Yep... I haven't seen any of the Star Wars movies before. I really fell in love with this pretty much immediately. It's all about hope! All of the characters are so great and this universe that George Lucas created way back then is fantastic. It's nice to finally put some context to these characters whose names I have heard my whole life. I can't wait to finish the rest of the original trilogy and move onto the other films! Thank you so much for checking out my first time watching reaction to Episode IV: A New Hope!
🚀 WHY STAR WARS?
I was asked to film myself watching these movies after starting my first playthrough of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on my Twitch channel in the fall of 2021, as that was my first introduction to the Star Wars universe!

Thanks for watching everyone! Post-upload, I was informed that quite a few special effects were added to the movie in the 90s and later, including the Jabba the Hut / Han Solo scene that I was talking about. I didn't know this at the time of recording this video. Though it doesn't change my opinion all that much, I still think all the special effects look decent and hold up well for an "older" movie. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to watch this video. If you choose to leave a comment, please ensure it's spoiler-free! I'd love to go into the other movies knowing no more than I do right now! 💛 Visit kaiielle.com for all links, Info, and more!

@ross mckenzie In the theatrical release the scene with Jabba (the human version with the fuzzy vest) wasn't even in the movie. It was a deleted scene until the 1997 special edition when Lucas added the first CG (horror) Jabba, along with most of the other CG parts. This version polished up most of the bad CG from 1997, but it still sticks out.

The plot point where the Death Star didn’t prepare for a small-scale assault by tiny fighters is not impossible; it happened in history. The Russians fielded a wooden biplane against the Nazis in World War 2 that was so slow, German planes couldn’t fly slow enough to shoot at it. It was the Polikarpov PO-2. There was also the Fairey Swordfish, a British biplane used against the battleship Bismarck, which flew so slowly that German fire-control predictor mechanisms couldn’t track it.

Another example. I don't remember the name, but it was a British captain at war with the Spanish. He kept doing well while not being a noble, and the nobles in the military got annoyed and gave him a broken down dinky ship... So dinky that it was below the canon line of a lot of Spanish vessels. He sunk something like twenty.

I love watching young people react to this movie. You were a delight because you knew the effects were dated and just enjoyed the story. It was basically an independent, low budget film with unknown actors. Lucas wasn't even at the premiere. He thought it would bomb, so he went to Hawaii with Spielberg and they came up with the idea of doing Indiana Jones. It came out after the war in Vietnam and people needed something to lift their spirits.

@Dayspring I would respectfully disagree...for me the greatest special effects film of all time is "2001 A Space Odyssey." Those effects were absolutely flawless and decades ahead of their time. However, "Star Wars" was a lot more entertaining and its effects were revolutionary too.
@nicholasbielik7156
@nicholasbielik7156 2 жыл бұрын
It’s worth noting that the effects were altered to include cgi when they re-released them in theaters in the late 1990s. This most notably includes the Jabba scene which wasn’t in the original film. When they originally shot that sequence Jabba was just a human, but Lucas always wanted him to look more alien, and so they digitally removed the actor and added cgi Jabba. I still much prefer the original practical effects which this film is still full of. The model work here is exceptional (seen especially in the opening sequence of the Star Destroyer chasing Leia’s ship).

Just to clarify, all of those out of place CGI elements were actually added to the film in 1996. If you were to watch the original version of this movie (which is damn near impossible nowadays) you'd probably have an easier time adjusting to the effects quality, as it's all the same. That being said, I loved this reaction. You're so charismatic! And YES C3PO is the best character! Can't wait to watch the rest of these and hear your opinions on the other films! George Lucas’ concept for Star Wars was a modern version of the science fiction serials such as Buck Rogers that used to be shown in movie theaters during the 1930s. These had continuous action and little character development to keep kids engaged. They usually started with a text roll at the beginning like Star Wars that brought the audience up to date

