The thing that really got me was that you rank up pull, push and slow as well as your immense sabre skills but you know fine well you should easily be able to use other force powers such as mind trick but you can't, it's anti lore, anti force and lazy from remedy. They did it 17 years ago, do it now ffs.

Worth A Buy honestly I just want a game from the empires perspective. That or the sith. Disney is far too “safe” though. They teach us everything is black and white. “Empire bad terrorist rebels good. “ Disney Star Wars is for people who want a short “feel good” experience where the “good guys” always win. I use quotes around good guys because the rebels killed millions and millions of people, not to mention committed multiple war crimes. Beyond that when they took the helm they obliterated all the lore, leaving everything but the main movies as “legends”. I could go on forever but I believe that Star Wars is in its death throes for the most part. I hope I’m wrong but I doubt we will ever see a game as good as jedi outcast, battlefront, or any of the other classics ever again. Disney and EA have crucified our childhoods in the name of greed.

Tbh I don't mind the limited amount of force abilities. Cal left his training before he was done and ended up with only 3 abilities, however if they do make a sequel, then they should definitely allow more abilities to be used. In my opinion the best part about the game is the lightsaber, how you find and pick your Kyber crystal, evolve your saber throughout the game and the customization options that comes along with it.

Honestly, I give it a 6 & a half. Graphics, 8 Audio, 9 Gameplay, 4 Storyline, 8 Optimisation, 4 Graphics are pretty good, has that slightly consolized vaseline smear to it, but overall pretty good. Audio is great, really nice music tracks and the sounds and voice acting is great too, I also really like the protagonist and enjoyed his acting as Jerome in Gotham so it was really cool to see him acting in this game. The gameplay is pretty boring, repetitious and filled with on rails segments or mash a single button events which personally for me I don't like, at all... There's also A LOT of platforming which for me does nothing other than drag the games run time out. Lightsaber combat while it can be pretty good in wide open areas, it is also quite clunky with the camera often being inside of your character and the inability to animation cancel parry is pretty annoying. The game is heavily optimised for use on a controller, while mouse movement feels so much better the keyboard binds are pretty awkward, double tap Z to dodge, wtf? Double tab dodge in the first place is just a questionable design choice. The boss fights are varied and you have a couple weak jedi powers you can use and you can also deflect blaster fire, which is really just the minimum for a Star Wars game. There are some really awesome design choices when it comes to playing out the story though, walking up to a door and having it close on you for you to turn around and be trapped on an imperial base was pretty amazing. What I REALLY like about the game is the way the storyline plays out for you, it's not all just cutscenes, you get to play through the story and some amazing events take place while you are in full control, I already touched on this in gameplay but the game is littered with real-time events like that. The game runs pretty bad and runs even worse in certain areas, even on top spec PCs, needs to change, badly. It's pretty good, too much platforming, on rails and mash button events for my taste but the live event story triggers are fantastic, this is a solid 8.5-9 at $40 or lower.

It's strange, I expected a horrible EA game but wanted a successor to Jedi Academy or Dark Forces, I got neither but what I did get was quite good fun, it scratches the Jedi light saber combat itch but leaves us oldies that yearn for a modern Jedi Academy kind of disappointed. I think this is a safe buy for most SW fans providing you don't mind the usual bullshit AAA trash that just seems to plague the movie industry and modern games. It has decent combat, replay-ability and a super cute droid :)

The stuttering and hitching is caused by the Origin Overlay and Cloud Saves. Turning those off fixed it for me and it runs beautifully at 1440p on a GTX 1080.

People who havent played proper classic games like Jedi Academy, Jedi Outcast 2, Portal, Half life 2, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Etc... . Games that are truly immersive. They started off on triple AAA trash like Star Wars Battlefront. They just want to mindlessly spam buttons and pew pew. I really do hope that games get back to their origins though, like we could make some really dope games with the technology we have now, games that you could never put down lol. Theres still a decent amount of really good games being made. Just not by Actibilzzard EAsoft. Its the medium sized developers that mostly create the quality content these days. I have almost no hope of a good game made from the Star Wars IP though. Even if Disney ever figures out what quality entertainment looks like, something they currently wouldn't recognize even if it had a bright neon pink label stuck on it, EA has no idea at all how to write an interesting story or create characters with actual depth. Bioware sure as hell couldn't pull off a proper KotoR anymore at least.

