The Super Mario Bros. hack is just supposed to be the regular game with sprites swapped. Hammy probably patched the wrong revision of the ROM. When you do all hacks will bring you to 0-1, which is a Bowser castle level that has a maze path, but since it is in the underwater level type, you don't loop back around and you hit a dead end.
