Atari's Star Wars arcade machine is 40! But I can't show you it until we repair the arcade as unfortunately just as i'm about to film a video it all goes wrong. Can we get it fixed by the end of the video?

At the Arcade museum Seligenstadt, Fridays are also Fix It Fridays. Sometimes Saturdays and Sundays too, but you can't rely on that. That Sprint2 board looks like bad RAM (from the far). Maybe install a crowbar on that 5V circuit because 14V on the 5 is bad news. CuriousMarc got less lucky with tons of chips fried. Although I fixed similarly bad ones. And no, our Atari AR-3s don't have crowbars either.

There was definitely a proper Speccy port of Star Wars. It came with 2 tapes one with the game on and one with the Star Wars music on. This was because the game had no sound! There was even a note in the box which said as much. It was revised later on though and sound was added (just sound effects, which weren't that great). Still, visually it was a great port for the time.

Definitely Murphy's law in play there :) But it was quite interesting to see both the diagnostic process and repair. A wonderful arcade machine, that most of us arcade addicts would love to have in our personal collection (I have my top secret build my own project underway :)). Sounds like lots of progress being made on some of the old classic machines, that Sprint 2 is looking gorgeous. Two of my cabs are appearing in the Dark Mofo winter festival as part of a display. As part of the deal, I am getting 1/2 dozen CRT tubes and a pile of CRT chassis's, so lots of fixing projects will be happening over the next few months here.

When filming a CRT with a phone, I find that setting the recording framerate to 24 works much better. It’s in the corner of the iPhone, but I bet an Android phone can do the same.

Yea that works for videos like this but when I film live and move the camera it’s takes a while to catch up. It’s the nature of the topic I’m covering I’m afraid.

I was at the Arcade last weekend and played that machine several times. I promise it was working the whole time I was there! Star Wars was a highlight as I owned the Amiga port. But the real thing in the atmosphere was brilliant. Such a good game and it was amazing to see the Arcade for real and everyone was so lovely - thank you to Alex and Holly who were there that day.

Amazing video. I loved the sit in cockpit version when I was a kid. I obviously still had the bug as I now have the Arcade1up version which is way smaller than the original but still a great piece of kit. I was gonna donate as I can’t get to you but you don’t have the SuperThanks enabled. Keep up the epic work keeping alive the old classics. Star Wars is probably my all time favourite arcade machine with Spy Hunter and Dragons Lair after. I also had Starstrike on the Spectrum which was amazing, how did they get away with it as it wasn’t licensed and was basically Star Wars!

Thank you so much for your kind words it’s much appreciated. I’m not aware of the super thanks option I’ll look into it. I do have a patron if you did want to help the museum or come down and visit and I’ll give you a full tour of the retro collective. The Star Wars 1 up cabs are very impressive and more importantly they work 😂 Thanks for watching 😎👍

This was my favourite game in the arcade. Before the days where you could just put more money in to contiue your game. I once played a single game for 6 hours. Went into the arcade at 4pm and they closed the arcade at 10pm. HAd to turn the machine off whilst I was still playing. When you're approaching the exhaust port you can fire from way further back than you think. Once your missile is away you can concentrate on shooting the flak that's coming at you. It was a sad day when this was taken out of the local arcade.

As mentioned on the other vid, I used to play the cockpit version in Wight City on Isle of Wight. Don't think I ever played the standup much as never saw it much. Might of been one in the Brighton arcade down on the beach but sadly don't remember that arcade much. The Spectrum games I find funny as I have a very clear memory of them. Not because I played them as we only had a ZX81, but because I have a very clear memory of standing in the front room of my childhood home in London and finding a 48K in its case. Assumed it had come off a magazine but stood and said to myself "This is why I don't like computer games. Look at the front art work. When I look at the back it will look nothing like that". I had no imagination then :) eventually got an Atari 2600 junior, was alright but nothing special. Then eventually a second hand Master System. Then eventually convinced my dad to get a Mega Drive and then I was hooked.

5:12 Nice and clear explanation. Wish I'd gotten into electronics. Would think I would have being an IT Engineer but my excuse was I was put off it in 1994 at Uxbridge college. All because they had the old analogue oscilloscopes in our electronics lessons and I just never understood it. The digital oscilloscopes look so much more interesting now.
