Is Star Wars, Spider-Man, The Lord of the Rings, or the Avengers really meant to be "escapist" or "family entertainment"? Geeky Stoics believes there is more to it. In this video we explain the reason for this channel with a thought on Luke Skywalker's T-16 Skyhopper he received from Obi-Wan Kenobi, and what that means for the rest of us.
The universe itself is reaching out to you in your joys. The things that make you smile. We want to help you get the most out of it.

This reminds me of what John Lovell wrote about in "The Warrior Poet Way" emphasizing how fiction and movies can inspire us to become better versions of ourselves. You guys clearly understand this and have even helped me find a new appreciation for movies I’ve previously dismissed. Keep it up guys!

Appreciate you bringing up toys. Montessori talked about toys being more than just things kids play with. When they play with them, the child is searching for something. It is our job as adults, the builders of the environment, to give them toys that enrich and educate. I wish she understood the potential use of imagination for kids, and understand her fears, but find it can be used as a tool if a proper foundation is built.

Reading the Lord of the Rings inspires me to do great things and persevere in daily challenges. I think the best stories do that--they don't encourage escapism but engagement with the world.

I agree with you in every way keep going no matter what other people comment every movie tells a story, and it shows something beautiful or alive in ways words can’t describe

@@GeekyStoics I am honored by your invitation and look forward to it! I would like to get my feet established a little more first; so thank you for being gracious with your “when you are ready.” I see that you checked out my Fighting For Fatherhood video about Hook. I have a few other ideas that can be drawn out of Hook for meaningful life lessons. That could perhaps be an opportunity for an exciting collaboration. I’ll stay in touch!

Agreed! "Everyone is necessarily the hero of thier own life." -John Barth Movies give us stories with heros that give us ideals to reach for in our own hero's journey. We compare ourselves to hero's both fictional and nonfictional. Everyone, enjoy the journey!

I think the main problem is that some of these new shows that think we are a "more intellectual audience" but are so dang overt in their real world messaging. These people also have a "there is no good or evil... it all depends on what side you are on" view... they give huge massive flaws in their "protagonist" and that give us no one we wish we could be... no one to root for. Their ideas of moral relativism is KILLING modern media.

I know I have mentioned the importance of Star Wars in my life - child of a Cold War era navy corpsman, and my father, may he rest in peace, wanted me to have childhood heroes of honor and courage. He grew up with the Knights of the Round Table and Horatio Hornblower, he saw much the same in the Jedi and Luke Skywalker. That makes these stories, my Captian America comics, and the stories my father told me all the more important to me. Not so much that I will ever tell an actor that they are a horrible person, or an author that they are stupid for making a character act out of character in my opinion, but enough that, when I wonder what my father might do, in a situation I find myself uncomfortable with, I can look to the OG Jedi or Capt America and be reminded to to steer according to the principles that they held. I know some will say that makes me a bad Christian, putting modern stories above biblical ones, but sometimes those stories speak to us far better than those writen with the 'thees' and 'thines'. I'm sorry if I am rambling on. Your vid definitely struck a cord with me today. Thank you as always for them. -Sluggy

Why do we have stories? In a time before written text that's how culture was propagated. What is culture? It's that which enables us to effectively navigate the world and act in it. The archetypes that are portrayed in stories are an inherent part of our psychology, ingrained in us through evolution as patterns that are effective for our survival and that of the group. Stories activate those archetypes within us and show us paths to act on them, enbolden us to do so. That's inspiration. When Luke Skywalker looks out at the twin suns, that speaks to us - not because it's a new form of escapism, but rather an expression of something ancient that's within us all. The activation of that is what's telling us that this is something worthwhile, this is something that has led to the survival of your ancestors, this is what will lead you to optimal self-growth and benefit yourself and the ones around you. Evolution follows from the laws of the universe, which are therefore reflected in every being. Those very principles are the same ones that hold the universe together.
