Regal Robot's Star Wars Archive Collection and Replicas: regalrobot.com/custom-star-wa... (These replicas go on sale 2/15 at 12pm EST)
For the past year, Adam has been accumulating the components to begin assembling and building a Tusken Raider cosplay, so he was ecstatic when Regal Robot reached out to share their new prop replicas of the Gaffi Sticks as seen in Star Wars: A New Hope as well as The Mandalorian! Adam unboxes and reviews both these props, explains their differences, and marvels over their solid construction. Disclosure: This product was provided by the manufacturer for purposes of review.

The Totokia was carried mainly by inland tribes who fought in jungle, thus the shorter heavier club. Fighting was an important part of accumulating Mana (prestige) and one story associated with this weapon was that the point at the end was designed to kill with a blow to the head and that warriors often completed to see who could kill the most by using a measured blow which inflicted a hole into but did not crush the skull. It was ameasure of skill and courage. Vinaka Vaka Levu.

Someone turned up on the UK antiques roadshow with a Fijian war club that looked just like the wooden part of your prop. It was absolutely amazing and also terrifying to see. Made from a super dense and heavy wood it was beautiful. The owner didn’t have much knowledge of the age or purpose of their artefact, and the roadshow’s expert was almost drooling with delight at being able to hold it. A great moment if you’re interested and can find that episode.

Regal Robot makes sincere pieces of art. They not going to be used by cosplayers (for one thing, the cost is fairly prohibitive for most people). That's not a knock - though certainly a touch of envy! - but just a comment that these aren't mass-market products. That's not the market Regal Robot is in. Just for touch of expectation-management for those who may be watching this. Beautifully done, Tom and crew!

The 'New Hope' version would be of questionable legality in Australia due to the welded metal end, which could actually be used as a mace. Different regulations in each State here. Traditionally the decoration of the wooden club end was human teeth embedded in the business end and sometimes the spike could be made from whale bones or teeth if the spike was broken off (or you were someone very important). The shape comes from it being the initial stage of a Pandanus palm that is sprouting near the water, seems as they grow up they frequently fall over and the main shoot grows curved to compensate. Somewhere I have the museum catalog with details of all the sorts of war clubs used in Fiji, back in the 'bad old days'.

@@treborrrrr you can own and use anything that there's a legitimate non-violent use for (even non-firearm weapons) but if you use them in a threatening manner in public you can be arrested. For the confused americans, yes this is a weapon. You wouldn't give this to a stunt person and tell them to swing around a steel end. Feel free to cast a rubber or build plastic replica if you have to ask if this is a weapon. I don't know why this is such a hard concept. First day of fencing (we were around 10 years old), the instructor gave a serious warning to us that these were weapons. We were not to run with swords. We had to keep tips down. We had to be sure of our target, as they had to give consent to spar While having protection on (hence the visual checks and the verbalisation of En garde, prêt?, Allez). Actively we were trying to score physical touches over vitals, hence how fencing is lethal if you don't take enough precautions. Yet a large metal mass at the end of a staff, (regardless if there is a spike or not), not everyone has carbon/steel toed boots on plus there are kids who are about at this height. Just don't Adam.

3d printing tech is making prop replicas more affordable and obtainable these days. I’m currently waiting on a hand-painted replica of Majora’s Mask from the Legend of Zelda series of games that has the very realistic look of hand carved wood, but took a fraction of the time to make because it’s 3d printed and resin coated and therefore, is a fraction of the cost. Still laborious and pricey but not nearly as laborious and pricey as hand carving a piece like that.
