+dirtyplaya personally I felt like Ewan McGregor as a young Obi Wan was the only good actor who fit the part. For Anakins character; it was partly the lines that were written for his character that made it bad for Handen Christen but yeah, his acting wasn't the best. The Revenge of the Sith is one of my favourites. It's very dark and raw. It was the only one of the prequels which is good.

Korey was spot on. A lot of people will give this a pass just because it's Star Wars. Good on Korey for telling it like it is. That said, I thought Ridley's performance was quite wooden. Finn was overshadowed by the other characters. Oscar Isaac was criminally underutilized. Phasma was a pointless character. Rey was a textbook Mary Sue. I have more issues but they go into spoilers. I'd give it a 6.5/10. It's a movie you will see and then forget all but a few scenes.

They basically redid A New Hope to reintroduce the franchise with how we remember and love it and give a sense for the new direction. Korey was definitely correct and should've given it a lower rating. For as bad as the prequels were, at least it gave new factions, new planets, new characters, new weapons, and new vehicles. The Force Awakens copies everything, EVERYTHING, from the original trilogy and literally only changes to the names. Forget what Tommy was saying. If you like a franchise, why introduce it to new people with something bland and recycled rather than with something decent and fresh?

I have to disagree with Martin on the main villain being a bitch. JJ knew he couldn't just give us a cheap clone of Vader, so instead he's trying something different.... I love the prequels but they are a different kind of movie. Force awakens IS a secret reboot but I don't think that's totally a bad thing. The next movie will be a lot more creative I believe.

Positives: Great performances from the new cast and the older cast, fun action sequences, fantastic visuals effects, excellent writing, funny moments and the tone fits the story. Negatives: it almost feels like a remake for of A New Hope. And there are characters who don't really do a whole lot. Final verdict: 9.9/10 👍🏻

+Roy Fokker There's reusing tropes, and then there's a rehash. For me this gave enough of the new, that it allowed me to forgive the reuse of the old. The Force Awakens isn't a remake of A New Hope. It's actually a remix/summary of the whole original trilogy. Act 1 is act 1 of A New Hope. Only this time, we get to see the "bothans" die, and a stormtrooper rebel (the first time we ever see that). Act II is act 2 of Empire, only this time, instead of being in a swamp planet, we're in Han's natural habitat: a wateringhole for scoundrels. This time instead of a call for more training from the ancient tiny alien, we get a call to action. And instead of a rush to get to Bespin from Luke, we get to see both Rey and Finn, refuse the call to action. Very monomythic. Act III is act three of Return of the Jedi, where what's important isn't Lando taking down the Deathstar. What's important is the confrontation between Luke and Vader. Much is the same with the Starkiller base. Only this time instead of a son refusing the darkness, trying to turn his father to the light. We get a father trying to turn his son to the light, and his son killing him, completing his initiation into the darkness. It's basically JJ giving Lucas a lesson on how to make things rhyme, and rhyme well. And if you complain that it's just history repeating itself, history being a cycle is a theme of star wars, since the first trilogy. Even before the prequels. The sense that this has all happened before, and will happen again, permeated, the entire original trilogy.

i think Finn was the one new character who carry this movie for me. I love the relationship of Poe and Finn so much more than see Rey becoming the new "jedi apprentice" . I mean, Rey it's ok, but i think the actress was kind of bland and ...meh for me, i never feel interested in see her as the protagonist because she have this neutral and very mediocre acting in comparison of Finn who's so much fun to watch react to his enviroment and the way John Boyega give this cool charisma to this character. For me Rey was a very Marie Sue character, an inmediatly powerful force sensitive prodigy with a very stale and unflavored personality
@70swords8 жыл бұрын
Exactly how I feel. Having Rey be a hyper-competent unbeatable well loved badass in flim 1 was crippling to her character. I wanted to see her grow and develop, but she didn't. Right away she was an incredibly powerful force prodigy, insanely skilled, and knew for no reason how to use advanced force techniques. Abrams wanted to have his great escape and lightsaber battle at the end, and he couldn't come up with a rational way in the story that would allow for it. He admitted as much when he said that he wanted to have Rey meet Luke at sometime in TFA, but couldn't make it work. So he left Rey learning the force quickly, without any explanation as for why.

