Well, in SW:Legends this ship was actually designed and built as an armed heavy freighter and got turned into a military carrier by supporters of the rebellion. But since Disney is in charge, everything seems to be designed for the imperial Navy except the MonCals

@@adamantu To be fair, even in Legends almost every larger ship the Rebellion had until the capture of Coruscant and the fall of the Empire was either a modified civilian vessel or a captured Imperial vessel. About the only exceptions were salvaged Clone Wars era Warships (mostly survivors from the Separatist Fleet or old cruisers such as Dreadnoughts) which were modified and updated to suit Rebel tactics and crews.

I first saw this thing in the big orange "essential guide to vehicles" my brother got in 2003. 17 years later, watching Rebels with my 3 year old and I suddenly yell "hey that's the Flurry! " much to my wife's confusion.

@@michaelramon2411 Exactly that is confusing. For all of Star Wars history, Legends or Canon it is stated that the Nebulon-B-Frigates were an imperial Design but we never see them used by the Empire. And the Rebels have many of them which indicates that the Empire used many of them.

Someone correct me but Quasar-fire is legends variant of this ship that was used only by rebels while Quasar-class light carrier is imperial designation for same ship in cannon.

Fun fact, this is based off the Quasar Fire carriers in Legends, where they were actually *Rebel* ships with no Imperial usage at all. The Imperial's answer to the need of a light carrier came in the form of the Escort Carrier, a bulbous ship with a single massive hangar bay running through the hull.

Ok thank you, I thought I was crazy. I remember the Empire not wanting them because they could not operate independently and the ISD was basically 90% of the Imp fleet, the Rebels were like "fuck it, we will load it up with snub fighters and go to town."

@@manius1222 the Quasar Fire class was most certainly in the old EU, first featured in the 1993 novel "The Truce at Bakura", it was a bulk cruiser designed to carry cargo containers between the "cargo bays" (hanger) and bridge section, the Flurry was refitted to carry up-to 50 fighters, due to this being the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Endor (literally starting the next morning with Luke seeking medical attention because he was not feeling good after being electrocuted by the Emporer) an Imperial colony was under attack from extragalactic invaders, due to damage and losses suffered in the previous days battle, all the alliance could spare was 20 X-Wings including the surviving members of Rogue Squadron, 3 A-Wings, and 4 B-Wings abord the Flurry, 5 Corellian gunships and one corvette. It has definitely been part of Disney Canon since Rebels

The Quasar Fire Class is easily one of the best ships in Star Wars. If the Galactic Empire were real, this thing would have been built in the ten-thousands. It's small enough and cheap enough to build a lot of them, and to be almost disposable. It's also large enough, and well enough equipped to handle a ton of low intensity missions on it's own, but is still enough that bringing just a few into a large fleet would really help in a straight up fight. It's sort of like the US Navy's Escort Carriers or WWII, except with more ability to fight in the actual battle fleet. Something between a Casablanca Class (like USS Gambier Bay) and an Independence Class. Something like the Japanese Hiyo and Junyo, if you know the Imperial Japanese in WWII. While Japan may only have built a few light carriers and smaller carriers, ships like USS Independence and USS Gambier Bay made up a huge part of the US Navy's carrier force during WWII, with somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 hulls completed in the CVE/CVL range just during the war. The CVLs were smaller, cheaper carriers that had the speed to operate with the actual fighting forces. They were used to augment the more powerful fleet carriers of the Yorktown and Essex classes. The CVEs were smaller still, usually built on the hulls of converted cargo ships (quite a lot of CVLs were converted warship hulls - many being built from the hull of Cleveland Class light cruisers). The CVEs were a lot slower than the CVLs, and since they were built out of merchant hulls, much less able to stand up to battle damage, but also able to mount a lot fewer defensive weapons. Most CVEs carried a single heavy AA gun, and a smattering of light/medium weapons. CVLs tended to be a bit better defended. CVEs did things like provide air support for Marines and Army troops fighting for control of islands. They provided a lot of anti-submarine patrols, and they could provide fighter cover for parts of the fleet that were less combat capable than the high power ships of the battle fleet like the fleet carriers, fast battleships, and cruisers. They did a lot of things like escorting troop convoys, protecting cargo shipments, and guarding places were supplies were unloaded. The Quasar Fire Class would be really, really, good at those sorts of jobs that the CVE or CVL were so great at during WWII, but with a little more ability in real battles than either. Great, great ship.

I love this ship so much, was fascinated by it as a kid reading that old "Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels" book. I actually really like the refit they did for Rebels, bringing this lovely ship into canon and updating the design a fair bit, separating the giant flight deck into four hangars, and making it look a bit more fitting for the Imperial Navy.

I love how Star Wars Rebels establishes the trend of everytime the rebellion needs something, from fuel to weapons to shields to even whole ships, they literally just hijack it off the Empire, plus the fact that the empire is literally almost everywhere becomes a disadvantage for them as that just gives the rebels more places to steal from. It's like they need supplies and instead of going shopping they head on over and hit up the nearest Imperial Garisson.

It's a really interesting design and I love the profile, but it does make me question why the hangar section is not significantly longer (or, conversely, why the top section is not significantly shorter to keep strictly to the light role), even if only the central two bays were stretched it could surely easily fit double the number of fighters aboard. Of course the 'real' answer is likely rule of cool, but it would be interesting to have some lore for justifying the design.

I remember in your last video on this ship that hull fractures caused by coming out of hyperspace were implemented as a form of sabotage by the Sullustians. Is that now just legends? Great ship, and great video BTW.