I gave up on the game after first Oggdo and recalling the wall run. The combat system is unchallenging. The whole story and game is so uninteresting and level design is too claustrophobic. So basically this game is all about finding your way trough the linear labyrinths which is so boring. I deleted this uninteresting lame game after 1hr30min. Don't buy it. It is a waste of time.

Mack pretty much slams this game, for numerous reasons, tech issues, poor lore, poor story, boring repetitive combat, bad level design etc, yet said it was a 7 or 8/10. Only a few days earlier, slams Death Stranding, which had zero tech issues, has innovative mechanics, an interesting story, great visuals = 2/10. Gotta love bias. Mack you're easily my favorite reviewer but I feel like this one was definitely off. I feel like you hurt yourself on this one. You are constantly comparing this game to Jedi Knight, at no point do I hear you review the game on its own merits as its own product, for an audience that hasn't played a lot of the old game. You barely mentioned that it's hard or that the design is like a Souls game, you only mentioned that with the super obvious bonfires and not in relation to the rest of the design. You compare it to Jedi Knight so much you called it Jedi Knight: Fallen Order, and the fact is that it's not that, it's not a sequel, I don't see why it has to be similar to that game at all. I don't know if you have played The Force Unleashed but there are obviously TONS of force abilities in that game and still doesn't have half of the things you can do in Jedi Knight. You're playing as a padawan here too so I'm not sure you should be so powerful. My point is that the Star Wars games are all so different, you're really doing a disservice to yourself a s a reviewer to compare them and name the best Star Wars game. There has beenultiple RTS games, I could say this game doesn't have the energy and gritiness as Republic Commando, a 1st person shooter, and then Knights of the Old Republic 2 has about 37 force powers but you don't see my complaining that I can't force heal or use life drain in this game and saying it's not Canon or not the force. I just think when you look at the gaming history of Star Wars, this new one stands out as a great lightsaber combat focused Jedi game that stands out from the rest as a unique experience due to the Soulsborne level design and combat... But I feel like you weren't willing to see that at all because you just wanted the same game from decades ago when no one or nothing ever said that this game would be even remotely similar to Jedi Knight, just like Force Unleashed was, it is its own game, its own thing, and I think I prefer it that way.

What Mack doesn't mention though is the thing critics often slag games for, this game avoids - ie pretty much everything is up to you - swinging and grabbing vines is down to timing, there's none of this auto lock on / auto grab nonsense. Any ledge or edge can be fallen off, no invisible walls stopping you. So while there are elements of modern Tomb Raider here, its definitely not as hand holdy as those games are.

+Matt Yeah! I think he's been very harsh here! He first said it was silly being a powerful Jedi too quickly which is a negative, then later on he states that you are not overpowered which is another negative thing. But they both contradict each other. The story is of a padawan who needed to re-remember his force powers, so he will learn the basics quickly, but won't be better than he was before Order 66. Currently playing it and it's what I expected and wanted it to be from when I first saw it. I'm enjoying it very much!

It helped you a bit but it allowed you to explore everything on your own, and each of the 5 planets are all wildly different so you are getting a new experience every planet you go to. Best £0.65p I have ever spent. I spent 55 playtime hours and finished the game on Jedi Grand Master with 98% completion and I have to say this game is incredible. I cannot wait for the sequel. On Jedi Grand Master difficulty, you truly feel like a Padawan who just became a Jedi. This is the whole point of the game. The sequel of course will open up more force powers. For a studio like Respawn to make such a good Star Wars game, they deserve massive kudos. Of course the game has some flaws but a pretty damn impressive first attempt in my opinion.

The first thing I thought was this is just Tomb Raider with a Star Wars theme, with all the climbing, wall running and never ending fall slides. And the combat is so basic and bland, no combos and such... These days you basically play PC for fps and not for graphics. Sure these console ports look better on PC, but it's so marginal compared to how it used to be if we're being dead honestly with ourselves. Whereas PC Ultra used to blow everything away, these days it's more like a 20% overall increase in visual fidelity if that. You have hardware 4 times as powerful and 5 times as expensive that puts out a result not even close to looking even one third better than a console on Ultra while tanking performance. That's not the fault of the hardware, that's the fault of the entire development process of modern video game focusing so heavily on console above all else. Doesn't matter how expensive your rifle is if you can only load it with shitty low grain, hand-pressed rounds.