I can say right now, as someone who was lucky to have a father who still had the original VHS tapes to watch, the references or throwbacks as some call them, they aren't bad at all. And yeah, this is a sort of remake of A New Hope, however, they did put a great spin on it to make it its own movie. Also, Kylo Ren, one of the best villains created as of late. I don't want to give away anything, but I'll say he's a character that you can get why he's doing what he's doing. And not only that, this movie actually got a tear from me. so what was Anakin and Luke because they were good at everything too
@michaelwood95598 жыл бұрын
completely false, first while Luke is a good pilot, there's plenty of dialogue from himself and friends supporting that he is a good pilot. Rey literally hops behind the wheel of flying FOR THE FIRST TIME, and blows up trained fighter pilots... yeah ok. Also, Luke was not an OP lightsaber user, as he lost his first duel and his hand (which helps character development bc we see him fail) meanwhile Rey closes her eyes, says "the force," and beats the ass of the main villain for no reason... it takes luke 3 movies to do what she did in 5 minutes. yeah anakin is a gary sue that shit in ep 1 where he blows up the droid control thing is shit I can't even defend that but once he starts training it isn't too bad and even he gets his arm chopped off in his first major duel yunve
@70swords8 жыл бұрын
I have to agree. Having Rey be a hyper-competent well loved badass right off the bat pretty much makes her a Sue, and I hate saying that. She has a tragic life, is a loner, is great at everything, and the plot revolved around her overshadowing other characters. This is combine with plot hole ridden story and character development. Awakens gets a Matinee at best. Abrams is still a shitty writer relying on mystery and chance rather than logic. Luke and Anakin were not really Sues. They had weeks, months, and sometimes years of training under masters to become good at things. Even then they failed. Luke and Anakin lost their first duels with a master of the dark side, and crashed their ships on occasion. They relied on their capable friends to help them save the day, Luke had his life saved over 4 times by others. Rey never needed help, was extremely talented at everything, pulled an advanced force techniques out her ass, and beat a dark lord on her first try despite being an amateur. People will try to argue the details, but that is what happened in the script. Abrams wanted to have his great escape and lightsaber battle at the end, and he couldn't come up with a rational way in the story that would allow for it. He admitted as much when he said that he wanted to have Rey meet Luke in TFA so she could learn all that, but couldn't make it work. So he left Rey learning the force quickly, without any explanation as for why. If you want to know what a well rounded character with faults looks like, look at Lyn from Rogue One. She was great and believable. She saved the universe and everything that happened made sense. I give that film a almost better than sex rating.

Swordswoman it's a big problem, I just don't see how they're going to make Kylo intimidating at all, I literally lost any tension in his character the INSTANT that mask came off and showed that feathered hair with a huge nose.... then he gets his ass beat by a girl who shouldn't even have force powers yet, I thought the movie was just average, treaded WAY to much on peoples nostalgia from ANH. also the final duel between Kylo and Rey SUCKS.... it's so slow and choppy with no technique at all, the choreography was seriously lacking to me

i think you guys don't realize this is a movie that's going to have sequels. yes, they might have needed to put more effort into the villains, but build them up and then show them off in the next film. i mean, think about Darth Vader in a New Hope, he doesn't do much except one fight with Kenobi, choke people and fly in a ship. he didn't become a big threat until the Empire Strikes Back when he fought and cut off Luke's hand or when he confronted Han and the gang. you wait, the following film will have them be more badass.

People are complaining about the similarities with IV Episode but come one, JJ got a really, really, relly hard task with the terribles I, II and III Episodes. The franchise NEEDS a GOOD movie and I understand JJ have wanted to make it right. But it's true that in the next movies the director will must to be a little risky to evolve the new trilogy.

Korey is right, it was a very fun, entertaining remake of a new hope, and looking back I have to compliment George Lucas to, he did try to introduce the audience us to something different in the prequels. As long as Disney owns it, I doubt we will ever have any genuine risk in story telling , just look at marvel universe.

The ones who have not seen this, you will not be disappointed. Its worth a full price. I just saw it and its so... Nevermind. You can see it and finish it. I only say, you need to watch 4,5 and 6 to understand what's happening. Its for true Star Wars fans.. If you are, you'll be geeked up. In case you are wondering, George Lucas did get credit for helping with this film. I watched 4,5, and 6. I even saw 1,2 and 3. Those prequels damn near ruined the good things the originals were trying to make. But I loved the originals much more.

The enjoyability of the film alone makes it a full price. I agree with all the criticism and the movie is not perfect but it is good and fun to watch.

They did not reboot Episode IV here. Rey is an entirely different character from Luke. She was abandoned on Jakku and had to survive on her own. Luke was a whiny, spoiled-ass brat on Tatooine in Episode IV. And that whiny nature carried over to his nephew. Finn is a stormtrooper who broke his emotional conditioning and turned on the First Order. We NEVER had that before. Stormtroopers in the first trilogy were just cannon fodder.

Martin was a bit cruel in making fun of Carrie Fisher being old. Youngsters such as himself have clearly never been in the position of being mocked about their age.

1. according to behind the scenes info harrison ford did not want to do this movie, and disney had to back the money truck up to get him to do this movie. 2. this goes back to a story you guys covered before about daniel craig rumors. apparently daniel craig was in the movie so it turns out bond isn't too big for star wars geekdom

I was disappointed the plot was pretty derivative of the original movie and I was not a fan of Snoke's design (it was Gollum) but I thought this was a really, really well-made movie and well-acted (loved Finn). It's a movie, we as Star Wars fans, needed. I don't do the Spill/Double Toasted rating anymore; my rating is a HIGH 9/10.