One thing that takes away from the impact of the movie is that reactors are watching on little TV screens. When Star Wars came out, people went to the theater, and that enormous ship at the opening...the one that kept going and going...was jaw-dropping. I just wish young people today could see the movie for the first time on a big-screen TV with a nice sound system. It's still impressive. You're right; the movie was a one-off. This movie shook a lot of things up when it came out. Suddenly, Hollywood realized you could make money off science fiction....and toys. So, they doubled down on every opportunity. You got copycat TV shows (Battlestar Galactica) and countless copycat movies, using orchestral music scores, massive toy lines, and the special effects company (also created by Star Wars creator George Lucas) became widely successful upgrading the effects of 90% of movies needing special effects. Not only that, Lucas created "THX" theatre speaker systems so people could fully enjoy his movies. It affected, story, audio effect, music effect, visual effects, genre, merchandizing and marketing for next 40 years.

The Jabba scene in the docking bay was filmed with a human actor originally, but Lucas cut it because he wanted a non-human as Jabba, but didn't have the budget for one. I saved my paper round money for a month before this came out. Turned up at the theatre and there was a huge line, one of the theatre staff came down the line counting. He got two people passed me and told the newly arriving people that there would be no more available seats for the show. Getting inside the theatre, the only seats left were in the front row. The speakers were also only a few feet from me, so the sound was really load and made the floor vibrate at times. The first scene of the ship being chased by this huge ass ship made nearly everyone I could see cringe down in their seats with their mouth open. If I remember properly, I think it held the record in my city for being the longest running film to be shown. So glad you enjoyed this classic movie

Having seen this for my seventh birthday party, I can tell you the mystery around the immediately beloved characters was a HUGE part of why this franchise had such powerful legs and was in no way a detraction. In the decades before the internet the tiny clues about the Jedi being a religion, what was farmed with moisture vaporators, how could a "Kessel Run" be completed in 12 parsecs, a measure of distance, not time, and who the Hell was Jabba who did not appear in the original theatrical cut, filled thousands of childhood hours of conversation for the initiated which was EVERY 7 - 11 year old. And also sold A LOT of Star Wars trading cards which had all sorts of esoteric clues peppered among them. It was on the cards we first learned Vader was A Sith Lord whatever the F that was!!! The mysteriously enshrined backstories are what sold us as kids. The demand for a sequel and then the anticipation for the release of Empire was like nothing I've experienced since even over all these years. The implied richness of the universe was intoxicating.

It’s wonderful that George Lucas was inspired by novels, such as Dune and Foundation’s Edge. Add to that sci-fi movie serials from the 1940s, notably Flash Gordon, comparative mythology, and histories of empires.

I saw this movie in 1977, at a drive in theater. This movie was not only ahead of it's time, it was an event. We celebrated afterwards, with a trip to the toy store, and the purchase of our inflatable light sabers. Which lasted about 15 minutes in a serious duel.

Aside from the other great comments below, I'm especially glad to meet a fan who genuinely appreciates C-3PO. He's not the favourite character of many people, but he's absolutely indispensable, and Anthony Daniels has delivered one of the most iconic performances in one of the most ungainly, awful costumes. I had the honour of meeting him once, and while not many people get his cutting sense of humour, he's a lovely man and very humble even though he pretends not to be. I've heard at least once of a very young kid who loved Star Wars but really wasn't ready for the scarier parts of the trilogy, whose favourite character was C-3PO because he's afraid all the time, and he shows that it's OK to be afraid and still belong on the adventure. That's some next-level thinking from a very young kid, and it's helped me learn to appreciate this character who I just found annoying as a younger kid. I'm glad he's at least someone's MVP because he deserves it, especially as (I think) the only person who appeared in every single one of the main saga films (and who, 42 years after stepping into that awful skinny tin can of a costume, still manages to fit inside it!).

When George Lucas released this movie he was fined by the directors guild for not having opening credits. He paid the fine from the money he made and flipped off the guild by doing the same for each subsequent movie... Do you know why they call Darth Vader Lord? Because the stormtroopers giggle when they call him Master Vader... I saw this movie in theaters when I was 17 and it first came out. I fell in love with the Star Wars universe... You'll find out how the flaw in the Death Star came to be in the movie, Rogue One... George Lucas invented more than 300 special effects for this movie. He revolutionized the special effects industry...

