I'm from London and grew up with the palitoy star wars toys. The cardboard death star was my favourite toy ever. It was actually shaped like the death star and had so much play value. Darth vs obi wan on one level and han Luke and Leia next level up. Thanks for the video's and helping me relive my childhood.

UK did eventually get Kenner branded toys, (figures at least) cos I remember saying to my mates, "Who the fuck are Kenner?" Could have been overstock, or a factory balls-up I suppose but I do remember. Honest!

1) I'll say Palitoy wins that one. The Kenner one is nice, but the Palitoy one seems more... Death Star-ish. Palitoy just repainted their Action Force playset for it, but it works. 2) Any storage is good on a toy, and I would've wanted to see the engine under the 'hood' (we call it a bonnet). Kenner wins. 3) Never cared for sounds, but some kids did. Prefer the chrome R2, but I have to give it to Kenner again (same with the Tie Fighter). 4) Hmm... something of tie on that one. Leading toward the Palitoy for the extra sticker. 5) Kenner wins that one - crane and extra level is cooler. 6) Kenner wins easily.

Great video! I live in England and bought Star Wars toys obsessively right from the start! I remember hearing about legendary toys that were only available over there. My friends used to talk about the escape pod but I didn't believe them. And wow, I never knew about the engine hatch on the speeder! That looks so cool. The Palitoy Death Star blew me away. I had so much fin with it. Me and my brother got one each for Christmas 1978. Here is a photo my mum and dad took before they went to bed on Christmas Eve. Looking at it gives me tingles and brings back warm memories. imgur.com/fZ7zxgG

We had both Death Stars in Canada. I had the cardboard one and loved it. My friends that had Death Star playsets mostly had the Kenner style one. Also, here in Canada, the vinyl caped Jawas were everywhere. All of my friends had them. I had the cloth tunic version and my friends and I thought I had the “special rare one”. I only found out recently that the vinyl caped ones were the more desirable and rare ones. Funny.

Just found your channel by accident. I like your style, man. You're funny! Also pretty damn nostalgic for child of the '80s like me. I remember there being some Kenner toys in my collection. I definitely had the Kenner Biker Scout action figure. He's right up there with the Emperor's Royal Guard as being the coolest-looking figure in the whole set. OK! I'm gonna go watch your video on how much the toys cost when released. Thanks for this, dude.

I laughed at that remembering the ashtrays from the 80s. That is very true ash trays were everywhere back then, seems like everybody had more than a couple ashtrays in their house. And making ashtrays in class at school was not uncommon either. What a memory you reminded us all of growing up in the 80s.

Another major difference was how we got mail away figures. Unlike Kenner cards, Palitoy ones did not carry a proof of purchase stamp. If we wanted a mail away figure, we had to cut out the character name from the front of the card, which ruined it. I still have a load of old Star Wars backing cards, some with holes where I cut the names out to send for a figure. Very possibly Boba Fett. Good video, Junkman!

Part of the reason for the cost reduced Palitoy versions was the amount of disposable income available to UK householders in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Palitoy figured that reducing the number of working parts would make it more affordable to the Mum’s and Dad’s buying their kids toys back then. Funnily enough they didn’t make any alterations to the Millennium Falcon but stuck with the same basic version of the X-Wing throughout the entire run.

When I got the X-Wing for Xmas I was pretty darn mad when I discovered it did not have light and sound! I thought they ditched that later on. For the 2nd wave of toys or something. But now I've learned from your vid that they just wanted to save money from day one. As a kid I'd spell out every letter of the 12 back. And it darn well did say "light and sound". For years I wanted that X-wing. And when I finally got it... disappointment. What a load of baloney! Luckily, now-a-days European and US releases don't differ. But it puzzled me for years why my X-Wing didn't have the light and sound. P.S. I was disappointed too that R2-D2 didn't fit in the X-wing. His head sticks out, but it's just a big button that you have push to unfold the wings. Ha ha.

That Junkman the palitoy death star had a large sticker on the bottom showing the star wars action figures.the image was the same as the 12 back cards where the camadian version was plain black. The kenner Canada death star had the words "trash compactor" printed in English and French above the garbage shoot.This toy was made by kenner Canada not just imported. Also did you know there is a 3rd card board death star ? It was made by toltoy. The american kids missed out on the best star wars toy.

