Kylo's lightsaber was never originally intended to have a crossguard. However, when he made the lightsaber the crystal he used was too powerful, thus needing a kind of "exhaust outlet" to allow the extra energy to go which became the crossguard. It is also why his lightsaber crackles, because the crystal is much stronger than normal.

EU is non-canon so this is automatically made moot. And we have no evidence of Kylo Ren turning on the different beams separately. Yes there is a slight delay, however, there's no scene where he turns them on separately, one without the other. And notice how his saber crackles and hisses, unlike regular lightsabers? Clearly something is very different with Kylo's home-made saber and it will probably be explained in the movies.

As of April 2014 Lucasfilm declared that ALL video games are not canon. So no, no Jedi IN CANON has used cortosis.
@ANDELE302510 жыл бұрын
Not really, it has to be used properly for any sort of energy resistance and will still be smashed/melted into bits with enough hits from a lightsaber (and no i dont count the fucking MMO as canon, Revan was a girl).
@RemnentsPasts10 жыл бұрын
flickyisland They declared everything outside the movies and the crap clone wars series and any future Disney made Star Wars products as none cannon. However an Video games released post acquisition with be cannon. But who the fuck cares what Disney do with Star Wars as the Expanded Universe Stories etc are what were approved by George Lucas himself and the only reason Disney said EVERYTHING is none cannon is because they are to fucking lazy to hire staff that know the star wars universe to avoid any glaring problems caused by cross over with their movies and events in the Expanded Universe. In Conclusion fuck anything post acquisition. Expanded Universe 4 Eva!
@Masluker10 жыл бұрын
flickyisland Ehhh, I'm pretty sure they will keep cortosis canon. And either way, I don't remember Jedi in Canon or Legends use cortosis in lightsaber hilts since that metal messes up with the energy field of the saber anyway, so using it would be counterproductive. There are some other rare and expensive metals like Phrik, that Sidious used in his saber, but they are really rare so most Jedi didn't use them. Not to mention that they didn't need to, since only Jedi use lightsabers and why would you need to protect yourself against a fellow Jedi, right?
@ArturoPR8410 жыл бұрын
Masluker I believe the more simple reason for keeping cortosis is the visual effect its going to have at some point this time the big Wow moment of the trailer was the cross guard I wouldn't be surprised that in future movie future hero or villain will use a cortosis armor probably glove and I wouldn't be surprised they have that person in a scene where they essentially stop a light saber with their gloved hands and since most moviegoers haven't even heard of the stuff they will be easily impressed

What if the new Sith Lord will use it more for attack than defense? If you've seen Kingdom of Heaven, you'll propably remember that a sword isn't only made of the blade. If you block an opponents attack with that sword and turn it a little bit around, the crossguard will directly hit your opponents face and the duel ends.

+Steven Stone Preety sure that if you finger the guard in a lightsaber, you won't finger anything else..ever..same goes for lots of other longsword techniques, like half-swording, woman's guard, or the thing where you use the pommel like a hammerhead ^^...so, mechanics are entirely different..
@ArnandKularajah9 жыл бұрын
+Will Gravis I'm pretty sure you can do Posta di Donna just fine with a lightsaber with cross guards. I'm just waiting for Kylo Ren to parry and then hilt-punch a jedi through the head with the cross guard. Or maybe trap the the Jedi's lightsaber across the angle, like you would do with a main gauche.
@willgravis38049 жыл бұрын
Arnand Kularajah Im preety sure you touch your blade to your shoulder while in Woman's Pose. Even if I know the technique in fault, i know for a fact it is extremely close to your body. 1:11 if I were to fix this, I think I'd try to make the casing out of specially forged Beskar. That way, the saber's design flaw would be wiped away given that Beskar, or Mandalorian Steel, is highly resistant to Lightsaber beams. I mean, it's plenty heavier, but it also guarantees that the actual body can't be destroyed in combat with another Force User with a Lightsaber.
@BluenosedCash758 жыл бұрын
Actually, the "cross guards" are exhaust ports. Notice how Kylo Ren's lightsaber crackles? That's because it's highly unstable and without the exhaust ports on the side it would explode