The grappling hook Luke pulled out was a part of the Stormtropper uniform. In universe, Luke probably just found it or forgot about until he had a mini eureka moment like, “Hey wait, I have this.” That scene with Jabba was added years later in the special edition of this movie.

You are exactly right about it being ahead of its time and amazing. I grew up in a super small town in southwestern nebraska. The one movie theater sucked. The sound system sucked. Trust me, it sucked. But I happened to be in Denver seeing my brother when SW Episode IV came out. I was a Junior in High School. Stood in line for about a block to get tickets. And then -- SHOW TIME! The Dolby sound. The 70 mm film. I was totally awestruck from the first 30 seconds. And I remain awestruck from that movie experience to this very day. Good times...

A Padawan approaches. What will she find in this whole new world? 5:02 In the background, the skeleton of a Greater Krayt Dragon. 5:57 You are watching the George Lucre edition, filled with DFX not seen in the 1977 theatrical version. 14:40 "Jabba the Hutt" didn't show up until "Return of the Jedi" (1983), so we had no idea what this Gangster looked like. 16:20 The "jump to Hyperspace star streaks" was a first for 1977 audiences. 26:51 Jedi consider Death to be a quaint concept. 30:00 And now for some "World War II"-like aerial combat. 34:35 Did you notice that Chewbacca DIDN'T get a medal? No Mary Sues were present during the production of the Original Trilogy. Speaking of video games, how about a visit to a tropical, unexplored ocean planet? As Ryley Robinson, you're the Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief on board the Alterra capital ship "Aurora," on it's way to build a Phase Gate. When that's over, you can view the unique plants and animals of Planet 4546B from a safe distance. What could go wrong in "Subnautica"?;)

This is awesome, thank you for sharing it! (oh I just read your pinned comment LOL) Just so you know, this movie as well as the other movies in the original trilogy, were touched up in 1997 for a special edition release. They added lots of special effects, and changed plenty of things. One of the main additions was the scene with Jabba and Han. That was a deleted scene from the original cut, and then redone with a CGI Jabba. BUT thats not even it! They redid the scene AGAIN in 2004 for the DVD to improve the CGI and thats what is in the version you watched. There are so many changes in the current versions of the films. Since you loved C3PO so much I look forward to your eventual reaction for Episode 9, no spoilers! May the Force Be With You!

I used to have a scale model of the Millennium Falcon that you could open up and see the interior of. Right up until the Disney days where most of the cash was subscription and film-based, along with toys that were commercially unsuccessful, Star Wars made about as much profit off of toy merchandising and books as it did with by selling both film tickets and VHS tapes. I had quite an extensive collection of ship models and mini replicas of movie sets. In layman's terms: "Merchandising, merchandising. Where the _real_ money for the film is made!" If you liked the trilogy, I'd recommend watching Spaceballs, as well.

There’s a fun little mistake around 33:40 (it’s cut from the reaction) I don’t know if you noticed but when Luke greets Leia after getting out of the X-wing instead of shouting “Leia!” He shouts “Carrie!” (Carrie Fisher plays Leia). It’s a funny little error that made it into the movie.

The funny thing about the Star Wars story is that Lucas wrote all 9 Movie episodes in one shot. It was a massive 1600 page movie script. He knew it would never get made at that size. So he cut it down to the episode chunks that we know and love today. His heart definitely got poured into this endeavor. Since he had the whole story mapped out, he made the most compelling episode first. This is why Episode 4 is the first movie in the series.

Yeah we all thought it was just a stand alone movie. I can remember a friend of my father came into town to visit for a couple of days about a year or two after this came out. They got on the subject that they had heard star wars was now called Episode IV and everyone being confused as to what that meant. I think people he knew saw the theater re-release with the new title, that's how he knew, but we had no further information. In fact I think we were questioning "Did it say Episode IV when we saw it a year ago and we just don't remember?"