GREAT VIDEO JUNKMAN!!!!! The Death Star (Kenner version) was always My absolute favorite Star Wars playset of them all!!!! I remember getting it for Christmas back in the late 70's after I had seen it in the 'Sears Christmas Wishbook" (remember those?!!) It lasted for years and years (actually so long that the individual peices of foam used in the trash compactor dried up and crumbled away). When My son was little I went online and bought him an actual still in the box Death Star Playset. We had a ton of fun putiing the stickers on and setting up the playset for many battles (He still has his packed away in the original box!). I always thought the Palitoy one would be cool to have also, it was really detailed and it reminded me of the "Space 1999 Alpha Moonbase Playset" made by Amsco that I had as a child. It was made of cardboard too but it was really nice for what it was. Thank You again for sharing this video and information with Us, it brought back so many GREAT memories for Me!!!!! : )

Is size matter? the answer is yes as the UK market is 10 time smaller the US one. This is the main reason why Palitoy had to figure out how to manufacture a toy who fit to the British market (otherwise you Pay $50 for toy and that's a perfect exemple to mention here) Palitoy worked on Kenner's blue print only and made it's own mould. As you probably know, iron injection mold are the most expencive process in the industry and you better have a lot to cast before using it! Palitoy Droid Factory, Land of the Jaws and Creatures cantina base are made of thermoform plastic sheets which it a very low budget technic. this technology was even use to make Stromtroopers's suite in the Star Wars films and it's still use today in many industry when you have a very small amount of item to build. If you want you can have a look to my Kenner Palitoy review right here: Land of the Jawas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXe0eaSNg9ppaLM Creature Cantina: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIXTfaONh6d8qc0 Take Care Junkman !

probably should point out that there was a lower standard of living in the UK and Ireland , and if some of the bigger toys had been priced like the US , no one would have been able to afford them ! Also the other cool thing was that a lot of Star Wars figures later got remixed and remade into the Action Force range (a sort of miltary/sci fi range )that eventually got folded into the GI Joe range in the UK
@tperson8347
@tperson8347 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don't think the UK missed out on too much. Their X-wing was far better due to the nonexistant electronics and the engines were black on the inside. The Kenner Death Star was superior, but Palitoy had more features, thus, more to explore. The main issue I have with the Palitoy Death Star was the color scheme. Green?? Orange?? I'll stick with DARK blue, off white .. and orange .. IT'S RUST! :) Someday, I'd like to get a few Palitoy (and Lily Ledy, for that matter) SW toys to round out my collection. Thanks for the video :)

Pretty informative. I knew there were some differences, but never knew just what they were. Didn't matter, my folks couldn't afford most of the toys when I was a kid. I had a few vehicles that my mom found at thrift shops and garage sales. Being poor sucked being a Star Wars kid.

I was a kid in the UK and although most of the figures were Tri-Logo / Palitoy, many of the available vehicles etc were Kenner or Palitoy. Many warehouses / stores obviously imported Kenner stock from the US. (My Land Speeder was Kenner, I never even saw the Palitoy version over here - definitely inferior, haha).

Don't quite get this as I had no problem getting kenner or palitoy versions of most especially the figures,the palitoy Han Solo was far better than kenners as his head was massive,didn't even know that one was a UK and the other was usa brand. I remember the clone wars toys coming out for the cartoon and my son was into them the quality was fantastic when first released with everything possible posable,move forward just a couple of years and dumbed down to 1970's style but still £10 a pop and as far as I know Savagge Oppress in his full outfit with light sabre was never released in the uk.

this is a modern day collectors problem. back in the late 70's to early 80's, no one knew what was going on overseas. as there was no internet and we was just happy for anything Star Wars to appear in the shops. I had the Palitoy Deathstar and played with it for hours. the reason that it is the best version is ... you had loads of different areas for setting up your figures. as it had every main scene of the Deathstar on it. where as the U.S version just had open areas.