First, mandalorian iron and cortosis were known lightsaber and energy deflectors, so they could be used in the hilt. Also, if the beam starts before the beginning of the crossguard, then the blade would deflect. Also having the crossguard be of energy can make another attacking blade as well as make transportation easier
@sparkls4492 Жыл бұрын
Alright then make the cross guard out of mandalorian iron, and not hot plasma cause that's stupid.
@Nitronus_Prime4 жыл бұрын
There’s one fatal flaw in every previous lightsaber. They don’t have a hand guard. Most swords have hand guards, and they prevent the opponent’s sword ⚔️ from sliding down too far, but they also make it easier to block, repel, and then make a strike (in that order). Without the guard, you would be focused more on blocking/sword contact than making a successful strike. 🗡

pugmasterben I've heard that theory. I'd have to do more research on lightsabers to understand how and why excess energy would vent from the saber's "crystal" like that (assuming Kylo Ren's saber is the conventional lightsaber that we know and love).
@TheSpRiTe799 жыл бұрын
+jedder i read somewhere that the red crystals were the strongest of the colors, so i'm thinking Kylo Ren's crystal is unstable as fuck and needs a place to let out all the excess energy. His lightsaber does look different from the one Finn held, and in the toy model for Kylo's lightsaber, the crossguard portion is shown to be flickering, so that could hint that they're just exhaust ports
@fxbeliever1239 жыл бұрын
TheSpRiTe79 If crystals actually mattered then id say Mace Windu's Violet lightsaber would be the strongest, being awarded to him by his home planet or something, its rarer than other normal crystals. And if you've played SWTOR, red isn't the Strongest. :)
@jedder9 жыл бұрын
***** I think which crystal is the "strongest" lightsaber crystal is up for debate. I have watched a video that briefly mentioned how lightsaber crystals vary in properties ("Star Wars All Lightsaber Colors And Meanings" by EvanNova95). Some crystals are strong for brute combat, others compatible for force wielders. Red crystals are mostly strong in that they are compatible for wielders who use the Dark Side of the Force (from what I've heard).

Well, aside to the fact that this video is really hilarious (and it really is, thank you warp zone for making this videos) there are two points that everyone forgets. First Mandalorian Steel: this is the magical alloy that cant be cutted with a light saber and it existed in Star Wars lore long before it was bought by Dysney. And second the shape and color of the lightsaber are more related to the personality of the user than to the practicity, heck there even is a light whip whit 3 whipy things, and again, that is before Disney. But at last this are really obscure references to the comics and no one took the job to explain them. And thanks to that mistake we can have beutiful videos like this.

In the film the perpendicular bits don't go all the way round. The top quarter or so of the cylinder is removed so the saber directly hits the horizontal red part being emitted from the centre of the cross. Caught a brief glimpse of it in the film

I'm a huge fan of the original theatrical releases, and I got to see them on VHS just before George started making the stupid changes. Okay now all you FAN BOYS have to explain to me how the Millennium Falcon is able to fly?? Star Wars tech is not 100% realistic, the cross guard yells STARWARS to me, Just like the Millennium Falcon!!
@NoMeGusta25269 жыл бұрын
+3rdGenGamer you and the others need to keep in mind that they have different materials, therefore they can power up these strange shapes and get them flying. It's true, if we used the materials from earth, it would not work. Here's your weak link...... IT"S NOT EARTH!!! Nextly they Just,just,JUST showed in the video that even with the Starwars materials, that design CAN"T possibly work. Food for thought.

negative. when we see are CHILDHOOD get raped by the maker of startreck 5,,,,,, yeah we're up in arms about it. there are blueprints for the millennium falcon, showing that with their tec, it's one bad-ass heavily modded corrilian freighter that kicks ass. Now THIS SHIT STICK they have decided to insult me with CANNOT (as we have just witnessed in the vid), Even with starwars materials, even WITH starwars tec, CANNOT work. That said, the ONLY reason for this abomination is to draw in a new crowd. That's right, this saber shows that they care nothing for starwars lore, that they WILL make up there own story and break any rules to make it "cool". you see? this is no longer starwars, this is something else. It's about cool instead of starwars. That's why we are PISSED. something we have loved for so long now killed by Startreck. (sigh).

At least its not the prequels, that's how I see it, and I'm not denying that the cross guard doesn't make sense, but it is just one minor issue. Yes JJ's not perfect but at least its not Lucas. After watching Mad Max Fury Road this year I said George Miller should have been the one to direct episode 7, because it had that old school 80s movie vibe to it. But I will keep my hopes up till I see the film, maybe it will be better than we had hoped.

2 Practical Uses for the Crossguard Lightsaber. 1. Helps prevent the possibility of getting any limb cut off (as shown by pretty much all of the Star Wars Main movies.) 2. In the middle of a clash, you can turn the crossguard beams toward your enemy, injuring them and eventually leaving them open.