The hull fractures are still part of its lore, implied to be “shoddy construction” by mid & outer rim shipwrights. Definitely not sabotage. >;) After multiple hyperspace jumps it would need to be docked & maintained or risk an catastrophic accident..

My head canon is that this Quasar Fire is the Escort Carrier version of Quasar Fire cargo vessel in legends, replacing its cargo bays with flight decks, like some WWII escort carrier that were based on the hull of cargo ship for ease of construction. These ship were only meant to deploy its air wing in support of low-intensity combat operation and were not supposed to engage in real combat, let alone any fleet action, thus allowing the ship to be build with much lower standard than a full size warship (again, like some WWII escort carrier). The hull fracture is the result of these ship having to operate far from port for long period of time, way longer than intended by her original spaceframe, plus lower construction standard.

A Quasar-Class with a pair of Arquitens-Class Cruisers could have been used to control a system or even several systems for a fraction of the cost of an ISD plus it would have been a better match for the rebels star-fighter focused fleets. Good thing for the good guys that palpatine was a fervent believer in the stupidest military doctrine in history. Just imagine how many of these carriers could have been built and outfitted with Tie Defenders if the Death Star wasn't built, or even if the empire just cut back its ISD program by 20% (or just kept using the effective victory and venator class combo of the late clone wars, just imagine the savings!)

Yeah it's weird, it has a tiny air wing and it's got this big triangular armor plate just sitting over everything. Very odd design, wouldn't it make more sense to wrap that armor all the way around the hangers kinda like the Atlas Carrier from BGD? Then you could provide more cover for the hangers and make them bigger, allowing you to carry more aircraft; that'd be a much more effective use of space. Of course then you'd probably have to redesign the whole ship from scratch. I don't hate it mind you, just seems somewhat inefficient to me.

Unlike our real life carriers this ships have to carry all fighters internally..and not just that.. they still need space in their hangars for other stuff.. fighters cant go into sardine mode and in the case of the Quasar it can launch nearly ALL its wing at the same time..not just 4 at a time with long periods in between.. it can also recover at least 4 fighters simultaneously.. a Ford can probably only carry less than 40 fighters in her hangar deck.. in sardine mode and wings folded..wich means launching them will take a LOT of time to get them out to the flight deck. unfold, rearm , refuel and launch only max 4 at a time.. the Quasar has ALL fighters in their stations ready to launch at any time from the hangar..

This may seem a bit weird, but I have a funny idea. I have an Imperial squadron, approaching a Rebel-inhabited planet. They have a large allied cruiser that's headed towards hyperspace. But before they can take their leave, I'll have my Interdictor-class rip it from hyperspace, and have my two Quasar Fire-classes launch a swarm of fighter squadrons, ripping the vessel's external systems to shreds, allowing a substantially safer boarding than if I didn't apply this tactic. Impractical, yes. But I'll be damned if it wasn't a good psychological warfare tactic.

Great video! This is one of my favorite Star Wars ships. The Empire would have been smarter to make more of these and less Star Destroyers. Two of these can carry more TIE fighters than a Star Destroyer at less than 3% the cost.

It might just be me being weird, but the short landing bays kinda bug me. Full-lenght bays would allow for transporting more supplies, spacecraft, and allow for larger engines to get in and out of an area more quickly.

Probably just whinny people who don’t like the “canon” aspect of it.. it’s the same ship, slightly different backstory & people would rather be upset then just happy to have their ship in universe again.. Nearly all Legends ships would rejoin canon once a spot is made for them. & Poor Spacedock crew making informational vids just doing they’re thing talking about ships they like in whatever universe they come from.

Neat ship, promotions seem a bit wonky though. The engine blocks right next to the hanger with something like 2/3 of the ship more or less wasted etc

It was so awesome seeing a Star Wars Rebellion ship made Canon. That game never got the respect it deserved previoulsy, but I still think, to this day, it is the most comprehensive collection of EU characters, ships and planets in anything Star Wars. One of the best Star Wars games ever.

I loved the specialized aspect of this ship but hate the shaping, like what is the point of half or more of the tonnage being an irrelevant wedge, id want just the hanger section and put the engines on one side and the crew/bridge at the other and make those the front/back so the hangers are on the side. This just seems shaped the way it is cause it had to be imperial.

I'm honestly surprised how rare a dedicated carrier is in Star Wars, what with it's surprisingly heavy usage of fighter craft. Both sides can absolutely benefit from a ship whose sole duty is to be a moving hangar for swarms of fighters and bombers, so seeing Battlestar style ships be more common is....odd.

I like this thing, but do think the bay layout could be arranged in a more sensible manner. Having ONLY forward facing bays is a pet peeve of mine. Seems like it adds the unnecessary complication of making it difficult to launch fighters/shuttles while the ship is under thrust. Would perhaps be better with a "T" shaped arrangement with port/starboard/fore launch bays connected to a central hub. If you re-arranged the engines on the aft you could even add an aft bay.

I suspect it was built with simplicity and expensive foremost in mind. Probably better to think of this as a mobile spacestation than a conventional warship. You park it in orbit of less important planets with a couple Gozanti cruisers to maintain an Imperial presence.

@@jrggrop Well, what I described would certainly be more complex, especially splitting engines to provide a gap for an aft bay... but simply changing the layout to have two port facing and two starboard facing bays wouldn't be any more complicated or expensive to build than four forward facing bays, I don't think.

EC henry could do a reverse Nebulon-B and make a stripped-down version of the Quasar, removing most of the delta wing and retaining only the bridge, spine, hangar and engines.
