It explains two moments from the original movie. 1: When a trooper is moved to the side of the corridor of the Tantive IV his head doesn't drop to the floor when released. Instead he lowers his head gently, clearly still alive. 2: When Luke shoots a trooper from across a chasm in the Death Star the trooper falls and does a Wilhelm scream. Again, clearly still alive.

The term Stormtrooper didn't originate in WWII, it started in the latter period of WWI in the German Army. Sturmtruppen or Stoßtruppen means Shock/shove troops. Also the cylinder on the back of the Star Wars troopers is based on the distinctive cylindrical case that WWII German troops wore on the small of their backs to house their gas masks when not in use.

In the Imperial Handbook, they have a page with info on Stormtrooper weaponry. There is a note in the margin from Han Solo stating that, in truth, most Stormtroopers are good shots, but the blasters they are issued are inherently inaccurate, and thats why they miss.

In the old, pre-Disney canon, women weren't stormtroopers because the Empire itself was human-centric and sexist. Females and aliens who served the Empire were shunted into what was called the "NhM" career track - "Non huMan." This prejudice against women and non-humans was written in to strengthen the resemblance between the Empire and the Third Reich. In the old canon, this helped to make characters like Thrawn even more impressive - the Imperial machine wasn't accepting of him at all because he wasn't human, but through his tactical brilliance and devotion to the Empire he overcame those prejudices and rose to the highest rank possible.

Storm Troopers (Sturmabteilung) were NOT Nazi soldiers in WW2. They were the Party's street fighting thugs before Hitler became Chancellor. After that, because Hitler considered them to be a threat, their leaders were executed and they rest were reduced to sideline duties or absorbed into the SS. The name originally applied to specialized assault troops in WW1.

Also because it's harder to convince women to be extras when their face won't be shown in the film. It was a problem with the prequels where female extras would stop showing up to filming after realising they had to wear a mask or prosthetics.