The reason for the cross guard if to make sure the blade doesn't go haywire. The kyber crystal kylo got is cracked so the laser is unstable to use so the cross guard expels the laser into those cross guards. That's why the lightsaber is crackling unlike other lightsabers which are slick

A Comprehensive Refutation on the Nature & Function on Kylo Ren’s Episode 7 “Crossguard” Lightsaber: The "crossguards" on Ben's lighhtsaber aren't there to serve the same defensive role that they would on real-life swords; they're plasma vents meant to vent on the excessive energy of his lightsaber as a consequence of the lack of refinement from the ancient schematic Ben used as the blueprint. I’m not in disagreement with when Kyle says: “the design was based on some ancient weaponry that did serve a purpose”. What I’m saying is that calling them “crossguards” is a misnomer. So if one could say that a crossguard could play an offensive role, a defensive role, or some other structural role, I would be saying that theses “exhaust vents” (from henceforth simply vents) play chiefly, a structural role; secondarily as an offensive role, and then thirdly a defensive role. This stands in contrast with steel-bladed swords where the functionality goes in descending order from defensive, to “counter-offensive”, and then to structural. It is because the design that Kylo Ren’s lightsaber was from the pioneer days of lightsaber technology that the exhausts have to be installed to stabilize the overpowered blade. I also agree that it was cool to see in ep.7 it being used offensively in the one way it would work in real life if lightsabers worked the way they do in canon. Many people, including Nerdist, will be all smug and will cite Steven Colbert’s supposedly fool-proof explanation. According to him, the emitter is purely accessory and if your opponents blade were to slice through that part of the sword would remain stable and not blow up or be extinguished. But there’s an obvious problem with that, if that top part of the emitter is so auxiliary & artificial, why is it even there in the first place? Why not have a “crossguard” stand alone bisecting the main blade in front of the hilt? I for one would say that it’s definitely only there because it’s necessary & presuming that the material used in that part of the hilt isn’t lightsaber-proof, it leaves you vulnerable to your opponents blade simply slicing down through the emitter, through the vents, and then through your fingers, hand, or wrist as usual. Another thing I see all the time, is that people will say that oh, if so-and-so had had a crossguard in this-or-that scene, it would’ve protected them & then things might have turned out differently. But there’s not nearly as many off those cases on-screen as they’re making it out to be. Let’s go through some of them and debunk them. When Dooku disarms Anakin in ep.2, Dooku sliced upwards which would have would the hypothetical crossguards on the wrong side of Anakin’s arm to block that strike given that he wasn’t wielding that saber in reverse-grip. The same goes for Anakin disarming Mace Windu in ep.3 and Darth Vader to Luke on Bespin in ep.5. Also note, that Dooku’s cut was made above the elbow and I’m pretty there aren’t any swords with crossguards longer than there wielder’s wrist-to-elbow length. Secondly, crossguard sabers don’t matter if you never have lightsabers on you to begin with. So, when Obi Wan disarms the Acklay in ep.2, or a disgruntled bar patron in a Mos Eisley cantina in ep.4, or the “One-Arm” Wampa in ep.5 when don’t even count as cases you can use to prove that we should have crossguards on all lightsabers. I could elaborate if you aren’t convinced that the “vents” aren’t purpose-built to serve the exact same functionality as steel-bladed swords’ crossguards’. *I also have heard two things; both of which I can neither confirm nor deny are canon. 1) lightsabers blades stick like velcro on contact. 2) lightsabers have invisible magnetic wells at the base of the blades which actually serve as crossguards. **Also you’ll notice that in ep.7 even with his “fancy” crossguards, Ben still gets himself and his lightsaber wrecked. So much for protection. ***I also think that, in terms of the plot, the crossguard on his lightsaber is more symbolic of Kylo Ren being at a ”crossroad” in his destiny.
@philipt53979 жыл бұрын
New canon material explains that the kyber crystal in Ren's saber is cracked, necessitating the exhaust ports on the side to vent excess energy; it's an unstable saber, mirroring his personality.

I don't think the crossguard is as bad as they say. The main reason for it isn't just to protect yourself. even though there is a flaw where it can still cut through, you can STILL block blades from your blade. It isn't total protection but it offers some protection which is better than none. You have a risk of hurting yourself, but the main reason it works is because when you lock your blade with others, you can slide it down and burn them just like how Kylo burned Finn when they locked blades. Plus it covers a little surface area to block blaster bolts.
@highgrove85459 жыл бұрын
It's pretty difficult to hit yourself with your own crossguard. Your are more likely to hit youself with the main blade itself. And with a lighsaber grossguard you can also bash your opponent if you were to lock blades
@evanswiatkowski82895 жыл бұрын
The crossguard is actually an ancient design used by everyone who wielded a lightsaber. Because back then they couldn’t find a way to hold just one blade. So they had to put the extra vents in it for like an “ exhaust” almost
