen any of it. It was so long ago that my memory is a little fuzzy, so I’m not sure if I saw Voyager before or after Generations, but Generations was the point of no return, and it was the mid-90s so there was a hell of a lot of better stuff to watch. didn’t watch any Trek for the next 20+years.

To be fair the original series films were a mixed bag too- 1- poor 2-good 3-good 4-excellent 5-mediocre 6-very good. TNG: 1-good (enjoyed it more 2nd time around) 2-very good 3-ok 4-mediocre
