for anyone worried about finding the dice, in the core rulebook there is a chart early on in the dice section that lets you convert standard polyhedral rolls into the star wars specific results. a bit of an extra step to do during checks but if in a pinch it does work

I will always be a die-hard Star Wars D6 fan but FFG has won me over with this system. I love the narrative dice and how it helps tell the story and turns the mundane die roll into part of the story beyond simple pass/fail. While it is cool how the successes can also come with threats, I particularly love how failures can have advantages as well. In my first play of the game, I took a shot at an enemy and missed him entirely, but had so many advantages on my other dice that the GM ruled that even though I didn't hit my target, I forced him out of his cover.

Nice! Yes, I love it too.

WASD20 I am eager to see what they do with Genesis. I really hope they finally bring their board game fantasy universe to RPG land with it.

The game does look really fun, thank you for the review. My family has been looking into Star Wars TTRPGs and Force and Destiny has my curiosity.

Thanks for the review! I ended up buying it based on your recommendation. Unfortunately, I didn't see that you have an affiliate link until after I'd bought it. I'd suggest just quickly mentioning that up front then going into the full details at the end. I would have happily done that.

Yes! This is one of my favorite games. I just got force and destiny but from what I can tell fro Edge of the Empire and Age of Rebellion, it's going to be fun to incorporate more jedi and sith into it.
@YeRetroTavern5 жыл бұрын
I didn't get this one. I got the Edge of Empire beginner set and honestly the fact that it comes with a set of dice which cost $15 on their own normally was a big reason for me to get it. But like you, I noticed that yeah, that box is garbage.
@TonyPizzaPie7 жыл бұрын
I see your video. I like. Then watch. By the way I have the Edge of the Empire beginner box and I've actually played through it with 2 players and I enjoyed it very much. Narrative dice give a nice different feel from a rpg game after years of 5e. I'm thinking on getting some core books or maybe this box from your review. Thank you!

Hah, love the lightsaber ending! :-) Thanks Nate, good review. I always have mixed feelings about these starter boxes; part of the fun as a new player is creating your own character, seeing all the options, looking at all the cool skills you'll get when you level up, etc. - that's often missing when you just get a pre-gen and one adventure. Still, I suppose it serves as a good general introduction. What did you think of the "special" dice and dice pool system overall - a really good RPG idea, or just a bit of a gimmick?
@WASD207 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, Michael! Personally I really like the box sets. Even if I plan to buy the game eventually I find it worth a bit of money to get a 'staggered' entry into the game. For example, I have the game Numenera (have had the core book for almost 2 years). I've never played it. If I had the box set, however, I'd find it quite a bit easier to sit down one day and just read through the introductory materials well enough to run an intro adventure, thereby gaining comfort with the game. As it stands, I find the core book too daunting to approach running the game. As for the dice, I think it's much more than a gimmick. They really do change the way the rolls can contribute to nuanced storytelling rather than the more binary success or failure mechanics in d20 systems.
@old_geeky_Michael7 жыл бұрын
Cool, thanks Nate - that's a good point about the staggered entry, actually. Makes starting a game as a complete newb much less intimidating.

Thanks for the review. I'm curious as to how much you need to know about the Star Wars settings to GM the game well beyond watching the movies. Also, if you end up getting a core rule book it would be great if you could cover the differences between the 3 different core rule books. Thanks!
@WASD207 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need to know much. Watching a star wars movie or two would definitely help and anyone who has delved into other Star Wars media (novels or graphic novels, video games, etc.) will certainly have a leg up in terms of coming up with ideas and keeping those ideas feeling like Star Wars to any fellow fans at the table. I agree doing a comparison of the 3 would be cool. Not sure if it'll ever happen because buying all 3 would be about $180. Yikes! :) But I'll keep it in mind.

(Continued) I still loved your video. I bought the game for them to play with me. So no one is competing against one another. Personally I played the game by myself. I was the GM, NPC and PC. I didn't mind it. It would have been nice to have some people or someone to play with.

Could anyone help me out? I'm wanting to play a Age of Rebellion Campaign using the Dawn of Rebellion Era Sourcebook (Give it them Star Wars Rebels/Rogue One vibes) however, some of my players are wanting some force related journey for their characters (Like Ezra in Rebels etc) Since I've already got the AoR core book and the Era sourcebook, do I need the Force & Destiny beginner game or corerule book for the force rules if my players want to go down that path?
@SnarkyRogue7 жыл бұрын
So this is, on average, doable in a one-shot? Neat! Thanks.

I bought the Edge of the Empire starter and the box got destroyed very quickly. Just the weight of the contents made it it collapse when I picked it up.

Not surprised. I was almost tempted to move all the contents to a big ziploc.

Can you do the other versions of this? If you have them
@hadeseye22976 жыл бұрын
I would just throw that box out the window. Tokens can be useful if you use maps, or draw them if something is unclear. But personally I've never used any tokens or miniatures. And I'm not talking about online sessions.
@Qardo6 жыл бұрын
Really the box is a Beginner Game. It clearly marked as such. It is used to get new players into the game. You do not need it if you already know how to play the game. Yet it can be useful as a fun way to get into an adventure with new characters. Did that with the Beginner game for Edge of the Empire with some PC made characters. Good jumping off point.

FFG is an expensive game with way too much overlap in the corebooks. Love the system, but it is very cost prohibitive for many folks. Plus, who knows when anything will be back in print. A real shame

Now this video is simple. I liked what you said about the rules. It does get alittle intimidating. When ppl see it for the first time. Specially when the CoreRule book is introduced. Take some of my relatives. They took one look at it and said: Too many Rules. Don't want to play it. haha lol. But I still loved your video.(Continued).