@Billy Magada Was going to say the same thing. Both of the early times he brings up lore he's wrong. First, Cal doesn't learn the force really quickly, he already knows it as he's an apprentice. He just has to recover the memories of how because he's hidden them for 5 years. Second, he says you don't get to use lightning and choke. Jedi don't use those powers. He says they don't they give a fuck about lore. Neither does Mack.

@@lwaves Well it depends. Kyle Katarn, Jaden Korr, Mara Jade all used Force Lightning and Force Choke in the games they are featured in. There is also the Kotor games. Even Luke shot lightning use it in the old canon and i think Plo Kloon using a variant of Force Lightning is still canon. The point is having the ability to utilize both Light and Darkside abilties are a staple in other StarWars games. Gameplay wise it offered a lot more tools for the player to utilize giving varied approaches to a situation. And as the drunk british man said, it can get boring just pushing and pulling in a 20 hour game.

AFAIK, those games aren't part of canon (even ignoring Disney's wipe) therefore it isn't part of lore. When did Luke use lightning? If it didn't happen in the movies or official TV shows it doesn't count and I don't recall it happening in the movies. He deflected some of the Emperor's bolts but nothing more. I can't speak for the EU stuff as I never really got into it but Plo Koon is a Jedi Master, very different to Cal, and even you say he used a 'variant', which doesn't make it seem like the same thing. As I say though, I don't know on that bit and it's still only one or maybe two Jedi out of how many? Even if both Plo Koon and Luke used lightning, you also have to take into account that Cal is still a padawan, a five years out of practice padawan. To give him higher end powers like lightning and mind powers would be ridiculous at this point. It would go against the very lore that's being called into question. If they add it later on, assuming sequels happen, then it could be a different case but right now, it's right not to have those powers.

Best game I've played this year. Visuals are great, combat is fun and the story is brilliant. Like tomb raider/uncharted meets Star Wars. No monetization. Plenty of puzzles and replayability. Lastly the reason you don't feel super powerful is explained in the story if you pay attention. Cal was a young Padawan when order 66 was executed. He didn't finish his training and didn't train for years because he was in hiding. The reason you also don't have all the powers in the films is because the Jedi and Sith don't know all abilities. His ability to do force echoes is an ability few have access to, this is also explained in the story. He isn't a fully trained Jedi. Did you even watch the cut scenes? From your video it doesn't sound like it.

Its a shame you're not a huge fan of this one. I tend to agree with 99%of your reviews but this one I have to push back a bit. I think youre doing the game a disservice by only playing on the medium difficulty. Obviously the game is derivative and pulls a lot from Dark Souls. Ive been playing on Grandmaster difficulty (hardest) and it feels like the way the developers intended it for. The game is difficult and its meant to be that way. I will agree the lack of force powers is disappointing but it does have a narrative reason... cal is only a padawan and just rediscovering his force abilities. Hopefully they make a second game or try a different franchise for next gen and expand on the abilities but I would LOVE to use Jedi mind trick and see stormtroopers kill each other. Oh well, we all have different opinions for a reason 🤷‍♂️ good review as always still, keep up the good work!

I disagree that the consoles are the reason. Force Unleashed was primarily for consoles and that game’s Force powers are godlike. They are to Force abilities what Jedi Outcast/Academy were to lightsabers. I think it mainly came down to the game designers prioritizing other elements over the Force abilities or core combat, alongside the fact that Cal is supposed to be a newbie Jedi so not to the same power as Kyle Katarn in Jedi Outcast (who has years of Jedi experience under his belt) or Galen Marek in Force Unleashed (who was raised since childhood to be a living Sith weapon).

Good review. I really love this game but agree with your point about some of the slides and jumps. I agree that you don’t feel uber powerful but i think that works well in this context. this is a padwan who fled when he was about 10 and has been in hiding ever since it would be wrong if he was a walking god. Kona Kr33d fuck me no wonder you aren’t buying any games anymore when you only listen to this guy who over exaggerates faults in everything and plays up his rants because he knows that’s what the subs want and that’s what gets him views. I would be pissed if I had saw only this before buying the game and not gotten it because it’s the most fun I’ve had with a Star Wars game in years.

You can't blame lack of abilities on console. Elite Dangerous has full functionality on console, so this game can do more than three powers 🤷‍♂️
