Star Wars (A New Hope) Special Edition 2CD Soundtrack from 1997;
This is the Limited Edition Bound-Book version with laser-etched CDs... back when the format was at its peak. Very classy for its time. I couldn't find any video record of this release, so I made one myself, just for posterity. I remember when this was in places like The Sharper Image, etc. 22 years ago - what a different world!

This has nothing to do with anything I'm working on. I was discussing it with someone who didn't know about these and found that there really wasn't anything on the web showing what they were. I got nostalgic and decided to pull it out. Contrary to popular belief, not everything is on the internet!

We owe you a very big thank you for your work on this Star Wars soundtrack project. I know that not all the masters are surviving, but is it possible to persuade Disney to bring back the complete scores? They’ve reverted tk the original LP masters.

Memories this has brought back about the world of 1997... the listening refs while we were working on these projects were CASSETTES. In fact there were cassette releases of them as well. I wrote the liner notes on a Mac Performa. It had a dial-up modem to get on the internet and I couldn't be on the phone at the same time. I had a pager and never imagined myself having a cell phone. No one had flat panel TV or computer screens. This was just three years after Katie Couric asked a question on the Today show... "What is internet?" It was the last shining moment before anyone saw Napster and iTunes coming and started grasping what that was going to do. This felt like "it" - shiny discs, beautifully packaged, every note of the score, physically for sale at Tower Records and Virgin Megastore. It sold 25,000 copies on DAY ONE, charted on Billboard and ultimately (thanks to Nick Redman, R.I.P.) got me a Gold Record plaque. Five years later my entire music library was in my pocket, I had a Nextel phone and an iBook. And, oh yeah, the news channels told us what the terror alert level was each day.

I have The 97 Special Edition RCA Victor release of The Star Wars Trilogy on CD great sets and the liner notes amazing Mike as always !!! Great release

I recall perfectly when we (jwmaurice79 and I) purchased this release. It was on a Saturday and I still remember it because every Saturday we used to go for the weekly spending spree together with some older and more munificent Star Wars fans. We had a fixed route in downtown Milan through a number of comics and specialty stores that usually ended in a small record store, located in a subway station right under Milan's cathedral. One of the clerks was also a SW fan and ordered this quite expensive (for the time) import for us and our friends, so we could get it as soon as it was available. Once at home we rushed to our stereo and put it on. It was glorious. Even though most of the score had already been released by that time, having all the cues, remastered (I remember the disk sounding quite good) and in exact chronological order was a real treat. And the bonus tracks! The alternate Binary Sunset, or the different takes of the Main Titles! What a blast! Then came time to put on disc two, only... it had Disc One written on it! We listened and it was indeed! Our copy of the release had two 'Disc one's! We consulted our friends and apparently all the discs arrived had the same problem. We got them returned and replaced eventually. But I always wondered since: was there a whole batch of badly packaged albums? And was there an equal amount of albums carrying two 'Disc two's?

What a fantastic release this was, and so influential in the soundtrack re-release market! Are there any plans to go back to the Original Trilogy and give them another release? - much like Superman: The Movie earlier this year? Return of the Jedi, especially, needs that treatment.

I don’t know if you will see this but is there any hope of a complete release of the skywalker saga (all 9 movies complete scores) remastered to come? The main want is the original trilogy completely remastered. Please drop a hint if you know anything.

👍 Though, after a full analysis, the only downfalls with these releases are: 1 Alternate versions of particular tracks are excluded. ("The Return Home" "The Walls Converge") 2 Several tracks overlap into each other. For instance, The ending of "The Walls Converge" bleeds into "Ben Creeps Around" and "The Last Battle" segues into "Approaching The Target" Question: What are chances of these scores getting re-released as uncut cue recordings?😕

I certainly wouldn't do it that way now. I'd prefer most cues separated, although no one ever seemed to want Ben's Death & TIE Fighter Attack separate. But ultimately those decisions are up to John Williams to approve.

These 1997 editions are still what I listen to when I want to hear the soundtracks to 4, 5, and 6. I got the latest one disc edition, which is grand, but I would always rather this very edition in your video. I remember opening and listening to the LP in 1977, and being highly impressed with the package and the superior sound, start to finish. Side 4 was especially impressive with the intensity of the brass and percussion. I must have played it a few hundred times before the first CD releases.