Mexico got the same Kenner stuff as in the US, if any, they got less stuff. The distributors only changed the packaging, sometimes (if not most of the times), they simpy put stickers over English text and logos. If Mexico got the playset in which the scapepod was, it is very likely that it was in the playset.

Your story about your amigo whose mom used the escape pod as an ashtray reminds me of something that happened to me back in the 90's. My mom (God rest her soul) was a smoker back then. I was heavy into building Star Trek models. I was also heavy into Coke (-a-Cola, you judgmental, self-righteous ....aaaahhh....never mind....) Anyhoo, we were watching Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (well, my mom was watching it, for me, it was background noise). I was working on a K't'inga class battlecruiser, and had gone through a few cans of Coke. (Rrraaaapapapapapapapappapapapa.....the Great Cornholioooooooo....!!!) ... Ahem! .....moving on.... At one point, I blindly reached over to grab a can of Coke I had *thought* I was currently drinking. Shows what I get for not looking....as, when I tried to drink, I suddenly got a mouthful of backwash and cigarette ash! Cough....sput....gag....sput...sput....cough.....GAG!!!!!! My mom was laughing her head off, and pretty soon, so was I... largely because I wish there had been a camera set up at that moment, because I could see in my mind's eye how the whole thing would have to had looked. It wasn't a prank she had planned or anything. There were just several empty cans of Coke on the table I used to build my models, and she had used one as an ashtray (perhaps a day or two earlier.... great housekeeping on my part, eh?). Ya' hadda be there. LOL!

If you were constructing a Death Star playset, perhaps out of popsicle sticks, what rooms would you include? I thought Kenner could have sold sections independently. I want an accurate design. Something large. It must have a corridor with a chasm. It must have another corridor with doors that lead to the trash compactor. You need a spot to park the Falcon.

I liked our death star. It was a tower with an elevator that could take your figures up to 3 levels. I played with that playset a lot when I was a kid and still have it, not as complete as it originally was, but I still have the box as well. Good times being a kid in the 70s and 80s.

Wasnt the action lever on the Palitoy cantina set on top of the playset instead of it being built in like the Kenner version? I kinda like the seating area built into the stairs on the Palitoy version.

I had (and still have) both battle stations, and they're both equally awesome. Using them TOGETHER in tangent expanded all the possibilities of recreating scenes simultaneously (aka acting out the WHOLE movie) without having to "recycle" the same level to do so, which often meant removing an entire batch of figures to accommodate the "players" for another "scene". For example, in the Kenner "Tower" set, the first floor had to double as the location where Vader & Tarkin made Leia witness the destruction of Alderaan, as well as the control room where the heroes (in Trooper disguise) left the droids to wait while they rescued the Princess from her cell... which was NOT in the Kenner tower set... but WAS in the Palitoy "dome" set. Palitoy also offered a specific control room where Vader and Tarkin hung out, leaving the first level of the tower set free to leave the droids. It's a tossup as to which the better trash compacter is... the "chute" style and general accessibility win goes to Palitoy, but the orange "tank" of the tower set offered foam "trash" and a Dianoga monster. The painted imagery on the Palitoy set was something that would hinder the literal-minded child unable to ignore the "presence" of Stormtrooper guards and Imperial officers in the main control room. Fortunately this was not that big of an issue for me, lol. It bugged me, but my imagination (like the Light Side of the Force) was stronger, hahaha. My recommendation : if you can, GET BOTH. :-D In fact, I went nuts one year and bought about 5 more of the tower sets. You place those things side by side, either in a "fan" formation (where all the elevator towers meet), or in an alternating arrangement (where it alternates between elevator tower and trash compactor), it's an impressive layout. The illustrated inserts do make it rather dark inside, though, so, if one were ambitious enough, one could install small LED or fluorescent lights to brighten the place up a bit, lol. One major flaw of the "fan" formation, is the tractor beam control centres becomes a lot less "dangerous" for ole Obi-Wan, as the catwalks meet or overlap (depending how close together you wanna place the sets).

Instead, Junkman tells us that these are different, but both are vintage Star Wars, beloved by kids and made with lots of care and heart, and therefore both are good! Great work, Junkman! :)
